Rams can Diggs it

It's been quiet on the free agency front for a while, but the St. Louis Rams completed another transaction, agreeing to terms with LB Na'il Diggs. The Rams and Diggs had been in talks for a couple of weeks, at least.

Diggs give the Rams a capable run defender to play on the outside, weakside specifically, and continues the theme of their approach to free agency: finding quality veteran depth. He's certainly an upgrade over Paris Lenon, but he is no lock to for the starting WLB job next September. I still think the Rams will look for a WLB prospect in the draft; they should.

Another reliable guy in a position of need

Another good depth signing who will hopefully mentor a newby. Solid signing IMO.

However, he’s played mainly strongside for the last few years and at 32 does he still have the speed to play weakside? Irrespective I think he is definately an upgrade over Lennon, but I can’t see him being the seaon long starter and hope that this does not prevent the FO looking to add one of the top OLB’s in the draft (Weatherspoon, Washington, Bowman, Watson, etc.).

6 for 6 on this thread

Excellent roster move.

I agree with blog moderator that OLB is a need. I am unsure though which position – weak side or strong side?

I think both are a huge need. This is why picks 2-4 are soooooo important.
Rams need a starting DE @#2 and a starting OLB @#3 (question is which OLB position). Maybe @ #2, a hybrid OLB/DE, I dunno yet as when draft day comes, other players may be available that we don’t envision at this point.

I still don’t like a qb this year. I still however would agree to Okung on offense as being the #1 overall! Really though, it is a battle for fans between qb and DT!

I hope this is a backup.

I think he’s a decent player, but he had 2 DNP’s and a single decent/good game.
2 or 3 tackles a game isn’t what you’re looking for in your starter, so I think Van is right and they’re still looking at getting an infussion of talent at OLB.

I love this move

He has been a solid contributor in this league for a while. The guy has the veratility to play multiple spots at LB. He is a smart, hard working veteran. I love the fact that he is reunited with coach Flajole. Should be an easier transition for him, especially since his Def coordinator will know how to use him.

Coach, try not to pay too much attention to his stats. They had young blood taking his time, which ultimately made him dispensable. Thank you Carolina.

Oh I am happy with Diggs, and with his role if

a talented rookie can come in and play behind him for a while or, if they pick an OLB very highly, Diggs is a very good situational/3rd OLB.

Maybe the Rams have a bigger need here, so maybe he’s more valuable to them than the Panthers, but there’s a reason why this athlete didn’t play much and was expendable. I see a real good opportunity to upgrade in this particular draft and definitely wouldn’t pass it up because they have Diggs.

Word!

I couldn’t have said it any better coach. OLB is still a major need for us. I don’t consider Vorbora or Diggs our solution to either position. I think a young guy to pair with JL is very important to compliment the versatile veteran and the versatile Vorbora. It was apparent that Carolina wanted to make the move to go younger a year earlier, but Diggs proved to still be a contributor. With the Rams we don’t need to move him out to make room, considering we do not have anyone there yet.

This guy's in decline and NOT what JL needs to help him back there.

I wish we’d quit signing all these older dudes and save the $$$ for a real impact player. We were supposed to be getting younger. I’d rather have kept Pisa.

What real impact player do you have in mind?

There aren’t any on the FA market. Also, these guys aren’t exactly breaking the bank.

Let me get this straight.

Some people don’t like the signing because he is getting older, blah blah. Diggs is a quality stater for years. No he is not some pro bowler. But would rather have the Rams kept Lennon. I would rather have had Will Wetherspoon back but signed somewhere else. Or would rather have Vobora or Chamberlain starting in his place. I’m pretty sure with all the draft picks OLB will be drafted people. One of the main reasons this team went 1-15 was because they lacked quality depth let alone starters. Even though the Rams didn’t spend crazy cash on the very few Unrestricted free agents doesn’t mean they didn’t improve the team. Fraley, Robbins, even Freely, and now Diggs are huge upgrades for depth and starters.

"Fraley, Robbins, even Feeley, and now Diggs are huge upgrades for depth and starters."

We are 180 degrees out on this one. Replacing no-talent guys like Vobora and Lenon, flops like Boller, and whackos like Incognito with has-beens doesn’t help us at all.
