Making a case for Jimmy Clausen

I remember someone on Turf Show Times talking about Jimmy Clausen and they used the site http://walterfootball.com/mattblog091229.php. Now i dont remeber who it was who used this info but I found it valuable. I think Sam Bradford is good and if healthy he will be a force, but that is the problem IF. I dont care what people say just because your healthy for your pro day and individual team meetings that does not mean that your not hurt. The wear and tear on his shoulder ( remember twice) will never be back to full strength, while Clausen does get injured too there is one thing that I cannot question and that is his toughness he was hurt for most of the year last year and still played. Jimmy Clausen has a strong arm, is accurate, and in my opinion his confidence is what makes him a good leader. My questions to you all is Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen? and Why? What do you like and not like about the two quarterbacks? Oh yeah please check out that link, very interesting information.

because the person that will help the Rams win football games has yet to come out of college…who? you ask….why none other than Case “sweet feet” Keenum….with Case Keenum and Donnie Avery reuniting in St. Louis we will be bringing in the next “Manning to Harrison” type duo…the two will be an unstoppable force for years…St. Lois Rams 2011 superbowl champions Case Keenum-superbowl mvp

Other

I think we should pick suh 1rd 1pck and Colt McCoy 2rd 1pck. I don’t believe Sam Bradford will stay healthy and Jimmy Claussen isnt worth a 1rd 1pck. I believe Colt McCoy could develope into a very good starting NFL QB.

I said "in my opinion".....and never once did I ever say any rookie is "sure thing" or "can't bust"

I have my opinions, but I’m not foolish enough to think I am infallible.
Words like Must, Sure, Can’t, Always, Never…….rarely do I use these words. I’ve had to come back and eat them too often!

Any of these guys could bust. Any.

Lmao at both your denials!

Actually, Danteslion isn’t in denial. We only think we know. This is all comedy.

Question to CC, if by any chance (McShay thinks so), Clausen drops to say, pick 25ish, should we trade up? Maybe our 2nd and a 5th? How happy would you be if we end up with Suh and Clausen?

Suh and Clausen would be a great draft for me...add a recieving TE, I'd grade it A+

I haven’t thought much about trades or what would be equitable.
I seriously doubt he drops to striking range of the Rams #33 pick but anything can happen.

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

I would also be thrilled with it.

Unlikely yes, but in this case, the whole character issue thing certain pundits have brought up about him could work to our favor.

Personally? I don’t care if he’s an asshole. I like that about Philip Rivers. Why wouldn’t I like that in a Rams’ QB?

I think you’ve misunderstood my stance on Clausen in other fanposts. Yeah, I said he may have maxed out, but what the hell do I know? I actually like his demeanor more than I do Bradford’s or Tebow’s. This guy will trash talk the other team. It’s cool. Hell I love Kobe in the NBA. That stuff can make you better.

Let’s face it, we’re a bad team. He might have that feisty attitude we need, and Lord knows he’s more apt to run our system right now. I’ve seen him endure hard times on the field, more than I can say for Bradford and his flurry of 50 point victories because of superior talent around him.

I think if he’s there in the 20s, we get on the phones. It’s possible.

Where do you think he goes if he gets past Seattle at 6?

I could see possibilities for

#9 - Would not be shocked if Bufflo grabbed a young QB who started to fall. The TO experiment failed because they didn’t have a QB. Lee Evans being wasted.

#14 – Seattle’s 2nd 1st rounder

#17 - I know they have Alex Smith but he hasn’t played well and Mike Singletary aint fo’ the bullshit, if you know what I mean. I would not be at all surprised if Singletary’s 49ers grab Clausen. to light a serious fire under Alex Smith….or usher him to the end of the bench.

#22 – New England let’s a Charlie Weis trained protegy fall past them? Maybe not. Wha better place for him take his next step in pro development?

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

But if he gets past New England at 22, he could very well go to the 2nd round

Niners have two 1st round picks right now, 13 and 17. Seattle at 14 in between them.

After that, though…..we’re talking about (in order) Green Bay, Philly, Baltimore, AZ, Cowboys, Chargers, Jets, Vikes, Colts, Saints

Now maybe Cinci wants a back up to injury prone Carson Palmer, but I bet they go defense. None of them really “need” a QB, in fact some have young guns already, so I highly doubt Clausen goes to any of them.

If he slips past Pats 22, I don’t think there would be any compelling reason for the Rams to trade up to get him because he’s likely to fall all the way down to the Rams 3nd pick.

If they take Suh first, Clausen could, with a little luck, make it to their next pick.
Wow. That’d be a heck of a way to follow up Laurinaitis in last year’s 2nd round

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

I can't imagine the Vikes passing on Clausen

There’s also always a chance of someone else trading into one of those spots.

by brackenthebox on Mar 9, 2010 5:21 PM CST up reply actions

They have 2 younger QBs that they liked enough to go with in Favre declined laast year

The Vikes claim to like their young QB’s and were prepared to go without Favre if he said no. Same this year. I think there’s no way they’re drafting a QB in the first.

The thing about any team trading into one of those spots is they would have already had the chance to take him, so in all liklihood they would not have let him slip past in the first place because it would already be lower than he was projected to go.

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 5:34 PM CST up reply actions

The Vikes have O-line issues too, which may be too hard for them to ignore

Why O-line help? Peterson had a career low in Yards per Carry last year, and for the first time in his career looked ineffective. All Pro Guard Steve Hutchinson turning 33.

Walter has QB as 6 on their list of needs, although I don’t know how accurate that is.

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

They drafted Peterson a year after signing Chester Taylor

so they’ve shown a willingness to take talent over need. Clausen obviously isn’t the talent that AP was, but I could see them taking him just based on value.

I’m not big on what I’ve read from walter football, but that blurb doesn’t speak too well to the current debate:

Move this way up if Brett Favre retires. Tarvaris Jackson is not the long-term answer

and seems to discount any possibility of Clausen:
with such a thin class at the position, Minnesota probably won’t have the chance to obtain its signal-caller of the future this April.

by brackenthebox on Mar 9, 2010 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, me too

I was just talking about what if Clausen fell past 22.

The thing is, I don’t think he will. No way Buffalo would pass on Clausen at #9 or Seattle at #14

Look at Cleveland dropping Derek Anderson today — are they really going with Brady Quinn? They might not let him even get down to 9.

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

ya, I agree

but it’s a long time till the draft, and crazier things have happened. I’m not sure of the exact timeline, but I think Aaron Rodgers was still the consensus #1 around this time of the year he was drafted.

by brackenthebox on Mar 9, 2010 6:08 PM CST up reply actions

Nope

It was Alex Smith. This is something I am 110% positive about. I was working as a busser at the Firehouse in Sacramento (a really nice restaurant). It was about 9:30 and I was just finishing up, only to find out a party of 8 showed up. I was pissed, well until I found out it was SF brass their to drink some wine, eat a nice meal and go over scouting reports and discuss the draft. Granite I filled those water glasses a million times, made sure they always had bread, and found my way around the table as often as possible to hear what they had to say. They were definitely enamoured with Smith. The fact that he graduated in 3 years. That he interviewed so well, they liked his ability to analyze the situations they gave him, blah blah blah. Then he had a big Fiesta bowl. They were set on Smith well before the draft. Rodgers name did pop up every once and a while, but I thought they would have given him more of a consideration because he played right in their backyard.

Its been a couple years

since I’ve been there. I used to work there when I was finishing my last year of college. Scholarship had ran out and I had to pay for the last semester of school. That was the only time I saw them come in. They were saying something about a few of them were in Tahoe and that is why they met in Sac. Although, the Raiders have banquets there all the time. Its cool because they bring in their Super Bowl trophies, rings and framed pics of some of the old guys. Never an Al Davis sighting though.
Normally when groups like that came in they were given one of the rooms down stairs by the wine cellar, but they didn’t have reservations they just walked in and there was nobody hardly there on a Weeknight so they just took a table in the corner. Definitely one of the cooler things i experienced there. I felt like a spy.

See - I thought of this as well...

I thought what if the Rams pulled a “2007 Cleveland” when they drafted Joe Thomas then traded back in when the saw Quinn fall to 22. I thought what if Clausen/Bryant/Bradford fell for whatever higly unlikely reason – would it be worth trading back up.

The problem was that Cleveland also set the price so to speak with what they gave up….they gave Dallas there 2nd round pick (3rd) and the following years 1st to move back up. Thats a fairly steep price that I don’t think I would pay.

Chill!

As long as we know what you’re saying. I’m not exactly sure, but I think I started the Marc Bugler thing. As bad as that was, if you steer clear of the “Fletcher Bradley’s” of the world, you should be fine.

The SeaChickens.....

….released Seneca Wallace, their long time backup today. To me, that means that they are definetely using one of their two first rounders on a quarterback. Initially, I thought we might have a chance at getting Clausen with the first pick in the second round if he would have dropped into the second round ala Drew Brees. I do like the idea of us trading down into the first round to grab Clausen.

What if we waited till someone picked him and then dangled our second round pick and Marc Bulger? Can Bulger be used as trade bait? Is there a market to trade for him?

by NachoD on Mar 10, 2010 1:05 AM CST reply actions

trading down into the first round to grab Clausen

I like that idea too, but they wouldn’t be able to go very far down. Like to 3, maybe.

Seattle and Cleveland both let go QB’s this week….I wonder what that means for Quinn….but for the Seahawks, I think they’re commited to drafting one now. Which makes it dangerous to trade down much, they could trade over the Rams and mess that all up.

by CoachConnors on Mar 10, 2010 8:31 AM CST up reply actions

Other reports here say Seattle

is trying hard to trade for McNabb or Kolb. It will be interesting to see if that comes to anything.

by andyrose on Mar 10, 2010 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Wallace was traded to Cleveland.

Only five players have averaged 25 and 10 in their playoff careers. One of them, Dirk Nowitzki.

by Blair Rocket on Mar 10, 2010 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

Bradford will be Chris Chandelier all over again. He got taken out by a college CB. NFL players way more and will damage that shoulder, but good.

I would prefer Clausen because of his tutelage under a former NFL coach and in more of an NFL system. His blockers were not nearly as good as those from OU.

Gee, I wonder if the Rams

need anyone to keep their water glasses full when they have their meetings discussing the draft. I’d be glad to help.

I like Clausen more

Coach Conners was right on. Pro system+Good health, mechanics, and decision making.People are over hyping that whole added weight for Bradford, what does that mean that now he wont sustain as much injuries. In my opinion soft is soft it took one hit to mess up his shoulder the first time and it took one hit to mess up his shoulder the next. I have seen way worse hits on a college quarterback, come on just look at the Nebraska vs. Texas game. IF WE DONT TAKE SUHHH come on CLAUSEN

by Hakeem J on Mar 11, 2010 11:07 AM CST reply actions

I guess you wouldn't want Drew Brees then either,

since he had a much worse shoulder injury than Bradford.

by andyrose on Mar 11, 2010 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

well let me ask you then

would want to pay a quarterback big money and he is injury prone? Why should we do that when we have had Bulger who has been hurt for just about his whole career? I hate when people say that though because Bradford is no where near Drew Brees’ status at that point. And Brees didnt sign for $40 million guaranteed.

by Hakeem J on Mar 12, 2010 7:30 AM CST up reply actions

How is he injury prone? He's had one injury in his career.

He got hurt early in the year, tried to come back without getting it fixed, and found out the shoulder was still not okay. He’s had one injury. Brees has had one injury, and it was far more serious than Bradford’s, but he hasn’t been hurt again. Why do you think it is so likely that Bradford will be?

The salary guarantee has nothing to do with the question of whether we should draft him or not – you’ll pay a big guarantee to whoever you draft with the first pick, and any of them could get hurt.

If you want the Rams to draft Suh, just say so and don’t keep trying to hide behind the fact that Bradford got hurt once. This is football. People get hurt.
