Camp Gruden

Jon Gruden has a nice video and writeup on each of the top 4 QB's in this year's draft.  I watched the videos first and then read the writeups and suggest you do the same.

I like how he calls each one out on something stupid they did.

Good stuff.  I'm starting to think Suh+Colt would be a dream scenario for us even if Colt isn't the best QB in the draft because he's still good enough (and I like his fire).

I'm not sure what to make of Gruden's comparison of Bradford to Testeverde.

Enjoy!

I have to admit, I'm a big time Gruden fan

I personally put a LOT of weight on his opinion. I watched him work very closely when he was with the Raiders and I was a new season ticket holder. I was very, very impressed with his entire coaching game.

Bradford seems at least shy

 and at worst withdrawn.

Also interesting that the negative that Gruden pointed out for him was "You are the worst sliding QB I have ever seen. You need to learn how to take care of your body."

I have not been too worried about his injury potential up to this point. Now I’m thinking more about it. Not worried, but thinking more about it.

And not just with that but his lack of a strong personality is just something that is now reinforced — to me anyway — that’s kind of a big deal in your team leader.

Oh well, they will pick who they pick and I’m hoping for the best no matter what. I will not at all be surprised if they don’t take Bradford though. I think they’d really have to see something they love in him besides accuracy. And maybe they do, who knows.

I will watching Gruden Camp in its entirety tonight...

..I haven’t seen any clips of Bradford with Gruden yet. I have seen clips of Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy with him. I watched the clips with the point of view of myself being a manager interviewing these kids for a job. They way it stands right now, I am hiring Colt McCoy. I was not impressed with Clausen. He answered Gruden like he was avoiding the questions or statements and there was very little eye contact. McCoy had constant eye contact and was quick with his intelligent responses. Signs of a leader.

I especially liked when he said that he earned the senior teammates’ respect as a freshman with his leadership in the huddle.

by NachoD on Apr 15, 2010 12:53 PM CDT reply actions

Thought Colt did well too

Although I saw Clausen staring at Gruden, so I can’t agree that there was not enough eye contact. Gruden said he felt like he’d have to kick him out of the office to get him to leave, which makes me think there was a feeling he got that we didn’t see on the clip.

But agree that Colt did well, and I hope his dad lets him have more TV time because the kid does all he needs to do on his own.

Thanks for posting Midas

I had not seen these, and IMO these are more telling about how each QB will fit into the culture of the organization. I like McCoy, Clausen, Teebow, and Bradford in that order. In fact, McCoy, Clausen, Bradford, & Teebow would be on my QB board in that order, if I had one.

I agree 100%

I wanted to take Colt McCoy in the second round before last years season even ended. I also would put the QBs in that order of guys I wanted on my team.

Bradford and McCoy

I saw Bradford’s interview first and first thing that came to mind was I didn’t think Bradford had a lot of respect for Gruden. I think Bradford listened to what Gruden had to say but I saw a boy who knew he had flaws(and knew what they were) and didn’t think looking at them with a stranger was enjoyable. McCoy’s interview was very charming, but I think the segment in general is pretty awkward. McCoy has the likability to keep the TV ratings up but not the football intelligence to win NFL games. I don’t know how anyone can say Suh/McCoy over Bradford/2nd Rd guy, I watched maybe 7 games of McCoy and just got a constant flow of simple decision making, I think McCoy’s version of the spread may have been the worst version of the three (Bradford, Tebow, McCoy). If I was choosing someone for The Bachelor 12 sign McCoy up, but someone to play football I think Bradford and Clausen are light years ahead.

PS This whole personality crap I think is blown way out of proportion, if I thought Clausen was a better football player than Bradford I’d say grab him but I don’t, Bradford is better. If your good enough, people will respect you, that’s it. If your bad your gonna get called out, if your good your not, just don’t be bad.

Personality Crap...

You site an opinion regarding Bradford & McCoy based on what you saw: this is what you claim ppl are blowing out of proportion. You have an opinion of them based on what you saw & their non verbal communication as well. You lose all credability when you do that…

I think it’s important as the leader of the offense you have to bring it. You don’t want anyone that doesn’t have passion for the game, and from what I saw, Bradford has the least passion & leadership ability. He compares to Bulger as a leader; no thanks! I want someone like Warner; Clausen fit that IMO. He wants to learn the game, he wants to command, and is willing to learn from his mistakes. He took criticism well, and wrote down what was told of him. I see him as the next P. Manning as far as running the offense. I also like McCoy & his relaxed attitude. He has potential as well.

by RamsFan1979 on Apr 15, 2010 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Before everyone blows up about his Peyton Manning comment ...

… he said ‘as far as running an offense.’ Not that he’s the next Peyton Manning.

I agree that I was a QB with fire.

Bradford may very well have the strongest arm and be the smartest … but is he tough enough and is he a leader of men?

Devany and Spags will determine the answer to that.

From the Gruden pieces, who do you like? I know it’s not Bradford, LOL, but you have to like one of them.

by RamsFan1979 on Apr 15, 2010 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I liked Colt but I'm still leary of his father ...

… I also still like Clausen.

We are seemingly getting to know that the Bradford we have seen interviewed in the past is the real Sam Bradford … and that means I still think he lacks the fire needed to be a team leader. Maybe he should become an accountant.

Let Cleveland have his measurables.

Regarding Bradford's personality ...

… think about Ray Lewis. Is he nearly as great if he only runs around making tackles?

Ray Lewis is great because he inspires others. A great player makes those around him better.

I just don’t see Bradford inspiring anyone.

… of course, my 16 year old daughter wants us to draft him because he’s ’SOOO CUUUUUTE!!!"

lose all credibility?

Telling you what I saw makes me lose all credibility? I don’t claim people are blowing athletic talent, football intelligence, game experience, college statistics out of proportion. I claim people are blowing personality out of proportion.

What I was trying to convey with my “opinion” was how Bradford’s lack of respect might point to his breadth of football knowledge, that is what is important, not how likable you are or how much reporters want to hear from you. Colt McCoy had a better personality than Bradford, that’s it, espn pointed out an area where McCoy is better than Bradford. Does that matter? I think it doesn’t. The things to factor in aren’t if they make you smile in this interview, it’s if they know what Gruden’s talking about. To judge Clausen on how he gets along with someone isn’t for football, you do your job, this isn’t high school ball. I don’t want someone who knows how to ‘act’ I want someone who knows what to ‘do’, and listening to their jokes or how they stand when they give a handshake is irrelevant. I think theres extensive film supporting Bradford as a great QB, Clausen has some good film too, but when you look at McCoy’s stuff it’s on a whole lower tier. I don’t want a nice guy in the office, I want a smart guy, and before anyone jumps on the Colt wagon-I’m pretty sure he’s mostly nice. We’ll see when the season comes.

by kinzav29 on Apr 15, 2010 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I see it as 'speaking out of both sides of your mouth'

You form an opinion based on the interview, as you stated. This is what you complain about during your PS section. Thinking personality doesn’t affect job performance is your thought to have, but this has been proven to be a fallacy. IMO, it sounds like you want robo-QB. No emotions, just do your job. Maybe you’re missing something about the NFL vs business? I want players that love the game and have passion for it; they’re the ones that really work to become better and lay it all on the line every Sunday.

Let me tell you about what I envision that comes w/Bradford. Think of the DET game last year when we were 3rd down and long. Bulger didn’t have anyone open, ran for the first down, slide…about a yard short. No passion, but all business. That is where I disagree w/your thought process.

by RamsFan1979 on Apr 15, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand

I see what you mean, I pulled out opinions of his ability and intelligence based on his personality. I didn’t mean to contradict my latter statement but I still think I avoided that, I still think personality has(should have) no bearing on football, it might be a reflection of your performance but it won’t affect your performance, and I meant to complain about it being viewed as having an effect on performance rather than reflecting performance. I would much rather have robo-QB’s than energetic ones (eg Joe Montana > Steve Young). I think we both agree that Bradford doesn’t seem as passionate, but I see Bradford keeping us out of losing positions more often than any other QB’s and that’s worth more to me than him winning when in losing positions. Yeah that was probably my bad on the miscommunication, but I still think good/smart teams should put no emphasis on personalities. I mean look at some of the best teams: Patriots-devoid of personality, Chargers-lack of any nice guys, Jets-no one nice etc.

by kinzav29 on Apr 15, 2010 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for understanding...

Yes, we agree Bradford doesn’t have the ‘it’ for either one of us. He has nice numbers, but HOW do they translate to the NFL? I don’t think they do. I think he needs to come along slowly and shouldn’t play his rookie season. This isn’t good for us as we don’t have that luxury. Clausen can step in before the end of the year if he develop’s properly, at least IMO. .

In reality, I’m gonna be excited about whoever the front office decides to draft. I may not agree, but they are the pro’s not me.

One can only hope the Browns get stupid and trade.

What a dream scenario.

The House of Spears reigns supreme

by Eric Nagel on Apr 15, 2010 4:24 PM CDT reply actions

I think McCoy's my second choice.

I don’t like his size, but that doesn’t affect Drew Brees. And he’s only a second round pick most likely which will save us a ton of money and if he doesn’t pan out its not going to set us back as far considering its only a second rounder. That’s not the only reason I want McCoy, but I wouldn’t mind getting Suh/McCoy and McCoy. Suh/McCoy makes our D a lot better. He helps the LBs with the run and just the run D in general, he helps Chris Long get pressure, and creates pressure on his own, which in turn helps the secondary and makes it so they aren’t covering people for 10 seconds. So by getting one of those two could easily help every position on defense, not to mention how it helps the offense with field position. So I’m torn between Bradford and McCoy and McCoy/Suh. For some reason I just can’t make myself like Jimmy Clausen.

by Carneros on Apr 15, 2010 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

You don’t like Clausen even after the Gruden interview? I actually like him more because of the way he took criticism and wanted to be better like Manning, Brady, etc. I really admire the drive he has. He has the tools to be a great QB. McCoy will need to mature, but I’d still take him. He could be real good.

For a while I thought and accepted Bradford as our #1, but it really can’t be. As you and many others pointed out, Suh should not be passed up.

by RamsFan1979 on Apr 16, 2010 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Like I said

I don’t know why I don’t like him. There’s something about him that just makes me not like him. And he didn’t really do a hole lot in the meeting except taking Gruden’s beating like a man. Gruden sounded harsh on him. He compared him to Ryan Leaf and said stuff like that and Clausen didn’t bat an eye. I guess taking a beating like a man is part of being a Rams QB, but I still can’t seem to get behind him.

by Carneros on Apr 16, 2010 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you guys really

believe that one can’t be a successful athlete without being the most talkative or outspoken person out there ? I don’t.

In fact, even though I am not to pick him at #1 (I want Suh), I like Bradford the best in these videos. He seems much more mature than the other three…

One final test drive

I guess the Rams coaches, etc are heading to Norman tomorrow to do a final workout with Sam. I do not know if this is really to work out Bradford with their scripts or start working on a contract :-)

by RBramfan on Apr 16, 2010 12:33 AM CDT reply actions

Hell yeah

Suh in first. McCoy in second. Been saying that for awhile, actually before the season even ended last year. I really hope that happens. Impact on both sides of the ball at positions of need. I saw or heard somewhere that McCoy’s pro day was as good if not better than Bradford’s. He’s not just a likable guy. He’s a winner. He has the most wins in college history and people like to say he has no talent? Crazy talk. He has leadership, passion, fire. Bulger had all the ability throwing the ball. He lacked in the leadership department which is why he is no longer with the team. The leader of your team must have that quality. All the great QBs in the league have that. McCoy has IT. It wasn’t by accident he won all those games and put up good numbers at the same time. I’d say the onlt thing Bradford has over him is height. They have comparable arm strength and accuracy. Colt is more athletic and has way more passion than Sam. He will make everyone around him better and can fire his teammates up and earn their respect.

by illchild on Apr 16, 2010 12:43 AM CDT reply actions

way too much weight...

in a tv special. Bradford blew through all of the team interviews and workouts and has shown he can produce on the field. All his teammates love him and everyone that actually KNOWS him calls him a great leader. Ive seen him talking to his guys on the sideline, patting them on the butt and telling them when they did something wrong. You ever think maybe guys just show out for the camera?

Only people who bring up “leadership” and “charisma” issues are the guys who don’t know Sam funnily enough….

by Bralidore on Apr 16, 2010 10:25 PM CDT reply actions

"the guys who don’t know Sam"

so, how well do you know Sam?

I like the videos because it’s the closest we’ve seen so far to how each kid’s personality comes across in a football coach’s interview process. It’s only a couple of seconds, and edited…yeah we get it….but there is a kernal of their personality on each one. It’s definitely a different environment than Regis and Kelly, or Good Morning America.

But did it have anything to do with

how they deal with their teammates and coaches? They all knew it was a “Made for TV” deal that really didn’t mean anything. Spags and the Rams coaches were very happy with their interviews and screen sessions with Bradford.

I don't know. And I also don't know that the Rams were any happier with Bradford than anyone esle

And I also don’t know how much weight the Rams will place on the interview. I think it’s safe to say they wouldn’t let anyone know their true feelings until they have to.
