Courtney Brown was going to be the next Bruce Smith lol look what happened

that is exactly why you can never be sure even if the player is named SUH lol

by Ram-on on Apr 12, 2010 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

This argument shouldn't be valid.

N’damukong Suh is not Courtney Brown.

Who was the best player available in the 2002 draft? David Carr, the first overall pick? or Julius Peppers? The 2nd pick?

In 2006 the Texans decided not to reach to take a QB 1st overall, but instead they took the BPA on their board, Mario Williams. This turned out to be the correct choice as Vince Young, the trendy pick has suffered from depression and what not. Matt Leinart, supposedly the most refined QB coming out of college hasn’t yet earned a starting job. Jay Cutler actually has turned into a decent quarterback, but still has an inept ability to throw interceptions.

What about 1999? Tim Couch, a Heisman finalist was the first overall selection for the Browns. Was he the right pick because he was a QB? Was he the best player available? Or was it 2nd pick Donovan McNabb? Or perhaps the best pick of the first round, Torry Holt who was 6th overall?

I know hindsight is 20/20, but if a quarterback is not the best player in the draft, why on EARTH would we take him first overall? We are the worst team in the NFL. We’ve “earned” the right to draft the best player. Both Walter Football and even the “geniuses” Kiper and McShay know that Bradford is not the best player in the draft and they both agree that Suh, McCoy, and Berry are elite talents. If we take Bradford first, we are giving ourselves an excuse to lose more by not taking the best available player.

Glad to see some sense being spoken on this blog

I have never argued with the BPA available strategy

but if their is any exception (arguably) to the BPA rule – it is at the QB position. The QB is the most important player on the field (and off some might say) in terms of leadership and play so its importance can bump BPA strategy by needing to make a stretch for the pick.

No DT has ever led their team to a SB, but QB’s have. DT’s play in a rotation – no matter how good they are. Yes, there have been great defensive units as a whole w/o a good QB strong enough to go to the SB but those are few and far between. I would say the SB winning teams had really good to great defenses but also really good to great QB’s as well.

My whole point I guess is to see why you pick a QB over BPA. If you make an assumption that they will both be good players in the NFL (above average), then a good QB should be selected over a good DT any day.

I agree with you that the QB is the most important player on the field.

An intelligent QB makes all of the decision on offense. I am just making the point that stretching for a QB has not turned out well in the past, and we are priming ourselves for history to repeat itself.

As far as DT’s not “leading” their team to a SB? A dominant DT can change the run game for an opposing team. If a team cannot establish the run game and is forced to pass our offense ends up on the field more, giving us more opportunity to score. (And great, I know that “without a QB we can’t score duh!” argument will be coming out soon)

And I’m also not denying that we NEED a great quarterback. What I’m saying is that we don’t NEED one THIS SEASON. We are not going to compete this year. If people think that we are going to draft Bradford and magically become better than the rest of the division then maybe that’s where the problem is. Our team is very very thin. One player will not fix it. This draft is strong in defense. The best players in the draft play defense. We will be picking top ten again next year. In fact Colt McCoy could still be there in the 2nd round. How much is the dropoff really between Bradford and McCoy?

It’s my thought that the best teams are built from the trenches on outward. A DT solidifies our D-line and makes us incredibly strong up the middle.

The problem with continuing to wait to take a QB

is that it takes a young QB two or three years before he becomes effective in the NFL. If we wait until 2011 to take our QB, it will be 2013 or 2104 before he is really producing. Sure Ryan and Flacco did “okay” their first year, but they both had plenty of support from the rest of the team. They weren’t the most important guy in leading the team to wins. We know our QB is going to have to do the job, and he won’t be ready to do that his first year. The longer we wait to pick one, the longer we wait before we have a good QB to lead the team.

I agree that Suh looks like he will be outstanding, and I wish we could have him on our team. I keep asking myself why he wasn’t available last year so we could have taken him then and Bradford now (or vice versa), but it didn’t work that way. I will be happy whether we take Bradford or Suh, and I’m almost more worried about who we take after that. But we have to make a choice and I think it’s time to get our franchise QB, no matter how much it hurts to pass on Suh.

If what you want is a good Qb

with a crappy team around him then Bradford should be the choice. But there were reasons that Flacco and Mark Sanchez took their teams to the playoffs, and it’s because everyone around them was at least an average player. Bradford hasn’t really played much in a year and a half.

I have been a proponent of trading SJax for awhile now. I am much more of a baseball fan than I am a football fan, and in my opinion major league baseball teams are all being run much more effectively lately than they had been. When teams realize that they are at the end of the rope of contention (i.e. aging stars, recognizable stats decreases from the key contributors), then they trade them and restock with prospects. This is the reason the Houston Astros are now absolutely terrible. Their general manager has failed to realize when to trade his players with value and now the time has passed. He’s stuck with Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman until the end of their contracts.

Jake Locker is available next year, and likely would have been the best qb available this year. Trying to trade up for Clausen(from the 2nd round) would most likely be the way to have an impact NFL qb as our starter the quickest due to his NFL offense experience.

Your proof of rebounding is astounding and resounding.

This statement alone has convinced me that Bradford is the best choice for 1st overall.

so are you saying that a DT in this draft is a guarantee? lol that is a joke

don’t even look at the rest of the NFL just look at the Rams first round picks these last few years ,I think you will get the picture ,1st round pick, R.Picket, first round pick,J.Kennedy, first round pick, D.Louis, first round pick A Kerriker, ,That is 4 No 1 picks wasted on DT in the first round and not one is a starting player for this team, were is your guarantee now lol ,oh Suh is better then all those players right ,well no one knows that yet,no mater what position it is a gamble and until they play some games in the NFL you just don’t know ,so ill take Bradford and take my chances with a QB that can lead this team to a champion season
DT are a dime a dozen in the NFL and if need we can always find one to fill the spot
you can only dream about getting a good QB that can lead this team to victory’s

Ok. Let me attempt to reply to this...

Let’s see… the last few years…. last year we drafted…. an OT, Jason Smith… who was considered the Best Player Available. We took DE Chris Long in 2008, Carriker was in 2007, Tye Hill in 2006, and Alex Barron in 2005. So actually we haven’t drafted a DT for the past 4 drafts (Carriker I guess could count, but everyone considered him a DE coming out of college except us apparently).

Your defense of “hey dude look at all these crappy 1st round dts we tokk lolz” is inaccurate. Pickett is the starting DT for the Packers. Jimmy Kennedy is a very useful rotation mate with the Williams pair in Minnesota, widely considered one of the best run stuffing defensive lines in the NFL if not THE best (Jared Allen thanks you boys). And Damione Lewis had a decent but unspectacular year for Carolina last year.

You’re correct in saying that perhaps these men were not worthy of #1 picks, but you can pull poor comparisons for any player and say “hey, remember when we drafted this one guy and he sucked?”

The draft is about scouting and quite a bit of luck. The trick is to control the amount of risk you are taking on. Bradford has hurt himself twice by falling down incorrectly. You think he’s not going to get sacked when playing for the Rams, learning a new offense, behind a left tackle who doesn’t give a crap? “The Blind Side” will be able to be rewritten about why Sam Bradford’s career was finished in a few seasons, starring Alex Barron.

its ok for us to spend number one picks on DT as long as they play some were? lol

I'm saying that they weren't wasted picks.

They had value.

have patience my friend

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.
