With the 29th pick in the draft, the New York Jets select Everson Griffen, DE, USC.

After reviewing the Jets roster and offseason moves one of their major needs is a DE for their 3-4 defense. I would have been temped to take Golden Tate here since WR is another need but he was already off the board. The two best available DE's at this point in the draft were Griffen and Jared Odrick. It was a tough decison since I watched Odrick in the Senior Game and he was a good all around player with a non-stop motor. I think that Griffen is the better athlete and has more upside especially in the 3-4. I think he is a better pass rusher and can make an immediate impact in the Jets D. His 4.66 40-yard dash at the combine was impressive for his size and he is coming from a great pro style defensive team in USC. Just look at the LB's from USC in last years draft. I think with Griffen's upside he is a steal at #29 in the draft and just another piece to one of the best D's in the league.

VanRam: Griffen has first round talent, but the Jets really need someone to replace Vernon Gholston. Can Griffen be a 3-4 OLB?
