Draft Defense or Offense?
A few of the online mock drafts that I have been following show wide receiver Golden Tate dropping out of first round consideration and outside linebacker Sean Weatherspoon developing a reputation of being a talker almost detrimental to himself and dropping late into the second round. A lot of us have been pushing for the Rams to select Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy with the first pick and an outside line backer like Weatherspoon in the second round. Choosing these two players would bolster our run defense and make us a better team. By doing this we also hinder our chances of improving the offense especially with the free agent offensive options not exactly being at a premium. By drafting defense now, we are saying wait for Jake Locker next year.
Now pressure is building for the Rams to take the franchise quarterback if Sam Bradford's shoulder checks out when the team doctors take a look at him in a couple of weeks. I can envision the Rams taking Bradford with the first overall pick, then Golden Tate with the first pick in the second round, John Jerry with the first pick in the 3rd round to stabilize the offensive guard position vacated by Richie Incognito and then taking tight end Dennis Pitta in the 5th round. I figure we can still address outside linebacker, defensive line and cornerback in the 4th-7th rounds.
By adding all these pieces to the offense, the defense improves by default because we will increase the firepower enough to lessen the amount of 3 and outs, get more points on the board and avoid having the defense on the field all game. What's your opinion?

I agree to some extrent
even tho I voted D. If our offense found its groove more often then our D could actually rest on the sidelines. Also, to your point, our D lost 3-4 starters due to injuries. Maybe we have more talent than we know. Still, we are in a position to take BPA instead of reaching for a player; if no QB fills the bill then don’t draft one.
Wow, after 28 votes it's deadlocked...
….14 votes for D, 14 votes for Offense. I voted D myself.
With the rumor of Marc Bulger going to the Cards there is obviously value in him. He just needs an offensive line to give him time. I think if we concentrate on defense and use some of our ten draft picks to throw in an offensive lineman or two, a tight end and a backup running back in the later rounds we should be OK. So long as all the guys who were developing and got injured can come back healthy and continue with their development. The NFC West is going to be a lot tighter race this year…stay tuned.
Thats the key!
If the FO thinks that Bradford is actually worth the #1 you take him (personally I do not). Otherwise take the BPA and that is Suh/McCoy.

Defense defense defense
I think focus on the run game and defense will help you guys serve up the Cards and Seahawks.
Equation= 1,2,2,3,3 is a lot better than 1,1,2,3 in a deep draft, especially when your 1 nets you E berry.
Golden Tate = 5' 11'' 195lbs. Donnie Avery=5'11 190lbs.?
The question I ask is Golden Tate going to be anything above Avery? We have a small fast receiver already. I don’t like the idea of taking a receiver in this draft. We need a true #1 and I don’t think any of the WR after round 1 are worth it.
If we take a WR go big! Keep our small guys that we currently have.
I fail to see how height and weight have much to do with being a #1 WR
Steve Smith (CAR): 5-9, 185
Greg Jennings: 5-11, 198
Isaac Bruce: 6-0, 188
Torry Holt: 6-0, 200
obviously, I’m not saying that Tate will become any of these guys (I know nothing at all about Tate). I’m just saying that a receiver’s size isn’t a particularly useful stat in my opinion.

I think he meant as a complement to Avery
You would need someone of a different build to be a beast type reciever like a TO, Marshall, Andre Johnson, etc. …such as Moss is very different from Welker, and they compliment each other well.
He’s just saying we already have an Avery type.
Holt and Bruce were a fine pair
get talented players and you’ll be fine. Big, talented receivers are great, but if I can only have one attribute, I’ll take the talent.

well talent sure, but you wouldn't want to be one dimensional would you?
Welker is one of the best Wides in football but you wouldn’t be successful with a team of Welkers.
Holt and Bruce weren’t the same receiver either. Everyone comes with different stuff, and I don’t think they need to only pick one kind of guy. The pool is never that limited for talent when it comes to WR’s or RB’s. I think they don’t need another Avery or Gibson…it’d be great to have a Moss/Burris type, or a TO/Marshall type….imho.

I think we're in agreement for the most part
just because two WR have similar heights and weights (e.g. Bruce and Holt), doesn’t mean they fill the same mold. I know nothing about Tate. If he’s nothing but a speed guy, then I understand the redundancy problem. All I was saying is that their size has little to do with their role.

I think a big target is a huge need for our QB
With our TE situation being what it is I think I would rather pass on Tate. I just don’t think any WR after Dez Bryant is going to give us anything better than what we already have. Sure it could happen, but drafting a WR out of the 1st round seems to be a risk we shouldn’t take. I think this year, if healthy one of these guys will step up: Avery, Gibson, Robinson, Burton, Amendola, and Brooks Foster.
A big WR would give some assistance to the QB and could take some hits going across the middle. I really wish we snag a TE in FA to help out as well.
I agree with you that size is not the best comparison, but in the rams situation I would like someone big! Tate seems like our Avery already!
Big Target - that's why I keep saying let's get some Tight End hands in
Whoever plays QB for the Rams could sure use a good set of hands on a 6’5" guy who is only 5-7 yards away
Laurent Robinson is 6'2
so if LR is healthy next season why select Dez Bryant?
i think we can upgrade OL or OLB or DE with 2rd. draft this year
I wasnt implying that we should select Dez
I am hopefull for Laurent Robinson next year, he was a nice surprise when he played. I hope our WR’s can stay healthy this year. I’m in the camp for a TE somehow, someway.
I would like to see a OLB or DE with the 2nd rounder.
