Rams, WRs, and History
I was just thinking today about our receiving corps and how it lacks a true big #1 wide receiver. Then I thought about Pat Shurmer's history with the Eagles and how they've never really had a big #1 receiver and have been very successful with the smaller receivers, just like what we have. After the jump is every Eagle that had at least 15 receptions in a season and their height and weight.

So as you can see, the Eagles never really had a big #1 receiver that they used, other than TO. They had the occasional big guy but they were never really big contributors. Todd Pinkston has comparable size to Laurent Robinson, and all the other one's are about the size of Brandon Gibson or Brooks Foster. So I'm not sure we'll ever get that #1 WR. I think it would help greatly, but if we are in fact running the Eagles offense we may not feel we need one, of course we are running a lot more than the Eagles did. A TE could be an addition we make since the Eagles utilize TEs a lot, hopefully we already have that in Onubon. We'll have to see if our offense starts to resemble the Eagles more now that we have Sam Bradford and a strong O-line. Our passing patterns are similar so maybe we can just become as successful as them.

Both teams had RBs lead the team in receiving, 3 receivers after that were about proportionate although the Eagles were all better, then came TE, WR, TE, WR who all had very similar stats. We also had similar rushing attempts in those years, although 50 rushing attempts were from Donovan McNabb. I think we are definitely headed in the right direction and have a built a WR corps very similar in stature to that of the last decade of Eagles teams who have been very successful. A TE and backup RB could be the only missing pieces next year, and maybe only backup RB.

Good Post
Although I still think the Rams are in need of a legit #1 receiver threat. Pinkston, Curtis, Brown were all solid WR’s in their own right, and the mobility threat of McNabb allowed them to have more open space in the field to get YAC.
There is also the comparison between McNabb and Bradford. Although I think Bradford does have the potential to be a top 10 QB in this league at some point. That will not be this year, or maybe even next year. By 2007 McNabb had already established himself as an elite QB.
By the time Bradford develops into that elite-type QB, I truly do think the Rams will have made an investment into a #1 WR threat, and the Rams will probably have to have found their new RB option as Jackson will have probably already been beaten out of the eltie status he is currently at.
Good Post...
I thought about this before too, but put in nowhere near this type of research – kudos. IMO, I think that they may pass on a true #1 due to the history – but I don’t think it is the right decision though. With the exception of the TO year (the year they made the SB – surprise!), McNabb was alway counted on to do too much.
The knocks on the Iggles O (for what seems like forever now) was always that they had no power running game and that they had no true #1 to go to when they needed to….unless its 4th and 26 and you have Freddie Mitchell:). Everything always fell on McNabb. I should hope that the model is being tweaked to compensate for those shortcomings. Good thing is, already a leg up on the power running with SJax.
Baseball season is back - Go Halos!
Every time I see DeSean Jackson's name I cringe.
Why oh why is he not a Ram?
because he was a pot smoking trouble maker coming out of college at a time where we were trying to establish the four pillars. If he sucked and got suspended for off the field issues it would be “why oh why is this guy a Ram”
Turns out we whiffed on that (assuming he would have been good with US in the first place..). Happens to every team in the league and I can fill a website with the number of players we COULD have had.
We have Avery and I don’t regret the past. Moving on!
I don't think you can assume Jackson would have been much better with the Rams
maybe a little, but maybe not, because he would’ve had to deal with instability at QB and a lack of pass protection to allow him time to get open.

I remember where I was that fateful 2nd round pick...
I was at the Seattle Motocross…I had the draft on (I was in a luxury box…pretty f’in nice if you ask me) and when DeSean Jackson’s name was called, I was jumping up and down…my girlfriend thought I was spazzin out. Anyway, I saw the RAMS SELECTION on the ticker, and they picked Donnie Avery. She laughed her ass off at me.
Long story short, I should be GM.
That is all.
The House of Spears reigns supreme
nice!
Long story short, I should be GM.
I love that because every guy on here can relate that having that feeling. Right on, ram_rod.
Actually, neither Ike nor Holt were prototypical #1's either
… at least not size-wise.
Remember though, the Eagles only went to the SuperBowl when they had a true #1.
Not saying we can’t be good with who we have, but I think a true #1 is pretty close to mandatory.
I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.
oh you really tripin ha ha ha if you dont think Holt and Bruce were # 1 WRs
but yes your right we need at least one true top notch #1 WR
The year that they took on TO they went to the Super Bowl and Mcnabb had the best year of his pro career.
So yes, it does make a difference. How did you miss that? Our WR’s minus Gilyard are garbage. Did you watch the video’s of when Bulger did have time to throw? That’s right they were blanketed and that was with 8 in the box all game long. Mcnabb’s legs and ability to throw on the run were the only reasons he had any success and wasn’t carted off of the field on a stretcher. It doesn’t matter if our O-Line MAY be good, can they hold off the rush for 6 seconds while our crappy receivers get open? Nope.
My memory might be bad
But didn’t McNabb get injured a few times during his career?
Also, wasn’t T.O. injured for all the playoffs (and some regular season games) the year they went to the superbowl?
The House of Spears reigns supreme
If I’m not mistaken, he missed two regular season games but, played in the playoffs and Super Bowl. Not sure but I know he gave Mcnabb his best season and then I know for sure he played in the Super Bowl against doctors orders and had a big game.
He only played in the Superbowl
but still, there is no doubt he helped, that’s for sure. But to say that they went to the Superbowl BECAUSE of T.O. is false, they had to get through the playoffs without him.
The House of Spears reigns supreme
Saying they would have been there without him would be false also. When you put a threat like him on the field it changes everything from coverages to how much you can blitz.
He helped them get to the playoffs
But he wasn’t on the field. He didn’t do anything during the playoffs to help them get to the superbowl.
He had a great season and helped them reached the playoffs, but the regular season means jack when the playoffs start.

Avery & Gilyard Could Be Very Nasty Very Soon

I'm thinking the same thing, expecially if
Avery is ready and LRob is healthy, they will take attention away from the rook Gilyard. The more I read on Gilyard, the more I realize how dangerous he will be if the other team takes him lightly or is too busy covering other guys. He’s also show the consistant ability to make big plays when they are needed most….gotta love that!
How is Avery not a deep threat? This guy could have easily had 3-4 more touchdowns if the damn ball wasn’t underthrown all the time due to a combination of QB arm strength and QB pressure. Not to mention he spent half of the season fighting leg injuries qhich removed his deep threat potential. Losing Laurent hurt us very badly last year and people take that out on our receiving corp from last year. The only healthy guys we had left were Amendola and Gibson (who spent about half the with a different team on top of having to learn our plays).
Not bad Carneros!
I will give you a B. Again best season by the Eagles/Mcnabb in the last 10 years, when TO was there. More recently, he has had a bunch of guys at or near 1,000, every year. It’s a passing league and last years guys can’t perform job one (get open). I can only hope Gilyard is great!
