Umenyiora available for the right price (updated)

Maybe saving those draft picks isn't such a bad idea after all. Another trade rumor making the rounds is that the Giants will make DL Osi Umenyiora available if they draft South Florida DE Jason Pierre-Paul with their first round pick. I don't need to remind you about the connection between St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo and Umenyiora, who thrived in Spags' defense.

This report at Rotoworld says it could be as little as a mid-round pick. Is fourth round "mid" enough? How about a fifth round?

Umenyiora is just 28, and though he's coming off a mediocre season, he picked up 13 sacks in 2007. He missed 2008 with a knee injury.

This draft is going to feature lots of twists and turns with all the trades that could happen.

[Note by VanRam, 04/19/10 5:30 PM EDT ] The Rams were interested in Umenyiora back in February when trade talk first surfaced.

Patton!

Yes, I actually wore a watermelon on my head during the Rams SuperBowl victory in 2000.

Im all for giving a 3rd, 4th Rounder for him.

I was actually wondering driving to school today whether or not the Rams part of the first day was gonna take 10 minutes, or the whole night.

4th Round

at best. Top 5th likely.

by AmpLee on Apr 19, 2010 12:21 PM CDT reply actions

Even a 3rd rounder

Would be a great deal for him. Though a 4th is more likely. He’s a proven player. The Rams need to address this position anyhow, why not do it with a proven player. The Rams could be playoff contenders in 2011-12 with this draft:

Suh
McCoy (next Brees hmm…)
Bowman or other OLB
No pick (trade for Umi)

I also think Carriker should be traded for a 5th to 6th rounder too. Washington would be all over him.

by 81 Witness on Apr 19, 2010 12:29 PM CDT reply actions

Mccoy is not the next Brees, so people should get that out of their head

Sorry, but Drew Brees is the 2nd best QB in this league and just because hes similar in stature to Mccoy, theres not many similarities after that.

not many similarities after that? your post interests me… go on, how else are McCoy and Brees different?

by Rams Homer on Apr 19, 2010 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

You have been rec'd

For providing such fantastic support for your opinion. McCoy is at least an inch taller than Brees, who is officially listed at 6’0". Other similarities include:

Brees was the 1st pick of the 2nd round, coincidentally, that’s where I have McCoy going if the Rams take Suh.
Scouting report similarities:
Both played in a spread offense, which are pointed out as weaknesses.
Both show good touch passes according to scouting reports.
Both are good scramblers.
Mid-range passing games excel.
Both lead their receivers well.
Despite lack of height, both have good pocket vision.
Throw well under pressure.
Both are accurate passers.

Please use facts to avoid humiliation next time. These guys are the same prototype.

by 81 Witness on Apr 19, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

you just stated 2 or 3 similarities in 10 different ways

Not gonna sit here and argue because we are all in this for the right reasons: to win future football games. I just hate how most people (not saying you my friend) just give the comparison to Brees because of physical stature and short accuracy.

by Jombari on Apr 19, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

You say McCoy has good pocket vision.

I’ve read reports that say just the opposite – that he misses guys who are wide open because he can’t see them. He then takes off running or tries to get a pass to a guy who is covered. I think these scouting reports are at least as believable as yours.

Another problem with his height is that he throws 3/4 and not over the top. He gets too many passes blocked. That will only get worse in the NFL.

Yes, he is accurate when he sees a guy open on a short or intermediate route. And he is a good scrambler, but Brees is not by the way. However, he isn’t good on the longer passes, while Brees had no trouble this year hitting guys on 40 and 50 yard TD passes.

Other than height and accuracy on short and intermediate routes, there really isn’t that much similarlity between McCoy and Brees.

by andyrose on Apr 19, 2010 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

He does not force the ball into coverage

His interception ratio is low. Unlike Jake Locker.

by 81 Witness on Apr 19, 2010 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Will this work?

Taking Suh would be good… but, how do you make sure you get Colt at the top of the 2nd? Sure, you can say we jump back in to the lower portion of the 1st round to get him, but at what cost? and which spot do you jump into to make sure nobody else leap frogs you and takes him from us?

And if someone else takes Colt before we can, then what? Tony Pike? Tim Tebow? Would they really be the answer we’re looking for? Surely we can’t go into the regular season thinking Feeley will be our QB for the season.

And if the thought is to wait for Jake Locker next year, how will we know we will get him?

There’s a lot of “What if’s” that could be solved if we just take Bradford #1 and get it over with.

A lot of blind faith among Lord Sam’s followers…

by Le Ram on Apr 19, 2010 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

You didn't answer my question?

If we pass on Bradford #1, I assume we’ll be wanting Colt with our 2nd pick… but… what if he’s not there? How do you know you’ll get a good QB if you pass up on Bradford?

Sadly, the Rams let go of our only backup plan that I know of… of course, I guess they could resign Bulger if they pass on Sam and someone else snags Colt.

by Rams Homer on Apr 19, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I think LeFevour is a good option

i watched about four of his games last year and thought he played well. the only thing i’m not sure of, is his ability to read defenses. before every snap he’ll look back to his sideline and it seems like he’s checking with a coach to run the called play or audible. not sure. but i did like his athleticism. he’s got a strong arm and can really run. he’ll get pick up in the 3rd maybe 4th round.

Getting Locker

Shouldn’t be too difficult to get a top 3 pick if we go into the season with Feeley, Null and Reilly at QB.

Of course, if Locker doesn’t come out again then we would potentially be stuck in the same position for yet another year.

by RamintheUK on Apr 19, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd take Lefevour

He’ll be there in the 3rd

by dbcouver on Apr 19, 2010 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmmmmm? Just draft Bradford? When was the last time he played in a game? How will he respond to playing and getting hit with so much time off? How will he handle being hit by NFL players? Can he adapt to the NFL , not a spread offense? There are too many ifs. Will the offensive line do a better job of protecting Bradford? Is he ready to be the number 1 QB for the Rams right now?

Suh is ready to play his position on the first game day. Get a QB that has some experience to be your number QB temporarily. Groom another QB to be the franchise QB as you build talent at all positions for the entire team.

I know that is playing it safe, but that is how good teams are built to last.

If the Cowboys of the 90's

listened to that advice they would’ve never drafted Aikman and won so many SB’s. NOTHING in life is a sure thing, sometimes you have to roll the dice and hope for the best. Sure you want to me an educated roll, but it’s still a roll none the less.

We don't need to

have ALL the pieces that make Superbowl contender in one offseason, let alone one draft.

by Le Ram on Apr 19, 2010 1:35 PM CDT reply actions

very good point....

it should be a building process over several years… even this up coming year could be another 1 and 15 season as long as we have players who look like good potential in the long run.

by Rams Homer on Apr 19, 2010 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

As I said before

Osi would be a great piece to add. And he would not have to worry a whole lot about getting snaps in our Def. Sorry Hall, you become a rotational piece. I say give them a 5th and be so kind to trade spots in the 4th, which we all know is a very attactive piece sitting at the 1st pick of day 3.

by CaliRamMan on Apr 19, 2010 1:38 PM CDT reply actions

McCoy....

I understand the McCoy-Brees comparisons…. But if the Rams do draft Suh then McCoy, they better be patient enough to have McCoy sit like Aaron Rodgers, in order to learn the offense. Drew Brees didn’t exactly lght the NFL on fire until after the Chargers got Phillips (Brees’ 3rd season) College spread offense QB’s take a little extra time to adjust to the NFL style of quarterbacking. Plus, those thinking the Rams should wait until next year to go after Jake Locker don’t quite understand that if Locker does prove himself a potential franchise QB there is not any guarantee the Rams will be in a position in the 2011 draft to get Locker. Especially if Locker is the consensus number one pick.

by Ricksome on Apr 19, 2010 2:58 PM CDT reply actions

Though I like Locker

I’ve heard the argument that we may not be in position to get him. I have yet to hear anyone who is depending on Locker to be available. It’s a possibility but NO one is DEPENDING on it. NO one thinks it’s a guarantee.

by dbcouver on Apr 19, 2010 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't mean to single you out Ricksome

I’ve heard this before many times and I wonder who it is that puts all their marbles in the wait for Locker camp. I’ve heard of these peoples’ existance but have seen no proof.

by dbcouver on Apr 19, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Waiting for Locker...

Oh, I’ve seen them. Even a buddy of mine here at work keeps telling me how there’s 3-4 QB’s coming out next year that are easily better than any the QB’s coming out this year. This statement usually comes after their testimony that we should pick Suh and that we don’t need to draft a QB this year.

by Rams Homer on Apr 19, 2010 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

3-4 QBs coming out

Is not depending on Locker. Thats depending on any one of 3-4 QBs. That’s a stable expectation comparable to depending on the one. My point is specifically that I hear these arguments about relying on Locker to be available only, no one else. It’s like this invented problem that doesn’t exist, and it’s use in argument, against what I feel are legitimate QB ideas. Just tell your buddy what I’m saying here. Locker is far from the only reason passing on Bradford could work out for us.

by dbcouver on Apr 19, 2010 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I do like the Suh-McCoy draft stragedy...

but your right, it would be best to let Colt sit and learn for 1 season. He probably could be the best of the top three QB’s this year. But would Spag’s have the cahona’s to throw Feeley out there for the whole year with what could be a pivotal year for him? If i were him, it wouldn’t be a problem… but i’m pretty stubborn.

by Rams Homer on Apr 19, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Damn! How'd you all end up talking about quarterbacks?

I thought this post and the subsequent comments were supposed to be about the trade possibilities for Osi Umenyiora.

Anyway, from what I’ve read Umenyiora, who missed the entire 2008 season after having knee surgery, is coming off his worst year in the NFL. Now, is that because Spags wasn’t with the Giants last year or is that because he has not recovered well from the knee injury? I don’t know, you tell me.

Go Rams!

"We can't run. We can't pass. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass. We can't kick. Other than that, we're just not a very good football team right now." --- Bruce Coslett, New York Jets Head Coach circa 1990s

by Nbr1RamFan on Apr 19, 2010 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

Of all pictures, why have one of Osi laying around on the job?

I am getting so confused, I don’t know what I want the Rams to do now. A lot of people are bringing very opinionated points from different directions. Draft Bradford, draft Suh, trade down, draft Clausen, draft Colt McCoy, compare him to Brees, don’t compare him to Brees, move to L.A., trade for Campbell, bring back Bulger, draft LeFevour, wait for Locker, trade for Roethlisberger, bring back Jim Everett, trade Steven Jackson, move to NorCal, get more picks! Sheesh!!!

I think I’ll just get my golf clubs and work on my short game until Monday and then come back and see what happened. Just let me know when it’s my turn to pick on the Community Mock Draft!

by NachoD on Apr 19, 2010 6:12 PM CDT reply actions

Why not mortage the farm this year?

Draft Suh, then trade back up and draft Clausen. Use our 2 & 3 this year and a couple of early picks next year. Concentrate on TE, OT, & D rest of picks and after draft rookie signings. ??

by Midasknight on Apr 19, 2010 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Gee, then we'll only be

short about 11 guys of having a decent team. Suh is terrific and I’d love to see him playing for the Rams, but we can’t then package all our remaining picks to go up and get another couple of guys and call it a day. There are quotes from plenty of teams saying this is a very deep draft and lots of teams will find quality starters in the later rounds.
