My First Post - Bradford, Marshall and Jackson combo?

Hi everyone,

I have been a huge fan of the Rams for many years and I wanted to thank everyone for all the contributions you make to Turf Show Times. Visiting this site for the latest news about the Rams have become part of my daily routine. I especially wanted to thank VanRam, 3k, and ram_rod for dedicating some of their time to really keep us posted on what's going on at Rams Park. One of the things that I really enjoy about TST is that everybody is respectful and polite. We all are trying to come up with ways of making our team better. I have seen other Rams forums in which many people are extremely rude and disrespectful with each other and that's just plain sad.

I have close ties to Saint Louis. My wife (she is a Saint Louisian) and I graduated from SLU and we now live in Los Angeles because of my job. We are huge Rams fans so we even flew to Seattle to see the Rams play at QWest for their season opener. It was an amazing experience (and a tough one too). A good friend of mine has great season tickets for the Seahawks so we were sitting just a few rows from the field. I proudly wore my Marshall Faulk jersey and as expected, I received a ton of trash talk during the game but It was all good, we all share something, our love for the game.

As many of you, I have been a little disappointed about the first day of the Free Agency market. We have seen some teams trying to make things happen (Bears, Lions, Ravens,...) and we are still seating tight. In my opinion, the Rams need to make a bold move to start being competitive right away. Rams fans have been suffering for too many years now to end up again in the bottom 5 of the NFL. I still have faith in Devaney and Co. but they need to move quick before all the big names are gone.

Here is what I propose and I would like to hear what your thoughts about this plan are:

- Get a true #1 WR: Before writing this post I was going to suggest getting Boldin or Marshall (but Boldin just signed for the Ravens!) so I say let's be aggressive and get Brandon Marshall. He is one of the top 3 WR in the league and would work great in our offense. He is extremely difficult to stop when he has some momentum (grabs tons of YAC) and would open the field along with Avery for Steven Jackson. Can you imagine what having a passing game would do to Steven Jackson's game? Perhaps we could trade our #2 this year and our #3 next year along with Barron. I am not sure, but we need to take our chances and be aggressive. Just make it happen! I am terrified with the thought of the Seahawks taking Marshall. They may have some issues with their OL and at QB but Marshall is young and the Seahawks are going to turn this ship around in 1-2 years. I am not against paying a high price in draft picks in exchange for someone with talent. Like some people say, I rather pay top money to someone that has played in the NFL than to someone that still needs to prove if they can play in the league.

- Get Bradford and we have our franchise QB: I have been in the Suh bandwagon for a while but if Sam Bradford checks out medically, we should take him. If he doesn't check out, take Suh and perhaps keep Bulger as a stop gap for 1-2 more years. Having someone that can catch the football would definitely help him.

- Resign Witherspoon and go defense in the draft: We solidify our defense with someone that already knows our system and take advantage of the talent in this year's deep draft.

- Sign one of the other big names if possible: DE Kapman or TE Scheffler.

What do think about having QB Bradford, WR Marshall and RB Jackson lined up? I think people would start respecting us immediately. I personally am willing to pay a high price with picks to make it happen. I also believe that going offense helps our defense. If you have a good defense (and I think our defense wasn't as bad as some people think) but they spend most of the game on the field, at some point they have to break apart. Having a stronger offense would take some pressure off our defense and help them keep their game up.

What are your thoughts? Does anybody know if the Rams are considering Marshall? Let's make it happen!!!

Go Rams!!!

Re: My First post-Bradford, Marshall and Jackson

Good afternoon! I am also a long time Rams fan! I have lived in Southern California all my life and although it was unfortunate they never made it to the superbowl while in Cali…they at least made it as I’m still a true fan. My wife and I made a trip out to their last playoff run many years ago when they got beat by the Falcona in Atlanta…we were 2 of probably 50k fans that had Rams jersey’s…but it was well worth the trip and the plane ride out to represent my Rams in true fashion!
I like the idea you have going on….I’m just going to put a little twist onto it which some Ram fans may think I’m crazy…other’s may not. It’s based of the same thought process as you’ve mentioned above which is why I decided to reply to your post.
You are absolutely right, we are very soft in our offensive core, we need some definite playmakers to be added…and added quick…I love the plan of Bradford, Marshall and Jackson….but I had a similar idea..I was thinking this morning about Vick, Marshall and Jackson…let me tell you why.
Bradford appears to be a great qb and honestly I have to sit and watch more on him before I can make any judgements but we’ve all see how mobile Vick is in the pocket. The Rams lack a couple things that other teams have. Other teams have two RBs to compete and to run. I feel if we feed too much as fans into Steven Jackson’s head, it may give him a reason to slow is work down, and rely on the coaching team to get the other players better. I get that and can understand that, but he’s paid to do a job, he’s doing his job and I hope he continue’s to work 100%. I fear if we go with Bradford and Marshall, he’ll rely on those two to make things happen…similar to a Tomlinson…or as far back as Bettis…If you get someone like Vick, he may not be there to threaten his job, but I feel he’s another option that can take off running…and he can throw…so you kill two birds with one stone instead of having to get a great qb and another running back. I feel this will open that passing game even more…it will give the defenses three points they have to cover…the run game from the rb….the run game from the qb….and the passing game…they would be unstoppable with just two additions to their team. I feel Marc Bulger is still a decent qb and could stay around as a second string and put feely at 3rd string.
Anyhow, overall, I was pretty disappointed in the Rams making no moves except Feely for the Free Agency….I really hope they do something cause a rookie qb isn’t going to work, he needs the right tools to be successful

Nice idea

Interesting idea Kevinarrieta. I would have pushed for your plan before they signed Feely. Not so sure if we want to have Feely and Vick since neither one would be a long-term solution. I agree on the motivational factor you brought up, that’s why I think ideally we should get a competitive #2 RB.

The only problem with that

is that Marshall has a 1st round tender. Without working something out, we’d give up our 1st round pick if we signed him to an offer sheet.

But I’d love to have him.

2011 #1 pick?

ram_rod… I know that a #1 pick is a really high cost. Do you know if we could give them our 1st round pick in the 2011 draft? (I obviously would not give them our #1 pick this year). If so, I would take that chance. If we have our QB and WR situation figured out, I think we could be very close to be competitive again so our #1 pick may not be as high again next year. I also believe that Spags can get the best out of any DE, DT, CB so he may be able to do marvels with relatively low cost players. Perhaps, I am being a little aggressive here but we need to be in order to turn things around in the short, mid term.

Great post!

I’m a Rams fan from LA as well. I’ve been critical of the Bradford speculation, but I understand the thought process behind it and would certainly welcome him to the Rams. Whether you’re in the Suh camp or the Bradford camp, it’s clear we’re all just really passionate about making this team a winne again.

I love the idea behind Marshall, but the high tender they placed on him seems to make it impossible.

Another post mentioned Mike Vick. I scoffed at the idea a while ago because it just didn’t seem right, but then I thought about his impact, not in the passing game, but in the run game. He may have lost a step, but defenders still have to respect him. Which means that he can freeze linebackers and allow Steven time to burst through the line. He’ll never be accurate, but he does have some zip on the ball still. I think it wouldn’t be as bad a stop gap as everyone thinks.

One person I think we SHOULD consider is Thomas Jones. I mean, quite frankly the production speaks for itself. I’m not sure where he stands right now, but having two guys that are physical, Pro-Bowl runners, with our offensive line, would be awesome. Again, I am clueless as to where he stands, but I’m surprised we haven’t mentioned him more. Defenses would never get a rest because once bruiser Steven goes out for a puff, another smaller bruiser comes in to continue the punishment. I think that would solve a lot of our offensive woes.

Just throwing it out there. Let’s face it, there aren’t many big names left and we need to make at least a little splash.

Brian Westbrook

Since the Rams are turning into Giants-Eagles West, why not take a look at bringing in Brian Westbrook to be Steven Jacksons backup. Over the past few years, Westbrook appears to be the only running back who would most closely compare to Marshall Faulk’s game. I’m not saying he is another Marshall Faulk, but his game is very similar to his. A steady, heady runner coming out of the backfield who is always able to make catches and turn it upfield. At his advanced age, he would be better off being relegated to a backup role and he knows Shurmurs west coast offense probably better than anyone else in the league.

Just throwing it out there…

Look at all the games he's missed last 3 years though

I don’t think his health is reliable, he’s been ridden hard.

by CoachConnors on Mar 7, 2010 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

All those concussions he has suffered

are pretty scary. I think he would be better off retiring before he hurts himself permanently.

Thomas Jones is an excellent RB,

although he is getting up a little in age. However, I’m not sure how receptive he would be to come into a situation where he is clearly the second string RB behind SJ. I think he still wants to be a starter. Still, if he would accept that situation, it would really help the Rams.

yes that would be great is ot going to happen proly not

thats a pipe dream.. i am so down on this team it’s not even funny anymore. i hate watching a loser week after week.. i said it for 2-3 years we need to get some offance we need db’s we need lb’s..oj is very good ballhawk but not as good as darrin sharper from the saints..i would give him 6 mil he is worth that no more. he gets beat back there but he is a hard hiter..as far as offance s jax and nothing else ..simple add players. marshall would be great.but the thing is no one wants to play for a 1 and 15 team..bulger was great. but when we lost i.bruce we took the heart out of the team..plz rams do something quick becuse it’s realy hard to chear for you.. i will keep it up like i allways do but plz give me something to watch on sundays..

now how to fix it

bulger we need to get him a wr like a holt..marshall is awesome give a 1st and a 3rd from next year maybe? or trade down 2 three times stock up draft picks 2’s and 3’s give denver our #1 after we trade down a few times and stock pile picks..because lets face it. 1 guy aint going to do it..dt sue and mCcoy look good..but so did long and cariker..i would love to have a proven wr for years to come. l robinson good #2 avary at #3 and mashall at #1 ..looks good to me and gues what bulger will look great again he was a pro bowl qb i think he still got it..and get a back up for s jax c taylor from vikes would have been great or sproles but thats out..and and a te would be great for once….that would fix your offance..right there and get you 17-24 points a game not great but dam better then 5 to 9 point avg the last 2 years..next love that mlb we got now we need beef up front..robbins would be a good sign. but he is old and could get inj. are def is to far away from a good fix we need a total re vamp..olb’s and a de long i hate to say it but he sucks bad he gets pushed off the line littel is still great we need him 1 more year. get what u can in later rd’s with more picks and later rounds i mean 2’s and 3’s not 5’s and 7’s.anyway thats my 2 cents..if we stick it out and stay at #1 we have to take sue 32 bench press vs mccoy’s 23..we need a strong de not 1 that gets pushed around like long..i think long should be moved to olb he is fast and i think would be great rusher comeing off edge like kevin green was..do it rams do it try it i think it will work..if we get bradford we are stuck again at1-15..unless we get bradford and marshall tehn at lest we will be fun to watch

by j corn on Mar 7, 2010 10:52 PM CST reply actions

Everyone agrees trading down would be good,

but you have to find someone willing to trade up to the first pick for it to happen. Everything I read says no one wants to do it. The salary and bonus you have to give the first pick is just so big no one will take it on. And the teams right behind us in the order all want to trade down as well. You can’t trade down if no one will trade up, and there simply isn’t anyone.

If we would trade for Marshall we would have him for one year and he would be gone. Are you prepared to offer hime $10-15 million a year to get him to sign a longer term contract with us? He is all about the money. I agree we need more offense, but you have to be realistic about the options.

by andyrose on Mar 8, 2010 12:15 AM CST up reply actions

Look at how WR's develop. Usually takes their 3rd year to show up, rarely their 2nd, and almost never the 1st

We have some good young Wides, I think they’ll be better this year than people might think because of the usual time needed for WR’s to get it. I’m not saying there’s a Brandon Marshall in there, but even Marshall only had 20 receptions his rookie year.

Avery is coming into his 3rd year, and he will finally have some consistancy with his coaches and offensive system. Danny Amendola has only played 1 year and had 43 catches…as many catches as the Titans 2009 1st round pick, Kenny Britt, who had 42. Brandon Gibson was just drafted in 2009 he played strong in his rookie year.

That’s a lot of youth that’ll be coming online in the next year or two.

by CoachConnors on Mar 8, 2010 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

I agree...

…that’s why I think the Rams can put less of an emphasis on drafting a wideout. The “Teen Squad” has some promise. Don’t forget Laurent Robinson was becoming the go to guy before he got hurt.

by NachoD on Mar 8, 2010 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

Check out this little stat line on Amendola and guys in his draft class

Right here. How can we not be optimistic about him?

It usually takes a WR until their third year, so Avery should be coming on this year and Amendola and Gibson should be showing up strong by next year….but having so many young WR’s, Robinson is the oldest at only 4 or 5 years in the league…..I think they are going to surprise people with how good they end up being.

by CoachConnors on Mar 9, 2010 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

It's weird

how some people have WR as a #2 or #3 need for us and some, (me included) have it as a non-need unless a big one drops to the 5th or so from the 1st or 2nd.
