Rams tender Ryan at the second-round level & other RFA news
The St. Louis Rams have tendered an offer to DT Clifton Ryan at the second-round level. The move pays the fifth round pick from 2007 a one-year salary of $1.684 million. The move shows just how highly the Rams think of Ryan's ability.
DE Victor Adeyanju also got an offer at the fourth-round level, his original draft round in 2006. That's an improvement for Adeyanju, who didn't even dress early in the season with Spags preferring undrafted rookie DE C. J. Ah You in the lineup instead. The Rams have a shortage at DE with James Hall and Leonard Little both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents when free agency opens Friday.
Meanwhile, in other RFA news, the Broncos tendered a first-round offer to WR Brandon Marshall and a second-round offer to TE Tony Scheffler. Both are considered trade targets once the trading period opens Friday. The Rams have been linked to Scheffler already during this offseason, and the Broncos might be willing to accept less than a second round pick for him, similar to the Rams RFA offer to Alex Barron.
Washington tendered QB Jason Campbell at the first-round level, as expected, and it sounds like they won't be trading him this season.
It's almost Christmas in March!

Tony Scheffler or Greg Olsen - If we could get one or the other Who would you rather get?
I’m not so sure about going after Tony Scheffler. Wouldn’t we just be buying another team’s problems? This past January the denverpost reported that Josh McDaniels told Scheffler not to suit up for their game against the Chiefs and that was because of his attitude. Besides that even though they are both young guys, if everything else were equal and you would go for youth, Olsen is 24 whereas Scheffler is 27 (3 years diff. or maybe only 2)
I think I’d rather see the Rams go after Greg Olsen (if that is even possible) but in either case I hope the Rams don’t give up any draft choices for either of them. We just have way too many needs for that.
Go Rams!
"We can't run. We can't pass. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass. We can't kick. Other than that, we're just not a very good football team right now." --- Bruce Coslett, New York Jets Head Coach circa 1990s
About the Sheffler benching
I don’t know if that was more about Sheffler or more about Josh McDaniels. Seems as though McDaniels came in with pre-conceived ideas about certain players, and not just the one named Jay Cutler.
Woody Paige, writer for the Denver Post said:
Truthfully, I didn’t think Scheffler was a bad attitude guy. He just voiced what a lot of other players were thinking, and McDaniels never liked him from the beginning — and wanted to get rid of him when Jay Cutler left.
And , Jeff Legwold, also writing for the Denver Post, said:
Scheffler said he was never specifically told by McDaniels why he was being benched, but it was said to be because Scheffler had been overheard by teammates saying he couldn’t wait for the season to be over.
Would the Bears be interested in Alex Barron?
They obviously need a tackle after the experiment with Orlando Pace ended. Mike Martz knows the player too. If anyone would be willing to grab him it’d be the coach that selected him.
Alex Barron and a 2nd day pick for Greg Olsen?

Rams have an extra 5th round pick, right?
The Rams are trying to trade Barron, we know that from them asking only a 2nd round compensation for him, when they could ask for a first.
I bet Sheffler comes a lot cheaper. He’s probably not as good a player, but I don’t know…he can catch. I think he lead the league for TE’s yards per cactch or something like that. Up there. I don’t know who I’d rather have. Probably Olsen
Personally I don't see Scheffler as worse then Olsen
But I do see Olsen as having more upside. Either of them would be a great addition.

Olsen's biggest negative is
he isn’t really a tight end. He can only catch the ball. He does nothing else that a tight end is expected to do. Not even respectfully.
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.

Not even respectfully
lol, funny.
You think the lack of blocking is why they are getting rid of him? Martz doesn’t use a lot of TE hands. He probably wants someone who will do the other things.

I think it's the "use" thing.
Olsen has value and if Martz ins’t going to use him, then they probably figure they might as well get something for him 1) while they can and 2) coming of his best season (by far) as a pro.

it's tough
they are both the same size according to nfl.com 6-5 and 255lbs. Both have been productive in their careers with similar qb situations. Greg is 3 years younger at 24 and both have had some problems with injury but it rarely holds them back during games. The only concern i have is whose a better run blocker. Denver has always had a pretty good o line and running back so it’s hard to compare to the bears who had one of the worst lines. Greg is coming off a great season and seems to be drama free he would be a real help to who ever is coming in at qb. (I think the Tony deal is more realistic though)
It's no question who the better run blocker is.
Greg Olsen doesn’t block anyone.

Another player I'd like to see targetted from an RFA standpoint is Richard Marshall (CB Panthers)
He was only tendered with a second round tender…and he’s quite a promising young CB. It’s not exactly a huge need, as far as a second round pick standpoint, but I think the secondary we have now with him in it would be one of the better in the league, supposing that everyone comes back from their respective injuries.
I’d really like the Rams to be aggressive on the free agent front. Not signing huge names for outrageous money mind you (like Julius Peppers), but trying to find smart deals on players like Tony Scheffler/Greg Olsen, Kampmann from GB, etc.
Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of player that could help this team out there…

Yes, it's possible there will be guys out there who could help us.
But I can’t see giving away the #33 pick in the draft for any of them. There is a feeling the Rams will be able to trade that pick for a couple of 2nd rounders after the first day of drafting is done. It’s an extremely valuable pick. We need to get more than someone who is promising for a position where we don’t have a huge need.
I’m wondering if we could trade Barron for Olsen straight up. We tendered Barron at a first round level, and he has been a starting OT his entire career. We say we would take a 2nd for him. The Bears tendered Olsen at a 2nd round level to begin with. Sounds like an even deal to me.
