Rams rookie uniform numbers
The St. Louis Rams have expanded the roster. Here's the new draftees' numbers and the positions (when listed) they're listed at as rookie minicamp starts today.
Sam Bradford, #8, QB
Roger Saffold, #76, RT - Interesting that they have Saffold listed as RT at this point. There's still some question about whether or not he'll be there or at RG. Could the team expect him to push Alex Barron this year? He gets Pace's old number too.
Jerome Murphy, #26, LCB
Mardy Gilyard, #81, WR - Another new guy with big shoes to fill in terms of his jersey number.
Michael Hoomanawanui, #86, TE
Hall Davis, #90 - Hopefully that works out better than the last player to wear #90, Adam Carriker.
Fendi Onobun, #48, TE
Eugene Sims, #92, RDE
Marquis Johnson, #33, RCB
George Selvie, #67, LDE
Josh Hull, #56, SLB

Ok, maybe I'm just a dweeb...
but I LOVE stuff like this.
a) Surprised Bradford didn’t take Burton’s #14, but #8 works for me.
b) Really, really odd to see #76 and #81 on anyone else. Granted, Torry wore #88 for a few years, too, but #76 = Orlando Pace. Always will.
c) Fitting that Hoomanawanui is wearing Manumaleuna’s old number.
d) #67 is truly terrible for someone listed as DE. That’s a guard number.
jbw
Haha just noticed that
67 is such a scrubby number for a DE

This regime really cares nothing about our recent history
First they cut Holt and Pace, two potential hall of famers, which I understood, and then give the numbers out right away, which I don’t understand.
Onubon > Gates
who gives a flying fart about a number. A number won’t play ball for us, the players wearing them will. Pace even said he’s fine with Saffold wearing 76. Don’t piss on the regime so quickly man.
Sorry
If I think its appropriate to show a little respect for two of the best players on the best team this franchise has ever had. I’m not pissing on the regime, they do their jobs fine, they just don’t care about are history. Name one thing they’ve done to show they care about our history. Its not a big deal as long as they do their jobs well. Just saying.
Onubon > Gates
???
“Name one thing they’ve done to show they care about our history.”
What do you expect ?
Billy D and Spags singing Kumbaya with photographs of Big O and Torry in their hands ?!?
No
But they didn’t have to take down all pictures of them and get rid of any memories of them in the locker room.
Onubon > Gates
Team first
… nobody is more important than the team.
Nobody was a bigger fan of Faulk and Warner than me, but I agreed with taking the pics down.
I can take a beating ... I'm a Rams fan.
So they can't be a team
If there’s a picture of Marshall Faulk or Torry Holt in the locker room? I could understand taking down the one’s that are still players but Faulk is retired so how does that hurt?
Onubon > Gates
Relax dude
OK look. I don’t know about them taking down photos of Marshall Faulk and Torry Holt in the locker room. But I do know that Spags was up there late one night taking down the pictures in the locker room because football is a TEAM sport, not about being a star. He put the Rams logo up in place of the individual pictures to emphasize that they are RAMS not Marc Bulger, Steven Jackson, etc.
The other thing is that the Greatest Show On Turf is over. Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt, Orlando Pace, Kurt Warner, etc. – they’re gone. This is a new team. And having pictures of past players up just emphasizes the idea that “I (emphasis on I) am gonna be the next …”. It also reminds the team how great the past was, and what they have to live up to.
Everybody just take a deep breath. These players have all said that it’s OK having someone else wear their number. And the rookie’s are excited – Saffold’s even said how proud he is to wear 76, cause his dad and his hero ORLANDO PACE wore that number. For the Rams. Lets give these guys, Devaney, and Spags a chance and stop complaining. In other words SHUT UP!
I'm not really that worked up about it
But what is so bad about “I am gonna be the next…” and having to live up to the great past. Seems like some good motivation to me. I’m really just stating the facts.
Onubon > Gates
As long
as Torry and Pace are cool with it should be no problem, I agree that those numbers should probably be left alone but Spags and CO are trying to create a new regime here, leave no number untouched!!
If Torry and Orlando said it's fine...
…then I guess it’s fine with me. But I kinda have an issue with it. You could make a case for either as the Greatest Ram ever, and they’re both Canton-bound. Just another show of class on their part.
If I were a rookie, I would want no part of those numbers as a Ram.

My personal opinion is that the rookies shouldn't take those numbers
But on the other side of things i admire the balls of those kids to step up and take em. That is unless they were oblivious to who held those numbers before them.

I actually quite like the quote from Gilyard
“Why set the bar low?” Gilyard said. “Have me reach out for something I need to get. It keeps you hungry, keeps you wanting to be better, and be better and be better and be better and be more better and be more better, and eventually be the best.”
At least he is aware of what we all hope for him.

marshall faulk or eric dickerson are the greatest rams ever.
in all honesty, pace and holt aren’t even in the conversation.

I beg to differ.
Faulk and Dickerson have 4 Pro-Bowls each as Rams, and Faulk has a Superbowl win.
Holt and Pace were both drafted by the Rams, selected to the Pro-Bowl 7 times each, won a Superbowl as Rams, and played the beginning and their entire prime as Rams.
I’m not saying Pro-Bowls measure everything perfectly, but when each have 3 more than both Faulk and Dickerson, and they were each Rams throughout their earliest and brightest moments, AND Dickerson doesn’t have a Ring, I think they’re most definitely in the conversation.
I’d probably go with Faulk, but to dismiss Orlando and Torry quite simply because they weren’t as flashy would be a grave mistake. They each dominated their position for almost a decade and had Superbowl glory with the Rams. They’re definitely in the conversation kiddo.

Exactly
Just because OTs don’t score TDs doesn’t mean they can’t be considered as one of the best in history.
Onubon > Gates
True that.
And not to give props to a Seahawk, but their fanbase pretty much agrees that Walter Jones is the best player they’ve ever had. Holmgren called him the greatest offensive player he’s ever coached. Dude was special and so was Big O when he was setting those devastating blocks for Marshall/Steven, or stifling pash rushers to allow Kurt or Marc to let loose.
Those were special times. Torry on the end of so many of those lasers. We were the greatest offensive football team ever. Period. As far as pure firepower and skill at pretty much every position, we were untouchable for the first half of the decade.

Youngblood = greatest Ram ever, but Pace might see Canton
which is why I would just have been happy if they didn’t give out Pace’s number.
Jack played not only int he playoffs with a broken leg, but dude showed up and played in the damn useless Pro Bowl with it. Now that is a football player.

Agree on Youngblood.
What about the Deacon or Merlin Olsen though?

Them too!
I don’t even know how to seperate them. I always thought Merlin was my prototypical Ram, that they should try to be like him…Jack was so damn tough it aint even funny, and a complete stud player.
As good as the modern players have been, just my personal opinion the older guys are a cut above. I only think Warner and Faulk compare, and they only compare in different ways. I think Pace has a shot at Canton, I have no quesiton whatsoever that Warner and Faulk are in.

and Deacon was a savage animal
I’m hoping our new Defense will mature into eventually coming to play like Deacon did, like the old Raiders did, like the old-old Vikings did….players they other team is scared of, that’s what I’m hoping they can build. HOF D’s are obviously rare, but I’m seeing the character they are trying to build and I love it

I think it just comes down to logistics
You have some 60 or 70 people that you have to assign numbers to, at least at the beginning of camp. If you blocked the numbers of every substantial ram, you’re not going to have enough numbers to go around.
In the future, I think you’re going to see a lot fewer retired numbers, no matter how great a career you’ve had. Either that, or they start letting people take numbers in the hundreds.
Agreed
Already, you see this in other sports. In Baseball, teams like the Yankees and Cardinals have so many numbers retired, it’s not unusual to see players in the 60’s and 70’s, at least in spring training, and baseball doesn’t have near the number of roster spots that football does.
Team Pictures
I thought I would just comment on the fact that Spags took the pictures of individual players down, yes. And out up some of the team, working as an offense and defense to promote a team theme.
Saffold called Pace about the number
Heard Roger say on NFL channel that he called Pace before getting the number, and when he didn’t pick up he left a very detailed message about it. OK, I feel better now. Not that it matters how I feel, but it’s nice to know Saffold understands the significance of what he’s putting on his back. I was left with the impression he feels like he has something to live up to, and good for him.
