Rams making A.J. Feely their next warm body at QB?

The St. Louis Rams are reportedly close to striking a deal with free agent QB A.J. Feeley. The 32-year-old Feeley spent last season as a backup on the Panthers. He has not thrown a pass in an NFL game since 2007.

(Hat tip to Carneros for his comment).

Read whatever you want into the situation, but I think this is purely about getting a backup QB who knows the offensive system. Feeley has just 15 starts since being drafted in the fifth round in 2001. Feeley replaces Boller, in my opinion.

So, what does this move say about the Rams plans to address their starting QB situation? Not much really. Feeley would be a backup whether or not the Rams drafted Bradford, kept Bulger or traded for someone else. The only question I have is whether or not Feeley would supersede Null for the #2 QB job. That probably depends on how Null does in camp and the preseason.

And there you have it, folks, the Rams first move (maybe) of the 2010 free agency period.

Good move

AJ Feeley has a little game.Feeley a better option than boller or null.

Jersey number dilemma

is we draft Bradford. Who’s to wear #14 ?

Anyway I like this signing. Cheap and experienced in the system. Ideal when you want to groom the future of the team…

We just waived Derek Fine
Rams waived TE Derek Fine.
The Rams plucked him off waivers less than three weeks ago, so it’s possible that Fine’s knee didn’t check out. Fine landed on I.R. last year with an undisclosed knee injury, and he’s now been surprisingly dumped by two teams.

.
So we have Bajema at TE right now.
Its my lucky day with Rotoworld today.

A,J. Feeley's draft analysis

“Small frame, pocket passer. Struggles with pressure at times, and accuracy questionable. Most likely won’t fit the mold in west coast style offenses and backup at best.”

JUST KIDDING… :-)

The signing of Feely

makes no sense to me. Now we have 4 guys that probably don’t fit into the big picture. I don’t get it. If we release Bulger, we have to add someone better than Feely, Null, or Reily into the mix.

by Carneros on Mar 5, 2010 12:03 PM CST reply actions

I don't think so either

Which means, we could potentially have Bulger, Feely, Null, Reilly, and Bradford/Clausen/draftee. I don’t see how Feely fits in there at all.

by Carneros on Mar 5, 2010 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

smoke & mirrors....

Feely could get cut and not even make the team. Tho, give him a shot as a back-up; he’s cheaper than Bulger and Boller was never good at all. Maybe it goes Null, Feely, Reilly for this season? I just don’t see Bulger a Ram this season.

Everything I see are the Seahawks going after players I want

Kampman, Watson, and there’s like 5 other players linked to the Seahawks. We need to do something.
I think we could end up with Willie Parker because nobody else seems to want him.

by Carneros on Mar 5, 2010 12:54 PM CST reply actions

Bulger

The only way in the world Bulger sticks around is if this team doesn’t draft a QB in the first three rounds. That’s not going to happen.

Why would you keep Bulger? He’s making over $10 million per year, isn’t getting any younger and 2011 is a lockout season. The guy is GONE.

by Denotion on Mar 5, 2010 12:55 PM CST reply actions

All of that makes 100% complete sense, but...

This is the St. Louis Rams we are talking about. They will keep Bulger, sign Feely and then draft Bradford. Sit back and watch.

It’s like watching the replay of 9/11. You don’t want to watch it but it’s impossible to turn away….

On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.

Ouch!

Maybe refer to a train wreck instead of 9/11?

by RamsFan1979 on Mar 5, 2010 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

What's it matter?

If they aren’t worried about the salary, and it doesn’t count against the cap, then what’s it matter what Bulger is making?

Sounds official now
The Rams have reportedly agreed to terms with QB A.J. Feeley on a two-year contract.
The 33-year-old is no better than an average backup, but he knows offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s system and fits well in the West Coast offense. If all goes well with Sam Bradford later this month, Feeley will be holding the clipboard for him in St. Louis.

I don’t get it. He’s 33 and hasn’t even played 16 games yet. So this means Bulger’s gone and Bradfords in? That seems to be the most likely thing. Now its down to Null and Reilly for 3rd QB spot.

by Carneros on Mar 5, 2010 1:01 PM CST reply actions

depends

the issue with Bulger is that he makes $10 million next year. If they bring him back, it would have to be a reduced amount, but Bulger may well be able to catch on somewhere as a backup for more money than the Rams would like to pay him.

Turf Show Times

by VanRam on Mar 5, 2010 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

If we could do that

I don’t think we would’ve signed Feely. I don’t think there is room for both Feely and Bulger on this team, unless they are planning on Bulger starting for the next two years. Maybe this means Bulger will retire, like Tacklebox said.

by Carneros on Mar 5, 2010 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

Why?

Why would Bulger have to take a pay cut?

To clear up misconception...

Feely replaces Boller, not Bulger. Bulger will either stay or be replaced by a first day draft pick QB. There are too many people who act like they’re at Rams Park when the decisions are being made. I’d like to know exactly how are they so sure that Rams will draft Bradford.

by Da Rams! on Mar 5, 2010 2:13 PM CST reply actions

Personally

I think this move points more to a Bradford draft pick. I don’t see them going after another
FA quarterback and looking to head into training camp with Bradford, Feeley, Null, and maybe Reilly. Odd man out between Feeley, Null, and Reilly gets cut.

Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.

I like Bradford, but...

I just don’t like him with the first overall pick. I’m in the ballpark that if they don’t trade down they should get Suh and try to get Texas QB McCoy.

Same old stupid Rams talk

Even with Spags, same old Rams draft b.s. talk and trade b.s. talk.

We really are “silenced by the lambs!”

A,J, FREELY

Did they get him for free? I guess we are truly desperate now. I hear JEFF GEORGE thinks he can still play! Come on RAMS, dont throw away 2010 also. He’s not the cure or the answer. How bout COLT BRENNAN? He’s riding tailgate in Washington, see if you can get him instead.

SAME OLD STUPID RAM TALK

AMEN BROTHER! A new ring master but the same old CLOWNS making bad decisions.

by California Mobile CPR on Mar 5, 2010 6:58 PM CST reply actions

Now we have four useless QB's = Bulger, Boller, Null and Feeley

Spags, you’re pissing your shot at a head-coaching career away. Another dumb move with Feeley. Maybe you can try to revive Ryan Leaf next? 2-14 or 3-13 will get your as* shown the door this year, and deservedly so.

by edpjr on Mar 5, 2010 9:35 PM CST reply actions

Buffalo is still desperate for a QB.

Do you think they would give us something worthwhile in trade for Bulger?
