Why Not Colt McCoy?

A lot of the mock draft sites that I am following are saying that Sam Bradford will be the first overall pick going to the Rams and some of the sites are saying Arrelious Benn will be their pick in the second round. The Rams need to put out the vibe that one of the defensive tackles, either Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy is going to be there pick. If all the teams in the league know that the Rams are leaning towards drafting a quarterback with the first overall pick, the Rams are losing their leverage in being able to trade out of the first pick. If the Bucs went into the draft fearing that the Rams and Lions are taking the two big tackles off the board before there pick even comes up, they might be inclined to move down and kick down an extra draft pick to us.

I personally think that the Rams need to draft Suh with their first pick and then University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy with the first pick in the second round. This way, they get their franchise defensive lineman and their franchise quarterback. The word is that McCoy is too small to be an NFL quarterback. He is listed as 6-1 215 pounds. You all know how big Drew Brees is right? And he just won the Super Bowl. He is 6-0 210 pounds. Brees' college stats are comparable to McCoy's stats and out of all the quarterbacks that are elible to be drafted this year, McCoy is the most accurate with a 70% completion clip. Marc Bulger was in the low 50's in comparison.

I know Colt McCoy's shoulder is in question due to the injury he sustained in the championship game. But so is Sam Bradford's. If McCoy's shoulder checks out fine, why not add a jewel to both sides of the ball with the first two picks in the Rams' 2010 draft? That leaves us with 7 more picks to address outside linebacker, offensive line, tight end, backup running back and defensive end. Here's my updated mock draft:

1st Round    Ndamukong Suh

2nd Round   Colt McCoy

3rd Round    Joe McKnight (running back)

4th Round    T.J. Ward (safety)

5th Round    Colin Peek (tight end)

5th Round    CJ Wilson (defensive end)

6th Round    Roderick Muckelroy (outside linebacker)

7th Round    Chris Scott (offensive tackle)

7th Round     John Estes (center)

7th Round     Dexter Davis (outside linebacker)

Muckelroy

wont last that long and majority of colt mccoy’s passes were under 5 yards. i’ll wait to see his pro day results but i the scouts dont think he can make all the prostyle throws. I highly doubt the Front office will draft a QB if its not in the first round but if they do the only one i’d want is jarrett brown

no on colt mccoy

too fragile, doesnt have the arm to make all NFL type throws. shotgun offense. doesnt take hits (unless suh is after him) and not a natural thrower. i hoenstly dont like colt. he wasnt going to become a succesful qb so he should of went back in the BCS game. if won great qb for college ball. not the NFL, at best colt mccoy would be a solid backup.

Fragile??? Fragile???

Didn’t the kid play 4 straight years and become the most winningest QB in College HISTORY?
He takes hits really well. You are basing your arguement on 1 event. For the record…the majority of NFL throws are on short or intermediate routes.
Your only statement of merit was that you don’t like Colt.

really fragile

how is colt mccoy fragile… dude the rams want to draft bradford a guy hurt twice from the same injury in one year come SON lol. I like the article though good board but if i see weatherspoon available in the second round i am taking him. What happened to Dan theman Lefevour?

All I could hear was Mora when I read that headline Cali, heh heh

OP - where's the pro-Colt argument?

Not much supporting data, besides “let’s draft him.” Everything I’ve heard (away from here) is that he has a weaker arm than a typical NFL QB, but I’d love to hear the list of reasons why he’d be the next great Rams QB.

totally agree with suh in the first and mccoy in the second but...

i wouldn’t touch mcknight, i’m a socal holdover and pac 10 fan and mckninght is a REALLY poor man’s reggie bush at BEST. for running back i’d go mccluster is he’s still around in the third (i doubt it) or toby gerhart or blount from oregon.

Agred

Pac-10 fan here also. McKnight never lived up to his potential IMHO. McCluster would be a weapn as well as a ticket-seller.

AND WHY NOT PIKE OR ZACK ROBINSON AS FUTURE QB?

HERE’S MY MOCK DRAFT
1st Round DT Ndamukong Suh

2nd Round OLB Sean Weatherspoon or Jerry Hughes or Navorro Bowman

3rd Round QB Tony Pike OR TE Ed Dickson

4th Round OT Jared Veldheer

5th Round DE Brandon Lang or CJ Wilson

5th Round OG Shawn Lauvao

6th Round CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah or Jamar Wall

7th Round TE Nathan Overbay OR QB Zac Robinson
(it depends on 3rd. selection)

7th Round S Kendrick Lewis or Robert Johnson

7th Round CB Jorrick Calvin or Patrick Stoudamire

honestly

I’ve always liked Robinson a lot. He’s accurate and he has the body – I don’t know about the long throws. If the Rams drafted him late in the draft, I would be very happy

by riotmute on Mar 16, 2010 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Late Rounds

I think the Rams could definitely get an interesting project QB if they don’t go Bradford in the first. Robinson has been impressive, downside being though again he is a spread offense guy, but is more mobile than Bradford.

by kickasskeever on Mar 16, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind Robinson either....

…a lot of scouts and draft pundits are down on him but he looked impressive in the Senior Bowl. He almost seems written off to the point that he might be available as a free agent after the draft is all said and done. If we pass on a QB in the first three rounds I wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on him in the 6th or 7th round…

by NachoD on Mar 16, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Suh 1; then BPA

Don’t the Rams already have 2 project QB’s?

by rlf707 on Mar 16, 2010 12:58 PM CDT reply actions

I thought Null was the only project at this point

I guess it depends on when you think someone stops being a project and just is what he is.

I like it

Suh then Colt McCoy
next 3 best DE/TE/LB available

by Jas the Mace on Mar 17, 2010 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

McCoy, McCoy and McCoy..

..just realized. It’s a good possibility that the Rams could draft 3 McCoys in the first three rounds. Gerald McCoy (DT) in the first, Colt McCoy (QB) in the second and then Anthony McCoy (TE) in the third.

by NachoD on Mar 18, 2010 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

I think Bradford will have a good NFL career...

but I don’t think that will be with St. Louis. Bradford belongs on a team that loves to spread the field. The same applies to Colt McCoy. Teams like Seattle and Green Bay run spread offenses in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers was a spread offense QB in college and adapted very well in Green Bay largely because he was put in a good situation. I just don’t think Bradford will make a good transition to St. Louis’ run oriented offense.

I know Tony Pike played in a spread offense, but I truly feel he would be worth considering in the 3rd Round. If he doesn’t look like he’ll pan out, then there’s Ryan Mallet next year. Suh should be the first pick. Maybe Carlos Dunlap will fall into the 2nd Round as some “experts” think he will and will be another excellent addition to St. Louis’ defense. St. Louis’ DL could be rebuilt in one draft! Just a thought.

I'd take Clausen instead

by CoachConnors on Mar 19, 2010 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't tell if you are serious or just joking to try to get somebody worked up.

If we took Suh in the first round and Clausen was still there at the start of the second, I’d probably take him too (although I suspect there would be some teams on their knees pleading with us to take two or three of their draft picks off their hands so they could have him). I think he’s a competent QB, but definitely not top of the first round good.

by andyrose on Mar 19, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Of course I'm serious.

And why would anyone get worked up over it?
And Clausen won’t be there at the start of the 2nd, not a chance. You’ll see. Take a picture of this so we’ll know who was right.

In fact, if you are confident in what you’re saying, I’ll make you a wager right here in front of the world that Clausen will be gone by the 2nd round. C’mon, step up. I’ll send you my address and bet you a case of beer or something comparable.

I’m not sure what you’ve ben doing with your time, interviewing teams like the Seahawks, Redskins and Bills, but to say he’s not a first round talent is humorous. Saying his success in college was because of poor competition is even worse, it’s borderline ignorant of just exactly what the situation is.

Jeez, I go away for a few days and insanity reigns. Anyway — friendly wager — I hope you accept.

by CoachConnors on Mar 22, 2010 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions

What? Coach, come on.

I didn’t say he would still be there in the second round. The whole premise of jabooty’s post was what we would do about QB if the Rams took Suh first. I merely said if he was still there at the start of the second, and the Rams had taken Suh in the first, I would than be happy to see the Rams take Clausen. The point being I wouldn’t take him with the first pick in the first round because I don’t think he’s that good. Where in the world did you come up with me predicting he would fall to the second round?

by andyrose on Mar 22, 2010 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

Apologies - you said not "top" of the first round good

of all your words, I missed the qualifer.
