I thought for sure Cleveland was going Clausen...
But I guess they remember the last time they picked a Notre Dame QB that fell a long way, and didn’t want to make the same mistake again.

that's non
Joe Montana was ND too. Neither has anything to do with each other.

If we can't have Arrelious Benn
I want Alterraun Verner… top 3 name for 2010 nfl draft. And we might need a DB.
I hope
Damian Williams or Rob G. is there in the 3rd
TE
Definitely offense. You look at what the Rams have done with their lower picks. Darell Scott. Bradley Fletcher. David Vobora. All low picks. They aren’t pro bowlers, but they are decent. This coaching staff seems to like to find defense later on.
The House of Spears reigns supreme
TE next
Then let Spags have a few late picks to produce depth to back up our FA depth signings.
It sure makes sense to have let Carriker go for a kings ransom with our strategy
This is hilarious.

TONS of players are falling
Strange draft this year. We’re going to have options in rd 3
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.
Trooouuuuup
Bills just got a great player. He’s gonna be a beast
He'll be good
but not for us.. We need a #1, or at this point a project #1
The only reason everybody loved him in college was because...
he was roomates with Mr. Camel Colt McCoy, and their parents played together.
Seriously:

Why was there a Rams fan cheering for New England?
They showed that one guy standing up and cheering, next to him was a Rams fan in his seat cheering, and it wasn’t a sarcastic cheer.

So you are really going to sit here and say that....
If you have the best offensive line in the game, you are going to win? Really? Name 1 starter on the Saints offensive line without looking it up. You can’t. But they won. Why? Because the had PLAYMAKERS. They had Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, a slew of GOOD WR’S and playmakers on defense. They won because they made BIG PLAYS, not because of their offensive line. Get a clue and stop drinking the kool-aid….

OL are like plumbers....
you know the analogy…
Baseball season is back - Go Halos!
thats
the most crap statement i’ve ever read on this blog. everybody knows you cant win without an offensive line. look at the rams: 6 wins in 3 years because the line cant stay healthy or out of the neutral zone. just because you don’t know the names of the linemen doesn’t mean they’re not dominate. why dont we have a category for o-line in fantasy football? because nobody knows them. not because they’re not good but because they don’t accumulate stats besides pankcakes.
We don't need playmakers...We have Offensive Lineman!

I would have rather seen a OT later in the draft, just not at that spot.
I mean we got barren for another year right?
Barron for another year?
You mean 300 yards backwards for another year? Yeah!
"And on the first day of Spring, number one has fallen."
Yea im not a fan of Barron at all, he pisses me off
I hope the can swing a trade for him and pick up an extra pick, then ill be more on board with that pick.
I can understand
but at this point I can’t do much so I just look forward to Jackson running behind both him and Smith on both sides. Hopefully Bradford standing in the pocket given time to read the defense and put the ball right to our recievers.

Offensive lineman are just as, if not more important than playmakers.
There’s no argument that the o-line isn’t the most important part of an offense.

The conventional wisdom was that teams would be knowcking down the Rams door to get one of the QBs still available – as the 2nd rd continues and those QBs keep sliding…..
Still, I am curious to know what the "alleged" offfers were….is it possible Devaney couldn’t even get anyone to offer a 2nd rd swap + a 3rd?

We need some guys to step up for sure, I have a feeling they are just going to draft every pick to help out Bradford
Next pick should be defense.
If not, that would be ridiculous.

Aaron Hernandez or Jimmy Graham. I think Damian Williams will be the pick

We've gotta get a defensive player.
Offense can wait until round 4 or 5, where Danario Alexander, a better receiver than Tate, will be available.

but we need a go-to guy. maybe bradford can make a #1 out of the corps that we have, but as of now, i dont know if tate is the guy. Think of the fun we have have with his first name though..

Al Davis head of the Browns, now?
Also, Seattle, you know Colt McCoy is very hatable…
"And on the first day of Spring, number one has fallen."
Yeah why not just bolster one of the stronger points on our team. I think we should go Ol for the rest of the draft. Bradford doesn’t need a WR who can get any kind of seperation or a TE. Bruce Campbell was at one point supposed to be a top ten pick, what happened and why didn’t we take him at 33? He is taller, faster, has longer arms and better feet. Meh what do I know, maybe we will pick him up in round three. Barron would have gotten us through the next year just fine and a lot of dominant OLB/DE were still on the board. Not happy! You want to improve the defense in one fel swoop, pick up a good pass rushing DE.
Agree on the need but theres no fell swoop
Mario Williams is a good player and good example, I dont think anyone in thier range of 33 was going to be any more swoopage than C Long did for them. Rookie DE’s usually take a couple years

Guys like Derrick Thomas, Reggie White, Javon Kearse (for a while) LT who was effectively a DE and Julius Peppers can disrupt an entire offense and also have to be game planned around. That is fell swoop! A corner can take away one WR, a linebacker can make tackles and big hits but a DE or Pass Rushing OLB that gets into the opposing coach’s and QB’s heads can make everyone on the defense better. Poor and rushed throws, tackles in the backfield, sacks, more int’s and so on. DL can do it to but, it’s much more rare like SUH!

Tate is hatable. He went to Notre Dame, so that gets him just into the A range.
A-
"And on the first day of Spring, number one has fallen."
I'm late so I'll give my thoughts on Saffold now.
He was a guy I loved. I really really wanted him. The only problem is that I wanted him in the 3rd round. I did not think he would go this high. Love the player, not too happy with the spot. We could have traded down maybe 10 spots and still got him. But I’m not dissapointed with the pick because it is important to protect Bradford and this is an upgrade at RT over Barron, and as far as I know he doesn’t have any character issues (not caring or trying hard enough on the field) or false start issues. Hopefully we can get at least a 4th for Barron and can turn that into a good TE, OLB or DE, depending on who we take two picks from now.
other teams were gonna draft him
which is what everyone was reporting
by heinzketchup on Apr 23, 2010 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Really?
I haven’t been able to follow at all today. Were there internet reports or were they saying that on TV? Like I said, I’m not upset at all. I love this guy. My problem is a rely too much on Walter Football for round projections. They said 2-3 and that kind of stuck in my brain and I kind of made it fact.
It was stated that the
He wouldn’t have gotten past the Bucs at #35
I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but I'm not sure we'll see that much improvement next year.
The Lions have had a couple good drafts, but they’ve only seen slight improvement. Pretty soon, when more pieces are in place, they’ll be a lot better. I think the same thing will happen with the Rams. Anywhere from 3-6 wins next year, maybe get a little better the year after, and then you get the surge.
Iron Sam lives again!
Not pessimistic...realistic.
But I don’t see 6 unless things were to go very very right. I would say the expectation should be 3-5.
Baseball season is back - Go Halos!
So whose it gonna be?
I think it’s between Griffen, Bowman, or a WR. Ima stick with my guy and say D Williams
we have been talking about griffen in the 2nd round for a long time
to get him in the 3rd, HUGE
Sam Bradford
Okay, we need some defense here. Please.
I want to reach for Alexander in round 4 to get a great weapon for Bradford after this next defensive pick.

I’ll guess Griffen

We seem to find 10 guys we want
and pick them at least 10 picks too early to make sure we get them. Not a bad strategy, I guess, but we could look at the guys that fall.
thats what I thought
I can’t believe this. the first two picks okay that makes sense but WTH there’s much more out there. damn I’m frustrated and I coach young girls soccer and have alot of control but this is off the chart. I hope this works for us.
"SJAX" - The extra strength cleaner that fights off that Stubborn, Stingy Defense
I just wish he didn't have that injury.
I think we are set at CB for the next few years now though. Bartell, Fletcher, Murphy (I’m assuming he’ll be a solid contributor since we thought enough of him to pick him this early), and Dockery. Pair them with OJ and Butler and our secondary is set. Now we need a front 7, our biggest weakness probably. Muckelroy or Bowman to round 4 please.
Wow
Another physical corner. Strong play off the line, solid tackler, I’m not high on his recovery skills, but a similar corner to BradleyFletcherBradley. I saw about 8 games of his, and while I liked him, I didn’t think he’d go 3rd round, and I definitely didn’t think he was on our radar…

I couldn't see, the Lions logo was blocking the name.
All I caught was some guy named Murphy who is a CB, and he seems okay. Everson would be so much better, than a cornerback, though. I’ll just have to trust the Rams on this one.

I just really dont get it though.

I guess we're still sticking strong with the pillars.
Griffen’s not a 110% effort 100% of the time guy, so I guess we didn’t want him. And his drop seems to solidify the decision on not taking him anyway.
read a souting report said he is one of the hardest hitting if not the hardest hitting corner in the draft and very good in run support, also said he could move to safety.

I don't want him to move to safety, we're okay there.
I don’t care about how hard he hits, I want him to support the run and not get burned on the pass. If he can cover passes, he’ll be okay in my back, but I’ve never liked these hard-hitting guys.
He is Iron Sam!
He has a strong mind,
He can read the defense well.
He can throw real hard,
When he passes the Rams score!
the only reason I would want him to move to safety
is if something go wrong with Atogwe/contract problems or if we just trade him.

Insight on Jerome Murphy? Please? I have no idea who this is.

Crap! I didn't see the above post.
Hmm…I’ll take your word for it. Surprising with Griffen there.
I guess I’ll never get an ’SC Trojan on this team that I like. (Cross Fingers Joe McKnight).

or anyone else’s for that matter.

Teams are making it a point in this draft
If you aren’t worth the pick, they wont take you or reach
Sam Bradford
Here you go
TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT CORNERBACKS: Jerome Murphy, South Florida, 6-0, 196, 3: Despite his lanky appearance, Murphy is one of the biggest hitters in this year’s cornerback class. He is especially willing and impressive in run support. Last season, he had a career-high 77 tackles along with a team-leading four interceptions and seven pass breakups. He had 67 tackles and a pair of pickoffs in 2008. Although he might fit the need for the bigger cornerbacks that NFL teams seek, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Murphy moved to safety, where his abilities to hit and cover will be an asset against the league’s pass-happy offenses. – Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY
some more
Read & React: When playing off-man coverage, reads plays in front of him effectively. Fast enough to play the run from the outer flanks.
Man Coverage: Tall, wiry corner who can press and play off his man. Hips are a bit tight in transition, but he has the speed to turn and run with any receiver down the sideline. Has a short memory. Inconsistent getting his hands on the receiver in press but is willing to be physical. Loses his footing when planting to drive on out-routes. Overaggressive and will bite on pump fakes and double moves. Late getting his head around on deep balls.
Zone Coverage: Technique needs work when playing off the line. Backpedal is high and slow. Gets too deep in his drop, allowing short throws in front of him. A step slow getting to the ball thrown in his zone but will lay a receiver out on plays directly in front of him.
Closing/Recovery: Very good burst to track the ball in the air. Closes fast and hard on receivers. Makes the big hit and wraps up when necessary. Usually recovers well enough to make the tackle after losing his man in zone coverage. Has the speed and length to effectively blitz off the edge.
Run Support: Extremely willing as a run defender on the outside. After recognizing run, he attacks receivers instead of running around them, and is able to fight free from blocks to make tackles. Often forces plays inside to linebackers. Always gets at least as piece of a back running to his side of the field. Struggles to disengage from solid blocks on the edge.
Tackling: Physical run stopper who really likes to hit. Good focus on the ball around the line of scrimmage, and wraps up backs trying to make plays with second effort. Usually wraps or cuts in the open field effectively, although he will miss tackles when lunging and diving with his head down. Not strong enough to stop receivers with an arm tackle, but is quick enough to at least get into their knees to bring them down.
Intangibles: No major character issues. Team player willing to play cornerback or safety. Played with a broken left hand during his redshirt freshman season. His size and speed are prototypical for special teams (returns and coverage) and he averaged more than 24 yards per kickoff return in 2007.
NFL Comparison: Al Harris, Green Bay Packers
I think Cornerback. We're fine at safety with James Butler and Oshiomogho Atogwe.
When they (as in Butler) aren’t committing safeties, they are good.

I love him
I just said it in a different post actually at about the same time. I hope he’s there and that we can teach him to be at least an average blocker.
this draft is a farce
I can’t stand this

No, but we know (read: think we know) what the needs are
And not addressing them is frustrating. I don’t know why, I’ve been a fan for more than 26 years and should be used to them by now, or so you’d think.
Anyway, just where are the playmakers we were promised?
what makes you angry?
at least we didnt draft tebow

You want to see how to draft, make your team better and stay good? All you have to do is watch the Patriots trade pics and draft well. They do this almost every year. You would think the rest of the NFL would learn something. We obviously don’t pay attention at all. Trade pics? Nah we will draft the 2nd or third best tackle with the 33rd pick. Maybe I am missing something but, that was a reach.
you are
all the reporters were saying Saffold was not dropping past 35

we need someone really explosive on the offensive end
however, i don’t think we’ll be able to get one anymore.
Keith Null won't accept my friend requests.
Danario Alexander is waiting.
I’m telling you, this guy is an f’ing stud, and the fact that people aren’t taking a risk on him because of injury is ridiculous. If Denver is taking a first round risk with Timothy Tebow, somebody would take a “risk” with the best receiver in college football from last season. He is an absolute monster, a game changer, and he’s proven that he come back from injury. The Rams could use a guy like DA.

QB- Sam Bradford RB-Steven Jackson FB- Mike Karney OL-Smith,Bell,Brown,Staffold,Barron WR-Avery,Gibson,Amendola,Robinson,Burton TE-TBA
DL-Long,Robbins,Ryan,TBA LB-Lauranitis, Vobora, TBA CB-Bartell,Fletcher,Murphy FS/SS-Otogwe,Butler
I like the team we are building
Just a couple more pieces like Osi, a LB, and a TE and we are in business
Sam Bradford
You do realize we were 1-15 with all but two of those players right? On top of that we will be adding into the mix a Rookie QB.
we just need
a lot less injuries and maybe the team will get used to playing together
by heinzketchup on Apr 23, 2010 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
All but two?
Bradford, Staffold, Barron moving to the right side, Robinson for a full year, Robbins, Murphy are all new.
Thats not including the continued progress of Smith, Our whole WR corps, Long, Ryan, Lauranitis, Fletcher and healthy safties.
Theres a lot to look forward to. Having a legitimate QB, behind what I consider when healthy a very good OL, with Jackson as our RB, I look for a very intriguing year
Sam Bradford
I hate to be annoying, but it's "Saffold", not "Staffold."
Anyway, I’m looking at that and thinking it all looks good. Also, is Na’il Diggs going to be a starter next year?

just got him 3 hours ago, my bad
Sam Bradford
But we're picking at #99 next
Are we going to find a starting TE, at least one upgrade (preferably 2) at OLB, and a starting pass rushing DE in the coming rounds. Let us not forget that we haven’t signed Atogwe yet so may need help there too.
If we give up our 4th for Osi, we can look forward to a top 3 pick again next year. We still can’t score any points; who the hell are Feeley/Bradford going to throw to and who takes over if SJax can’t make every single play?
Saffold I could have lived with, but Murphy looks like an odd one considering what else was there.
Sorry for the pessimism, I’ll support the team whatever, but the FO need these players to prove them right and almost everyone else wrong, but heres hoping.
A full free agency and lots of money to spend
And another draft. That’s most likely 5-7+ key players there. Add that to our foundation and we will be a 6 win team at worst. And I trust this regime’s drafting ability and by that time our developmental picks from 2009 will start to become solid players. I think Scott and Fletcher will be solid. Everyone else after that I didn’t really like from that draft. Foster is nothing but a question mark at this point. We’ll see what he’s got this year. If we can avoid injuries we will be good. Not to mention I’m anticipating one of the top WRs in the first round next year which could make a huge impact on our offense.
Ok I have you down for 6 wins at least. We are in the weakest division in football so I guess it’s possible. Not everyone that we draft will be a starter as you well know. If we don’t address our WR problem this year and get some pass rush, I am giving us 3 wins at best. We were 1-15 and from what I have seen we have yet again gained 1-2 starters, adding more back ups. We will have to see the 4th-7th rounds but, I haven’t been real impressed. Bruce Campbell, Tate and all of the other WR’s DE’s and LB’s are still there and we draft Saffold. Don’t like it.
I'm not sure if you understood that I meant 6+ for 2011
Although I wouldn’t be completely shocked if we won 6 in 2010. Just a slightly above average surprised.
I love it when people are named "Wright" like the guy the Bears just drafted.
That way, when he does something wrong, you get to change his last name to “wrong”.

But we could have Julio Jones, AJ Green, Michael Floyd, or Jonathin Baldwin instead.
I have no idea but I’m guessing Broyles won’t be a high pick so we could get both.
I can't believe this...
…we had our choice of Brandon LaFell, Damian Williams, Aaron Hernandez, Ed Dickson, Everson Griffen and Navorro Bowman and we take a CORNER? I don’t care if it’s Jerome Murphy. I hope he becomes a stud but we could have gone another direction here. Makes me wonder if we’re thinking about trading back into the third.
there goes Damian Williams and Brandon LaFell…..damn!
good run support, hard hitting, good angles
that’s something we can use. We knew it was a position of need, consider the CB taken after us. We pulled the trigger at the right time. Still a lot of big names on the board for us: Muckelroy would be a good choice to push and take over for Vobora. Vobora makes a great back-up. There are still many good TE’s, LB’s, DE’s. I think we’re doing really good.
How about Hernandez in this next pick?
I still want Griffen or Bowman, but intriguing
Sam Bradford
Im relieved they didnt take Griffen
Non effort, cant stand those guys that dont go hard every play
The blind stares of a million pairs of eyes, lookin hard but won't realize, that they'll never see the C. And when I'm rollin by, you can't see me!
So, a CB in Jerome Murphy
Wow, DE & OLB is going to not be filled with an impact player again – year after year after year no immediate impact players. I should have bet at Vegas!
lol, you are so incorrect it's funny.
Look at the whole picture: run support, hard hitting, good in coverage. Most of his neg’s can be coached out of him. He’s a great addition to the team. There are still some really good players that will be available for us. Have some faith.
We appear to be done for today.
Unless we can swing a trade with the Colts or Saints, which seems unlikely.
The Bills owner said the Broncos thought they were coming for Tebow so they paniced and drafted him
…snicker…
Pollian also said they had no intention of drafting Tebow.
