TST Community Mock Draft: Reviewing the top ten
The second annual TST Community Mock Draft has wrapped up the first ten picks, and with that, let's take a look back and discuss.
Here are the picks.
- St. Louis Rams - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
- Detroit Lions - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
- Washington Redskins* - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
- Cleveland Browns - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
- Seattle Seahawks - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
- Kansas City Chiefs* - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
- Oakland Raiders - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
- Buffalo Bills - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
- Jacksonville Jaguars - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
Reactions below the jump.
The surprise of the draft had to be Jimmy Clausen going to the Rams. Conventional wisdom is a strange thing, but the consensus out there now is that the Rams will make Sam Bradford the first overall pick of the draft. However, GM Billy Devaney has been insistent that they have not made up their minds on the first pick, and Jimmy Clausen is still within the realm of possibilities.
That's a lot of players from Oklahoma's two big schools on the top ten, and it could/should shake out that way on April 22.
I liked the Cleveland/Kansas City swap. With Bradford still on the board, the Browns had to make sure they got to him because Seattle could very well have made him their pick. It made sense for the Chiefs because they still get a shot at a player who fills a major need and represents excellent value at his draft position.
Mount Cody got all the attention (being a key part of the national champs will do that...not to mention weighing 370), but Dan Williams is a dominant NT. That's become a premium position in recent years, and a top ten pick is highly possible. It made sense for the Bills who had no QB to select with that pick too.
There's a big question mark out there whether or not Dez Bryant is still worth a top ten pick. People put too much emphasis on the personality stuff, though Bryant does have a few red flags. I still think he has the talent.
We'll get through the next set of picks today, at least through lucky 13.

I know its hard to get a trade agreement solidified...
but I still stand by my “trading down to draft Jimmy” comment that I mentioned after the first pick, saving yourself millions and grabbing a few extra picks. KC trading down was a great move, taking full advantage of Bradford still being on the board. STL trading to down to SEA’s 6th or CLE’s 7th would had been exactly what I was talking about. Although, hindsight…
I agree ... and maybe that's why I got so much grief for the pick ...
… but this is a mock so I didn’t continue to try to trade down (the Seattle offer was laughable).
My pick was influenced a bit by the general consensus that the Rams need to draft a top QB. I agree that is a need, but there are so many other needs I think we are best served trading down or picking best available that is also a need.
So, to throw a bone to the fans, and to not mess up the mock too much, I picked a QB. To ease my conscience, I DIDN’T pick Bradford.
As far as picking Clausen first, that was for the sake of speed. In fantasy football, you draft with value in mind usually, BUT … if the guy you REALLY want isn’t likely to be there next time you pick, then you have to reach to get him.
So … going under the assumption that I could not trade down but was going to pick a QB, I ‘reached’ to pick what I thought is the best QB in the draft because I couldn’t do it in the 2nd round.
If I truly am the GM of the Rams, I am trading down with any decent offer. I’m not holding out for ‘fair value’ because my team will suffer. That first pick is ONLY truly worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If either QB is available where we trade down to, then I strongly consider taking them there.
As an aside, we may get our QB by drafting Suh if Detroit then grabs McCoy because Tampa will then have to trade to get either. Don’t dismiss the idea of us drafting Suh first overall but him never suiting up in a Rams uniform.
Yes, I actually wore a watermelon on my head during the Rams SuperBowl victory in 2000.
Tampa has discussed trading down.
If the QBs are still there at their pick, they probably would get some serious offers to trade down from Cleveland and Buffalo. I really don’t think Tampa would trade up to get Suh, particularly if they could trade down and gain more early picks.
Love the Bradford pick
and Dez Bryant to the Jags was awesome. Was kinda hoping Taylor Mays to the Seahawks but maybe Carroll won’t be able to persuade the front office. Raiders going with Gerald McCoy when Jacoby Ford is still on the board?!? Great Picks guys.
at least
