2010 NFL Draft: Who could the Rams pick in the second round?

The first round of the 2010 NFL Draft is winding down. The St. Louis Rams start the day tomorrow with a very valuable piece of real estate on their hands with the first pick of the second round. The first question, of course, is what kind of offers the team can choose from as the day closes. Keeping the pick might not be a bad idea. It looks like there will be some good talent available. Some possibilities:

TE Jermaine Gresham - D'oh!

DE Everson Griffen - The USC pass rusher really put it together his senior year. He could be a fit on the other side of Chris Long.

WR Golden Tate - Considered the second best receiver in the draft, after Bryant. It would give the Rams another player who can do things with the ball.

OLB Sergio Kindle - He can play in a 3-4 or a 4-3. Might also get the Rams some trade interest.

S Taylor Mays - He could give the Rams an upgrade at S, and still come cheaper than OJ Atogwe next season.

Who else could/should be the pick?

Two Bradford?

We’d be unstoppable.
Btw, the Gresham total is now 19 votes for an unavailable player

I'm voting Gresham too. But not till tomorrow morning.

Welp...

Looks like we can still take Jimmy for those of you who don’t like that Bradford pick.

by Boofer on Apr 22, 2010 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

I picked other

Because I feel we should move down. I would love to see a team in the 10-20 range give us their 2nd, 3rd and 4th for that pick

i'm sure

someone would be willing to trade up for clausen in case they think the vikings will take him with the 34th pick.

by douchiedude on Apr 22, 2010 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

How about this

The vikings are after the rams, so that means any team that wants Mccoy/Clausen are going to OVERPAY!

Sam Bradford

by Jombari on Apr 22, 2010 10:14 PM CDT reply actions

I'm pretty sure we're gonna trade down

The vikings, the browns and bills are looking for QB and I wouldn’t be surprise if Weis is lobbying for Clausen in KC.
I really like our position right now. There’s some interesting guy available and we’ll still be able to pick up a good player even if we trade down.

by MathB on Apr 22, 2010 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

Uhhh, Gresham was picked long ago so. Kindle has to be the pick.

by douchiedude on Apr 22, 2010 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the pick...

Will be UCLA DT Brian Price. We get the DT we need and we still have ammo to possibly pick-up Osi.

by victorian on Apr 22, 2010 10:27 PM CDT reply actions

oh yeah

i forgot about the osi situation! since the giants picked pierre-paul, they HAVE to trade osi and the rams would be the best place for him with spags. i’m actually open to picking brian price too if that were to happen but we can probably trade down for that.

the rams absolutely have to dump this pick.

there is a ton of value to be had via trade, and lots of teams will be asking overnight.

Kindle or Griffen with this pick or even a trade is possible.

Trade down (maybe more than once) and still get Navarro Bowman for the WLB. The dude’s a baller… look at his production this year

I'd love to trade down and maybe get some multiple picks

This draft is deep. But everybody says that so I doubt it’ll happen.

My guess

is that they’ll trade down to the highest bidder for Clausen/McCoy or take Golden Tate to give Bradford someone to throw to.

by stlfan on Apr 22, 2010 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

I'm hatin' the Bradford pick, especially with Claussen and McCoy still on the board.

Suh’s going to be the best player in the first round come this fall, but maybe the Rams can redeem themselves and trade down to get more picks. Thats the only way in my mind that going QB with the 1st overall pick will be worth it. Nothing like grabbing an offensive skill player in a draft dominated by stellar defensive candidates at the very top. The rest of the whole league virtually drafted defense in the 1st round.

by Da Rams! on Apr 22, 2010 10:40 PM CDT reply actions

there's a reason

other teams didn’t pick them in the first round…

and i guess the rams should have sued their crystal ball…

by Bralidore on Apr 22, 2010 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

probably the same reason those teams didn't take any QB at all

If you don’t need a QB, you don’t take one in the first round.

don’t tell me about Tebow, that’s rediculous.

i was thinking the same thing

rams could have easily picked suh and got clausen in the second, but looking at it know i like our position. There are teams that are gonna be reaching for the 33rd pick today to grab one of those top players, if we can swap thirds and get a fourth then we can do damage. Hey why shouldnt the rams take A. Benn a big possession wr. to go with a speedy donnie avery

i meant swap seconds and get a third round pick lol

cleveland might

Options

After seeing how the Draft has played out so far, I think that the best strategy, like I stated in my post, that they should DEFINITELY try packaging this for a later 2nd rounder and a 1st rounder next year. Like someone said before, teams will be willing to overpay big time for Clausen, especially at the deal he will have to take for being a 2nd round QB.
The two players I would want most out of this pick is either Kindle which would fit perfectly beside JL, or Golden Tate, who was seen as maybe the best WR prospect by some in the draft. If the Rams somehow could work out a deal and still draft one of these guys, we would already be looking at a very productive draft just in the first 2 rounds, and clearly from our last few drafts, this front office is much better at finding good talent at the later rounds of the draft than the ones before it.

by Cloud324 on Apr 22, 2010 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

yeah a 2011 first rounder would be amazing

by Jombari on Apr 22, 2010 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

How the heck are we gonna do that?

Draft Kindle, AND trade for a later 2nd rounder and a 1st rounder next year? Is that what you mean?

I think its draft Kindle OR trade down. I would prefer to trade down.

by Oski Bear on Apr 22, 2010 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

What I meant was...

Say we trade with KC for their pick which would be the 5th pick in the second round if I am correct. We could trade our pick, demand that we swap 2nd rounders and grab their first for next year seeing as we are handing them a QB that is extremely likely to be their future QB. I know that it is a stretch, but if you play Cleveland and KC against each other, you never know how high one of them may bid for that pick for Clausen, especially with the talk that the Vikings are going QB at 34th. In that scenario, we may have to package something else, i’m not real sure how it would work, but it’s all in a perfect dream. To finish out my thought, I meant that we could still possibly get Tate or Kindle may fall further back down to us, which would give us the player we wanted, and an extra 1st next year.

by Cloud324 on Apr 23, 2010 1:29 AM CDT up reply actions

one of these 4

charles brown, everson griffen, golden tate or sergio kindle. i’d actually also be open to taking damian williams, the guy has all of the tools necessary to be an elite receiver in the league. if he were to fall out of the second and we don’t take tate, we have to grab him in the third. i’d say griffen would be the best choice since he’d be able to start right away opposite of long. i would also be open to taking someone like brian price in the third so we can have a young and potentially good defensive line in the future with griffen, price, ryan and long.

by douchiedude on Apr 22, 2010 11:32 PM CDT reply actions

The rest of the league did a pretty good of clearing the cupboard..

I was hoping either Gresham or Weatherspoon would be available at this slot for us. I think we have enough picks and should start picking up the talent while it’s still there. Even though we probably really don’t need one, we can get a reciever later on in the draft. There are plenty of those still on the board. OLB is a major need and it’s a major surprise that Kindle is still sitting there. TAKE KINDLE!

by NachoD on Apr 22, 2010 11:40 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

I was really hoping that we would be able to grab Weatherspoon, Gresham, or D. Thomas with that 2nd round pick. The one that I was hoping for the most was Weatherspoon, but then again, Kindle fell in our laps, which was a big surprise as well. The best case scenario that I could think of is to trade that pick to someone close to us, get what we can out of them and the still select Kindle when it comes back down to us. But, if we can’t work anything out to guarantee ourselves one of the 5 awesome prospects that fell to us, I say we take the talent while it’s there and get JL some help with Kindle.

by Cloud324 on Apr 23, 2010 1:34 AM CDT up reply actions

just got back

I think it’s really down to DE or WR right now. I know Sergio Kindle is great value here but for me he really is a luxury pick, an awkward/developmental prospect at 4-3 SLB or an undersized DE, when you could get a solid+ DE (in Griffen/others) or a solid+ WR (in Tate/Benn/Lafell). Charles Brown is also great value but again he’s a luxury for me when we have a pretty strong Oline outside of Barron. If I was to pick I’d think Griffen was higher on the board than Tate so Griffen would be it.

4 DA LOVE OF GOD

Please take Tate,he can catch and return kicks/punts.

by RAMIFICATION on Apr 22, 2010 11:56 PM CDT reply actions

F NO. No on Kindle

This is a 3-4 guy converting to a 4-3 defense. No way should the Rams take him. I am not opposed to trading down in the draft. As far as our impact players are concerned I have to think that Curran at WLB and Pitta at TE remain high priorities. After we trade, we pick up someone deep in the 2nd round with a 3rd this year or a late 1st next year.

I really think the Rams could go deep into the 2nd and get Hardy, Curran in 3rd, and if we do not trade for Osi, then grab Pitta.

+1

Everyone loves to criticize the Rams, and they’ve been easy to criticize. Just b/c they’ve made mistakes in the past, under other regimes, doesn’t mean that everything they do going forward is a mistake.

The truth is, no one knows who will be a great QB going forward. Bradford very well may bust. They had him rated as one of the 3 best players on their board, and went with a QB b/c (1) they need one, and (2) QBs are more valuable in the NFL than DTs – this isn’t the en vogue thing to say – but that doesn’t make it any less true.

The Rams are trying to do things right. Last year they got their OT to protect the blind side. This year they got their developmental QB with lots of upside. I’m an optimist as long as there is something to be optimistic about. They’ve been drafting in accordance with the positional value chart.

by Toddius on Apr 23, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

silly...

If the draft is DEEP in defensive players, doesn’t that make more sense to not go defense in a DEEP defensive draft where there will be more defense later, but (according to you) slimmer pickings on offense?

bradford can wait one year

jonathan baldwin, julio jones, a.j. green and michael floyd will all be juniors next year and you can bet that at least 2 of them will go pro. any of them can be elite receivers at the next level, i’d be fine with waiting for a true 1 receiver while filling other needs this draft.

IMO

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

by 3k on Apr 23, 2010 12:58 AM CDT reply actions

That's what I think

Griffen, Price, Dunlap (if we trade down). That gives us the best value and improves our defense right away. It’s someone that can step in and start right away. The most important thing is to add a starter.

I do think it’s necessary to give Bradford the tools to succeed, so if there’s an offensive player they like, I won’t be upset with that, either.

It would be nice to have an explosive, every down DE, though.

Somehow we all knew that....

Everson Griffen, Carlos Dunlap and Corey Wooton would all be there for the second round. Everyone is clamoring for a DT and Brian Price, Terrance Cody and Lamarr Houston are all sitting there too. Depth at DE is a concern and we all know Chris Long needs a running mate to get to the QB. What is more important to you a DE or a DT at this point?

by NachoD on Apr 23, 2010 3:18 AM CDT reply actions

de

or dt rotation is set while we still need someone to play opposite long. if he can trade for osi then i say just draft a linebacker or an offensive lineman. preferably linebacker since the second round still has first round defensive talent.

Griffen is one that kept me up last night...

What to do here, this guy has top 5 potential. Freaky fast and explosive that takes over some games and dissapears in other games. Athletic enough to play RE so that we may leave Long at his position in LE. If anyone can put his mark on Griffen its Spags, No matter who we get, im sure ill be happy, but my god ill have a soft spot for what could have been in Griffen…

next choice

Trading Down would be the best move we could make.
I truly believe a RB is one of our biggest needs. SJ CANNOT carry the load by himself.
If we should keep the pick, then Kindle is the logical choice.

by ZamRam on Apr 23, 2010 8:59 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

I like Tate but...

I’m not sure I want to see another average height WR.

I think we need to trade down, accumulate as many picks out this gold mine of a pick, and see what falls our way. I think since we took Sam the Ram we have to give him as many weapons as a $50 million man can get! I’m not sold on Benn at all, maybe Lafell in the second.

What will probably happen is that teams are going to look at how deep the draft is on D and start plucking offensive players with the mind set that there will be plenty of D to be had later on. We will probably trade down so somebody can come up for Mr. Pickle (Claussen), and I think there is a very real chance that we could trade down again for somebody wanting McCoy. This puts us in maybe the middle of the second where we could still get either a WR (Lafell), TE (Gronkowski), or RB (Gerhardt) while we’ve amassed numerous picks this year and next.
