I thought for sure Cleveland was going Clausen...

But I guess they remember the last time they picked a Notre Dame QB that fell a long way, and didn’t want to make the same mistake again.

If we can't have Arrelious Benn

I want Alterraun Verner… top 3 name for 2010 nfl draft. And we might need a DB.

TE

Definitely offense. You look at what the Rams have done with their lower picks. Darell Scott. Bradley Fletcher. David Vobora. All low picks. They aren’t pro bowlers, but they are decent. This coaching staff seems to like to find defense later on.

TE next

Then let Spags have a few late picks to produce depth to back up our FA depth signings.

It sure makes sense to have let Carriker go for a kings ransom with our strategy

TONS of players are falling

Strange draft this year. We’re going to have options in rd 3

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

So you are really going to sit here and say that....

If you have the best offensive line in the game, you are going to win? Really? Name 1 starter on the Saints offensive line without looking it up. You can’t. But they won. Why? Because the had PLAYMAKERS. They had Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, a slew of GOOD WR’S and playmakers on defense. They won because they made BIG PLAYS, not because of their offensive line. Get a clue and stop drinking the kool-aid….

thats

the most crap statement i’ve ever read on this blog. everybody knows you cant win without an offensive line. look at the rams: 6 wins in 3 years because the line cant stay healthy or out of the neutral zone. just because you don’t know the names of the linemen doesn’t mean they’re not dominate. why dont we have a category for o-line in fantasy football? because nobody knows them. not because they’re not good but because they don’t accumulate stats besides pankcakes.

Offensive lineman are just as, if not more important than playmakers.

There’s no argument that the o-line isn’t the most important part of an offense.

by PezzSports on Apr 23, 2010 7:09 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah why not just bolster one of the stronger points on our team. I think we should go Ol for the rest of the draft. Bradford doesn’t need a WR who can get any kind of seperation or a TE. Bruce Campbell was at one point supposed to be a top ten pick, what happened and why didn’t we take him at 33? He is taller, faster, has longer arms and better feet. Meh what do I know, maybe we will pick him up in round three. Barron would have gotten us through the next year just fine and a lot of dominant OLB/DE were still on the board. Not happy! You want to improve the defense in one fel swoop, pick up a good pass rushing DE.

by Everett 11 on Apr 23, 2010 7:13 PM CDT reply actions

Agree on the need but theres no fell swoop

Mario Williams is a good player and good example, I dont think anyone in thier range of 33 was going to be any more swoopage than C Long did for them. Rookie DE’s usually take a couple years

Guys like Derrick Thomas, Reggie White, Javon Kearse (for a while) LT who was effectively a DE and Julius Peppers can disrupt an entire offense and also have to be game planned around. That is fell swoop! A corner can take away one WR, a linebacker can make tackles and big hits but a DE or Pass Rushing OLB that gets into the opposing coach’s and QB’s heads can make everyone on the defense better. Poor and rushed throws, tackles in the backfield, sacks, more int’s and so on. DL can do it to but, it’s much more rare like SUH!

I'm late so I'll give my thoughts on Saffold now.

He was a guy I loved. I really really wanted him. The only problem is that I wanted him in the 3rd round. I did not think he would go this high. Love the player, not too happy with the spot. We could have traded down maybe 10 spots and still got him. But I’m not dissapointed with the pick because it is important to protect Bradford and this is an upgrade at RT over Barron, and as far as I know he doesn’t have any character issues (not caring or trying hard enough on the field) or false start issues. Hopefully we can get at least a 4th for Barron and can turn that into a good TE, OLB or DE, depending on who we take two picks from now.

Really?

I haven’t been able to follow at all today. Were there internet reports or were they saying that on TV? Like I said, I’m not upset at all. I love this guy. My problem is a rely too much on Walter Football for round projections. They said 2-3 and that kind of stuck in my brain and I kind of made it fact.

by Carneros on Apr 23, 2010 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but I'm not sure we'll see that much improvement next year.

The Lions have had a couple good drafts, but they’ve only seen slight improvement. Pretty soon, when more pieces are in place, they’ll be a lot better. I think the same thing will happen with the Rams. Anywhere from 3-6 wins next year, maybe get a little better the year after, and then you get the surge.

Not pessimistic...realistic.

But I don’t see 6 unless things were to go very very right. I would say the expectation should be 3-5.

I think we are set at CB for the next few years now though. Bartell, Fletcher, Murphy (I’m assuming he’ll be a solid contributor since we thought enough of him to pick him this early), and Dockery. Pair them with OJ and Butler and our secondary is set. Now we need a front 7, our biggest weakness probably. Muckelroy or Bowman to round 4 please.

Another physical corner. Strong play off the line, solid tackler, I’m not high on his recovery skills, but a similar corner to BradleyFletcherBradley. I saw about 8 games of his, and while I liked him, I didn’t think he’d go 3rd round, and I definitely didn’t think he was on our radar…

Here you go

TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT CORNERBACKS: Jerome Murphy, South Florida, 6-0, 196, 3: Despite his lanky appearance, Murphy is one of the biggest hitters in this year’s cornerback class. He is especially willing and impressive in run support. Last season, he had a career-high 77 tackles along with a team-leading four interceptions and seven pass breakups. He had 67 tackles and a pair of pickoffs in 2008. Although he might fit the need for the bigger cornerbacks that NFL teams seek, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Murphy moved to safety, where his abilities to hit and cover will be an asset against the league’s pass-happy offenses. – Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY

by CaliRamMan on Apr 23, 2010 7:45 PM CDT reply actions

some more

Read & React: When playing off-man coverage, reads plays in front of him effectively. Fast enough to play the run from the outer flanks.

Man Coverage: Tall, wiry corner who can press and play off his man. Hips are a bit tight in transition, but he has the speed to turn and run with any receiver down the sideline. Has a short memory. Inconsistent getting his hands on the receiver in press but is willing to be physical. Loses his footing when planting to drive on out-routes. Overaggressive and will bite on pump fakes and double moves. Late getting his head around on deep balls.

Zone Coverage: Technique needs work when playing off the line. Backpedal is high and slow. Gets too deep in his drop, allowing short throws in front of him. A step slow getting to the ball thrown in his zone but will lay a receiver out on plays directly in front of him.

Closing/Recovery: Very good burst to track the ball in the air. Closes fast and hard on receivers. Makes the big hit and wraps up when necessary. Usually recovers well enough to make the tackle after losing his man in zone coverage. Has the speed and length to effectively blitz off the edge.

Run Support: Extremely willing as a run defender on the outside. After recognizing run, he attacks receivers instead of running around them, and is able to fight free from blocks to make tackles. Often forces plays inside to linebackers. Always gets at least as piece of a back running to his side of the field. Struggles to disengage from solid blocks on the edge.

Tackling: Physical run stopper who really likes to hit. Good focus on the ball around the line of scrimmage, and wraps up backs trying to make plays with second effort. Usually wraps or cuts in the open field effectively, although he will miss tackles when lunging and diving with his head down. Not strong enough to stop receivers with an arm tackle, but is quick enough to at least get into their knees to bring them down.

Intangibles: No major character issues. Team player willing to play cornerback or safety. Played with a broken left hand during his redshirt freshman season. His size and speed are prototypical for special teams (returns and coverage) and he averaged more than 24 yards per kickoff return in 2007.

NFL Comparison: Al Harris, Green Bay Packers

You want to see how to draft, make your team better and stay good? All you have to do is watch the Patriots trade pics and draft well. They do this almost every year. You would think the rest of the NFL would learn something. We obviously don’t pay attention at all. Trade pics? Nah we will draft the 2nd or third best tackle with the 33rd pick. He is an absolute monster, a game changer, and he’s proven that he come back from injury. The Rams could use a guy like DA.

But we're picking at #99 next

Are we going to find a starting TE, at least one upgrade (preferably 2) at OLB, and a starting pass rushing DE in the coming rounds. Let us not forget that we haven’t signed Atogwe yet so may need help there too.

If we give up our 4th for Osi, we can look forward to a top 3 pick again next year. We still can’t score any points; who the hell are Feeley/Bradford going to throw to and who takes over if SJax can’t make every single play?

Saffold I could have lived with, but Murphy looks like an odd one considering what else was there.

Sorry for the pessimism, I’ll support the team whatever, but the FO need these players to prove them right and almost everyone else wrong, but heres hoping.

by RamintheUK on Apr 23, 2010 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

A full free agency and lots of money to spend

And another draft. That’s most likely 5-7+ key players there. Add that to our foundation and we will be a 6 win team at worst. And I trust this regime’s drafting ability and by that time our developmental picks from 2009 will start to become solid players. I think Scott and Fletcher will be solid. Everyone else after that I didn’t really like from that draft. Foster is nothing but a question mark at this point. We’ll see what he’s got this year. If we can avoid injuries we will be good. Not to mention I’m anticipating one of the top WRs in the first round next year which could make a huge impact on our offense.

by Carneros on Apr 23, 2010 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok I have you down for 6 wins at least. We are in the weakest division in football so I guess it’s possible. Not everyone that we draft will be a starter as you well know. If we don’t address our WR problem this year and get some pass rush, I am giving us 3 wins at best. We were 1-15 and from what I have seen we have yet again gained 1-2 starters, adding more back ups. We will have to see the 4th-7th rounds but, I haven’t been real impressed. Bruce Campbell, Tate and all of the other WR’s DE’s and LB’s are still there and we draft Saffold. Don’t like it.

by Everett 11 on Apr 23, 2010 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions
