Please explain the logic
I'm not understanding what the Rams front office is doing with free agency thus far. The only move we have made as far as bringing someone is A.J. Feely who is destined to be Kyle Boller's replacement as the number two quarterback. I am puzzled by what we have done with the free agents on our roster. For a team that has won only three games in the last two years there are a LOT of holes on team that need to be addressed. But some of the players who are being released or nearly released are players who are in my opinion doing a fairly good job of filling some of those holes.
Osh Atogwe has been tendered at the right of first refusal level which means any team can make him an offer and if we don't match it, we lose him with no draft pick compensation. Our secondary is not the best in the league but Togs is main attraction back there. Hopefully someone will offer him something we can afford to keep him on board.
Then I am hearing that the Rams have told Richie Incognito that they are interested in resigning him. WHAT?!! Cogs and his penchant for killing drives with his ill timed penalties kept us from winning a game or two (or more). I was glad when they cut him and I don't want him back!
Daniel Fells (TE) and Gary Gibson (DT) were two of the pleasant surprises on the roster for last year and I thought that they had secured a spot on the team for the upcoming year with their play. Gibson got hurt but I had him penciled in as the starting defensive tackle next to Clifton Ryan next year if we don't draft Suh or McCoy. Fells has been playing some good ball at the tight end position since the end of the 2008 season. I'm sure you all remember the touchdown he scored with the fake field goal against the Lions (which happened to be our only win). I figured if we could draft someone like Dennis Pitta in the fifth round and with Derek Fine on board that we would have a very good set of tight ends.
Mark Setterstrom has always been a good offensive line player for us no matter what position we put him at. The fact that he is able to play multiple positions is what gives him so much value. He did have a problem staying healthy I will admit, but when healthy he was an important cog on the team.
Right now going into the draft there are a few holes to fill but by losing these players there are even more holes to fill. With the Rams seemingly putting their wallet away during this free agency period, we have even more work to do. GOTTA GO TO WORK!

I agree.
Very weird. The whole thing kind of pisses me off. Then again, it’s only Day 1. Maybe we are going to see some crazy stuff in a good way start to go down.
We don't have Fine, we waived him today.
And I can’t say I’m too happy with how things have gone thus far. Hopefully things will look like we know what we’re doing soon. Hopefully by April we’ll have an idea. I think we’re basically sitting this one out until the cap comes back and we can get some young FAs again. So without a cap, we’re not doing anything but drafting players.
I think we may be waiting
for better deals. Free agents signed early are generally over-priced. Better deals do come later.
Incog...
would he be an upgrade to Barron. Meaning if Cog’s ‘learned his lesson’ would we rather have him or Barron? Cog’s kept it under control for a bit, but Barron didn’t last very long before his old habits started again. In reality Cog’s could be a back-up, but he’s got a lot to prove to be moved to a starter.
Maybe they are freeing up some dead weight so they can make a few ‘upgrades’. If the dead weight doesn’t find a job we can sign them for less money. Just an idea of their thought process, cause that’s what we all find peculiar.
Bringing Incognito back
would completely undermine Spagnuolos authority, IMHO, and shouldn’t even be considered.
But
would you be surprised, granted it is a different group is running the show, but it sure seems we tend to make bad personel moves quite frequently over the past few 8 years.
Why? That's up to Spags to decide, isn't it? If he gave his ok...
I think its more likely that Spags and Cogs have spoken, and Spags gave the ok for him to be resigned. I don’t think Cogs would be coming back thinking Spags and Devaney are not united in this…after all the went through with the pillars excercise, the release of Cogs earlier…its extremely unlikely they’re going to throw away all that effort and send signals to the locker room that Spags doesn’t have full support.
If Cogs is back, its because Spags believes in him.

I have a hard time believing
Coach gave his OK. But i could be wrong. Whats it say after being given 2 chances last year, then one more this year. After the parting shots he threw out last year? Must have been quite a reconciliation.
I have not heard even one report
that says the Rams are signing Cogs. Where is this coming from? Just because he stopped by Rams Park we are definitely signing him? Please give us some reliable sources.
I have a hard time believing
they woud undermine the coach like that when they have gone to such lengths to build pillars and character and all that.
I am surprised people would first assume the coach did not approve. Has anyone heard that he doesn’t? If I am going to assume something, I am going to go with what makes sense first.
Devaney has shown to be pretty sharp. He wouldn’t sign the guy knowing Spags doesn’t approve. That’d be the first drop of chemistry poison…the locker room has to know the management backs up the coach and they showed last year they did. So why would it be different now?

Are we not agreeing here?
I’m saying Incognito isn’t coming back because he’s poison. You’re saying, and correct me if I’m wrong, if he comes back it will be with the coaches approval. If I’m wrong here then I’m lost.
You have a hard time believing they have the coach's ok...I see now
I thought you meant he was coming back without the coach’s ok, when you meant he was not going to get the coach’s ok in the first place. Got it.

I think Fells, Gibson and Sets
can all be explained by the fact that the Rams don’t think they are worth $1.25 million each, which is the minimum tender amount. They probably are trying right now to sign them for less than that to bring them back.
I heard Cogs was in the building today, but heard nothing that said they were thinking about signing him. Do you have a reliable source that is providing that info?
He was told by the Rams
that they might have some interest in re-signing him. They “might” have “some” interest. That’s a long way from saying the Rams are going to sign him and that Spags has given his okay. It sounds closer to a polite brush off to me than an agreement to sign him. “Yeah, sure Cogs, I’ll call you.” Stranger things have happened, but I sure don’t see anything that says they are close to signing him.
At any time on this post...
Did I say the Rams were GOING to resign him? I don’t think so, I was just relaying the information that the Rams have INTEREST in resigning him.
There's a long way between
“are interested” and “might have some interest”.
Yeah. Then we get the first choice again next year.
Of course, there won’t be any fans left, but how many teams get the first choice in the draft two years in a row?
I recall the Browns having it in 99 and 2000.
Only five players have averaged 25 and 10 in their playoff careers. One of them, Dirk Nowitzki.

Sure. With a new owner, I bet lots of employees want to keep losing.
Makes all the sense in the (bizzarro) world

It's been one day
no need to be pessimistic.

The Front Office Is Doing It Right
The only reason we haven’t signed many free agents is because they are all aging veterans with not much to offer to a team in the rebuilding stage and the draft is the better wauy to go about rebuilding a team. And the only reason OJ Atogwe wasn’t signed to a long term deal is because he is not worth 7 million even though he thinks he is so the rams are letting him explore his options because they know no one will offer him 7 million. And all the players that were released didn’t make that big of an impact last season. Go Spags!!!
I'm happy they didn't abandon their game plan just to make fans happy
Building through the draft is how better teams get long term success. It’s an industry best practice in a salary capped sport. I’m not really sure why more guys don’t look at it that way. Desire for instant gratification, I guess.
I was happy they were going to talk to Sproles, I think that might’ve been a good sign if it would’ve went forward. But as far as what’s taken place arond the league, I really haven’t seen any deals that I thought were so great the Rams made huge mistakes by not over-bidding other teams to get them.
They showed me they can draft well last year. They showed me they can trade well this year — practically ripping off a free 5th rounder from Philly. They get the benefit of the doubt from me at this point.
