3k's 2010 Mock Draft, v4.0 (March 22nd)

Author's note: This mock was completed before the NFL released compensatory picks, so the additional picks at the end of the 3rd round (to the Bengals, Titans and Falcons) are not included.

Round 1

1 - St. Louis Rams - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma (M, E, W, D)

  Nothing since my January mock has changed my opinion here.  If nothing else, it just confirmed how motivated Bradford is to earn his stripes.

Pulse of the Nation (Turf Show Times): To me, adding DT Fred Robbins and bringing in QB A.J. Feeley are similar moves; the Rams are going to have to bring in a legitimate QB of the future and make a simliar move at DT.  These two veterans are the mentors for whoever fills those spots.

2 - Detroit Lions - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska (M, E, W, D)

  If they don't trade down, I fail to see how the Lions pass on Suh.

PotN (Pride of Detroit): The community's mostly behind the move, but it would certainly give them an expensive front four compared to other 4-3 D-lines (great post, BTW).

3 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma (M, E, W, D)

  I could still see them taking Eric Berry (S, Tennessee), but the chance to resurrect their namesake defense is greater with a DT like McCoy.

PotN (Buc' Em): If the Bucs do go for a DT here, they'll still need to address safety...unless they grab a name we're familiar with.

4 - Washington Redskins - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame (M, E, W, D)

 The real issue at hand here is Jason Campbell.  If Washington is going to stick with him (or at least give him another year), then the pick is Russell Okung (OT, Oklahoma St.)  If not, then Clausen is their QotF for Shanahan, Snyder and every bar in the D.C. area.

PotN (Hogs Haven): Campbell may be the elephant in the room, but that's about all they agree about over at HH.

5 - Kansas City Chiefs - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma St. (M, E, W, D)

  Still between Okung and Berry for me, and stlil a tough call.  So why would I change it now?

PotN (Arrowhead Pride): The Pride seem to be torn too, and for good reason.  It's a hell of a pair to choose between.

6 - Seattle Seahawks - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee (M, E, W, D)

  Whoever's left out of Bradford, Clausen, Okung and Berry goes here.

PotN (Field Gulls): FG isn't incredibly draft-heavy, but that's fine.  SBN has all kinds of communities and FG is a great one (which hurts me, because it's the funking Seahawks of all teams).  John is great at analyzing gameplay, like breaking down Lamarr Houston (DT, Texas).

7 - Cleveland Browns - Joe Haden, CB, Florida (M, E, W)

  The value of most combine performances in terms of prospect evaluation is often overstated.  Haden's is a great example.  He's still the best CB prospect, he still makes sense, and he's still of accurate value for the 7th pick.  that being said, I could see C.J. Spiller (RB, Clemson) if the brass isn't convinced that Jerome Harrison can be their every day RB.  Rolando McClain (MLB, Alabama) has an outside shot too.

PotN (Dawgs by Nature): If Berry happens to fall here, the Browns will be quite happy.

8 - Oakland Raiders - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland (M, E, W)

  Yet again, asked to mock the impossible.  Campbell's a beast, so he makes sense.  So does McClain.  Honestly, I don't know what happens here.

PotN (Silver and Black Pride): Unlocking Al Davis' head, aka the Rosetta Stone, part I.  I don't feel like I know anything more about him after reading it, but it was as enjoyable as reading can possible be when the subject is Al Davis.

9 - Buffalo Bills - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers (M, E, W)

  Last time I went power, this time potential.  Still a tough call between Davis and Trent Williams (OT, Oklahoma), but i feel the winds of change in my hair.  Kiper?  His hair's windproof.  And changeproof.  And nukeproof.

PotN (Buffalo Rumblings): A solid first rounder from BR's head honcho takes Williams, Dan-type (DT, Tennessee).  Such is life.

10 - Jacksonville Jaguars - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech (M, E, W)

  I still like this pick, though some might point to Jason Pierre-Paul (DE, S. Florida) if the Jags go DE.

PotN (Big Cat Country): River City Rage, Mr. BCC himself, agrees; the CW? Yikes...

11 - Denver Broncos (via Chicago) - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma St. (M, E, W)

  It's still a nice fit here.  Especially if the Broncos get Deion in a package deal.

PotN (Mile High Report): "Must-read" is an overused term.  This is a must-read for Rams fans right about now.

12 - Miami Dolphins - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee (M, W)

  Dansby filled a need at ILB, so I doubt they'd grab Rolando McClain who I had here last time.  He recently revealed he has Crohn's disease, which isn't a huge deal, but obviously a concern FWIW.  With Ro-Mack out of contention Miami can focus on adding a NT of the future to anchor their 3-4, which gives them three options: Dan Williams, Terrence Cody (NT, Alabama), and Cam Thomas (NT, N. Carolina).  Cody would be a crazy pick, and Parcells is too smart for that, so Williams is the front runner, though Sergio Kindle (DE/OLB, Texas) is a possibility.  Of course if Dez Bryant falls, he's definitely a player here too.

PotN (The Phinsider): Dez is a bit of a consensus-splitter.  "Watch what  I tell you."  Great quote.

13 - San Francisco 49ers - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma (M, E, W, D)

  Niners are in a strange spot here.  I still think the battle is between drafting a RT in Williams or a safety, where they'd have two options: Taylor Mays (S, USC) and Earl Thomas (S, Texas).  Honestly, this is one of those few mock spots where I can feel the media pulling the string above my shoulders.  While I still think Mays is Taylor-made (Hyuk, hyuk) for Singeltary's defense, the Niners would bolster their Coffee-Gore (which I believe is now an accepted film genre) powered running game with a mauling RT.  Phil Loadholt, Oklahoma's RT gift to the NFL last year, laid out the blueprint for T-Will.  Also, this is where the notorious Williams Effect comes into play in the 2010 draft, where teams begin selecting guys with the last name Williams.  Seattle will be on the clock next, and all eyes will undoubtedly be on Purdue safety Torii Williams......

PotN (Niners Nation): T-Will's the focus in this installment of Drew K's 100 in 100 series.  A+ scouting work.

14 - Seahawks (via Denver) - Everson Griffen, DE, USC (M, E, W, D)

  Tough pick.  With Bruce Campbell off the board, Seattle has two options at OTs: Bryan Bulaga (OT, Iowa) and Charles Brown (OT, USC).  They could go for C.J. Spiller too.  And even at DE, they may be enticed by JPP or Dunlap.   I think Griffen gives them a tenacity they need at DE that they won't get from Dunlap or Pierre-Paul.  Pete Carroll's history with the USC prospects has to figure in at some point.

15 - New York Giants - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama (M, E, W)

  The Giants could be serious trade players on draft day if McClain has a taker before 15.  He's a BPA candidate at, arguably, their biggest position of need.

PotN (Big Blue View): "McClain at #15 is about as big a no-brainer as the Giants will have faced in years."  Why argue?

16 - Tennessee Titans - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida (M, E, W)

  With Will Witherspoon on board, taking an OLB here is not happening.  Wlil they look outside their needs at DE and CB?  I doubt it, even though safety's in play.  Pierre-Paul is a high-potential DE that could flourish in Kyle Vanden Bosch's old spot.  And just to stand my ground, I'm really worried about JPP at the NFL.  I'm not the only one, FWIW.

PotN (Music City Miracles): Tread lightly when MCM debates; here, they talk about CB prospects.

17 - 49ers (via Carolina) - Taylor Mays, S, USC (E, W, D)

  Last time I had Kindle here, but it's one of those moves that makes football sense but not business sense.  The Niners have Parys Haralson on board through 2013 anyway.  I think the best pick here would be a ballsy one and a bit of a stretch, but along with Trent Williams at 13 would immediately upgrade their offense: Mike Iupati (OG, Idaho).  I just can't mock both 1st rounders on offense to Mike Singletary, and I still can't imagine he's not hungry to add an athlete like Taylor Mays to his defense.

18 - Pittsburgh Steelers - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa (M, E, W)

  Definite winner for the curtain.  Great value in a finished prospect who feels a need of serious immediacy.  As for immediacy an seriousness, check the pulse...

PotN (Behind the Steel Curtain): Oh, Ben.  You are a character.  From my POV, I wonder how it will affect the draft, league-wide.  For Steeler fans, it's obviously much more.

19 - Atlanta Falcons - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida (M, E, W)

  Risk?  Sure.  It's half the equation.  But the Falcons need more from their pass rush than what Jamaal Anderson has been giving them, whether he ends up at DT or not.  Taking Dunlap at least gives them a real shot at the other half: the reward.

PotN (The Falcoholic): What's in a coin flip? Not a hell of a lot, but it doesn't need to be a lot - just enough.

20 - Houston Texans - CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson (M, E, W, D)

  Passing game?  Check.  Running game?  Hello?  Bueller?  Something is wrong when ESPN's depth chart has your kicker as your starting RB.  And no, that's not Photoshopped.

PotN (Battle Red Blog): BRB yaks draft and RBs, but doesn't bring up Spiller.  Wait, ESPN mock drafter rules: never make yourself look wrong.  Defend your mocks until death.  Point to others lookback mocks, but never offer your own.  Now with my reputation intact, I can continue.

21 - Cincinnati Bengals - Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois (M, E, W, D)

  I still like WR here, but I think Benn fits their system opposite Señor Cinco.  And while TE and G may be greater needs, I don't know if a team is willing to overlook the injury history and spend a pick this early on Jermaine Gresham (TE, Oklahoma).  And taking a G this high up in the 1st is tough, even if it is Iupati.  The question for me is if the FO can go BPA here, or if they find a way to move down and hit their needs for value.

PotN (Cincy Jungle): The Jungle wonders if Antonio Bryant brings enough to the table so they can look to draft other positions.  Asking that question means the answer is no.

22 - New England Patriots - Sergio Kindle, DE/OLB, Texas (M, E, W)

  The Pats are always a tough mock; I could see them going a half dozen other ways.  Kindle would continue the youth movement at LB; with Adalius Thomas and Derrick Burgess holding down the spot, youth would seem a pressing need.

PotN (Pats Pulpit): PP looks at MTD's live mock that starts out with Kindle.  Seems like the base wants to address the D-line more than anything. You will...

23 - Green Bay Packers - Earl Thomas, S, Texas (M, E, W, D)

  I still think the Pack need to move up and grab a tackle or CJ Spiller, but if not, this is a very interesting pick.  They've got safety options, LB options, pass rush options, even Iupati.  These are the picks that define drafts not only for the team drafting, but those that come after.

PotN (Acme Packing Company): I'm confused.  The issue at S is big enough for someone to throw out the ridiculous idea of moving Al Harris back, but when APC talks mock, no mention of safety prospects. 

24 - Philadelphia Eagles - Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho (M, E, W, D)

  Iupati offers great interior line skill and experience, something the Eagles could use from this draft.  I could see them going after Markice Pouncey (C, Florida), but that would be a serious stretch at #24.  I could still see them going after who I mocked them for last time...

PotN (Bleeding Green Nation): At some point, the Eagles are going to have to beef up their LB corps.

25 - Baltimore Ravens - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise St. (M, E, W, D)

  The CW here is that the Ravens will look to find an heir to TE Todd Heap or add another WR to play understudy to Anquan Boldin and the underappreciated Derrick Mason, but the idea having Wilson replace Chris Carr (a fellow BSU alum) could do wonders for the Ravens' D who doesn't have much more time to give Ray Lewis and Ed Reed one last shot before the HoF.

PotN (Baltimore Beatdown): Always cements things when the SBN community agrees.  As an added note, I always enjoy it when other communities look at what we should do this offseason, although the idea of adding Vick and T.O. makes me queasauseous.  It's a combination of being both queasy and nauseous.

26 - Arizona Cardinals - Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU (M, E, W, D)

  A relatively easy mock.  The Cards could use some O-line help, but to avoid the kind of LB talent that will be here at 26 would be ridiculous.  They could grab a QB later on and possibly make a play for OT in the 2nd, but to take the field next season without adding LB talent on the inside and outside would handicap their 3-4.

PotN (Revenge of the Birds): Though there's not much consensus, the LB need is blatant when RotB yaks needs.

27 - Dallas Cowboys - Brandon Spikes, MLB, Florida (M, E, W)

   The Cowboys have a couple different options, but they're moving in the right direction this draft.  With Kyle Wilson gone, CB would be a stretch, though Patrick Robinson probably isn't out of the question.  Hard to argue against improving the OL either, but Charles Brown is not a Cowboys tackle.  Safety is a legit need, but with the top 3 gone, I'd be surprised if they jumped for Nate Allen (S, S. Florida ) or Chad Jones (S, LSU).  Pouncey would warrant a serious look, but I can already picture Spikes in a Cowboys uni, and he would give the Cowboys a youthful defensive cornerstone - something they're lacking identity-wise.

PotN (Blogging the Boys): BtB has been penning some great draft pieces.  I feel like linking one or two would be doing them injustice...but I'm going to do it anyway.  If you find yourself with a couple minutes, though, head over and peruse.  Now, with a clear conscience, let me botch this section.  People say stuff about cornerbacks, but hold your horses!  You might bust!

28 - San Diego Chargers - Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama (M, E, W, D)

  So much has been said about what Cody doesn't do, it seems like people forget what he does do.  And whether or not Jamal Williams comes back, Cody is an immediate plug-and-play NT that makes any 3-4 better on 1st and 2nd downs, if nothing else.  To play my own devil's advo, they've got other solid options at NT.

PotN (Bolts from the Blue): BftB drops a 1st round in which the Chargers go RB, specifically with Ryan Mathews (RB, Fresno St.).

29 - New York Jets - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame (M, E, W, D)

  From an almost completely impartial observer: the Jets need to add talent to their receiving game, or Mark Sanchez is going to make people cry.  And not because of his Fu Manchu...

PotN (Gang Green Nation): I'm with John B -- the LT addition is a no go.

30 - Minnesota Vikings - Markice Pouncey, C, Florida (M, E)

  At this point in the draft, it gets much tougher.  What needs does a team like Minnesota really have?  The chasm between teams like the Vikings and the Rams in terms of talent is ridiculous.  Last time, I went with a power DT (Dan Williams) to fill in for the Williamses in the near future.  I've flipped to the other side of the interior line; protecting Brett Favre for one (or more?) last run has to be the biggest priority for the Purple in 2010.

PotN (Daily Norseman): Yeah, they're not sure what to do either.  Envy.

31 - Indianapolis Colts - Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan (M, E, W, D)

  Robert Mathis is set to hit free agency after the 2011 season; bringing someone like Graham on now gives him time to learn on a curve opposite Freeney (who's not a FA until '13).

PotN (Stampede Blue): Happy 4th birthday to Stampede Blue.  That SBN communities are still growing is scary, but more than anything, motivating.

32 - New Orleans Saints - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri (M, E, W, D)

  This still fits need, value, and talent.  I know a lot of Rams fans were hoping this one would change.  Sorry.

PotN (Canal Street Chronicles): Scott Fujita is a good person.  Really, that's it.  No subtext, no "he was arrested for abusing his wife the next day", just a good guy doing a good thing.  I know, it's weird.  Let's move on.

Round 2

1 (33) - Rams - Brian Price, DT, UCLA (M, E, W)

  Will this be enough to soothe the Suh camp?  Probably not, but it'd be a hell of a plan B.

2 (34) - Lions - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida St. (M, E, W, D)

3 (35) - Bucs - Damian Williams, WR, USC (M, E, W)

4 (36) - Chiefs - Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech (M, E, W, D)

  A perfect foil for Jamaal Charles, and a great weapon to give Matt Cassel.  On the back of the Okung pick, Chiefs quickly putting together that includes more than Dwayne Bowe.

5 (37) - Redskins - Jahvid Best, RB, Cal (M, E, W)

6 (38) - Browns - Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno St. (E, W)

7 (39) - Raiders - Jared Odrick, DT, Penn St. (M, E, W, D)

8 (40) - Chargers (via Seattle) - Charles Brown, OT, USC (M, E, W, D)

9 (41) - Bills - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma (M, E, W, D)

  I woudn't be surprised to see Gresham fall to day 2.  With such a stacked first round, who's going to pull the trigger on an oft-injured TE who hasn't seen much game action in the last two calendar years?  And consider this one a bit biased; I mocked Brandon Pettigrew to the Bills non-stop last year, so the Bills-TE vibe is back in full swing.

10 (42) - Bucs (via Chicago) - Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss (M, E, W)

11 (43) - Dolphins - Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech (M, E, W)

12 (44) - Patriots (via Jacksonville) - Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse (M, E, D)

  A bit high for Jones?  Maybe, considering his injuries.  But putting Jones aside the recently resigned Wilfork after taking Kindle in the 1st and with two picks to come would be a great start to putting together a Patriotic defense for 2010.

13 (45) - Broncos - Vladimir Ducasse, OG, Massachusetts (M, E, D)

14 (46) - Giants - Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers (M, E, D)

15 (47) - Patriots (via Tennessee) - Rob Gronkowski, TE, Arizona (M, E)

16 (48) - Carolina Panthers - Navorro Bowman, OLB, Penn St. (M, E)

  Between the off-field reputation and the depth of other positions, Bowman drops pretty heavily; I doubt the Panthers will complain if they get this much talent with their first pick.

PotN (Cat Scratch Reader): The Reader's readers throw around options, and I agree WR makes sense; however, if Bowman does drop this far, I'd be shocked if the Panthers pass too.
