Being Billy D. How about rolling the dice???
A while back I proposed a situation where I thought we should consider drafting a QB with our 1st pick. Scenarios where we should draft a QB!
One of my proposed thoughts was wheeling a deal with Tampa. It has been a common thought and it keeps popping up on post after post. It only seems like a logical event, however anyone who watches the NFL draft year after year knows logical doesn't always happen. So, I propose that Billy D. get a bit ballsy. We all know that the Rams drafting a QB talk has picked up steam in the media, just as 3k preemptively predicted(you bastard). The more I think about it, the more I see it as a logical decision. My hesitation has and always will be...how will Bradford do without that great offensive line he had in college, but more importantly how will that shoulder turn out? So this is what I porpose:
We know as of right now, due to sources close to the teams, that both Detroit and Tampa Bay have DT's on top of their board. Tampa Bay is said to have Mr. Suh looking down that list. It should be common sense that Detroit is in an advantageous position to make out with one of the two DTs that are highly coveted. With that said Tampa could very well be the odd man out of the DT sweepstakes... should the Rams decide SUH is in fact the best player available. This is where we get ballsy-
Draft Suh, no matter what! Then pull a San Diego Chargers move. We know Tampa Bay is extremely interested in the guy. We know with Suh gone that Detroit will more than likely go with McCoy. That leaves Tampa with Eric Berry, who I'm not sure they want to give 3rd overall money to (even though the kid is worth it). Then we dangle Suh to Tampa and see what they are willing to give up. Draft day is like drinking a 12 pack...people do things they may not normally do. We wheel and deal and see what more picks we can pick up. Tampa is in a position where having an extra early round pick(extra 2nd rounder), they may be willing to do some wheeling and dealing themselves. So, I say draft Suh and see just how bad Tampa wants him...a swap of 1st and their 2nd, or maybe the swap plus their 3rd. Either way we get our QB with 3 and hopefully pick up an extra pick. Hey, worst case scenario we end up with SUH. I can live with that risk.

Not a bad idea.
This is the first trade “possibility” that really makes the most sense. Unless, that is, the Devaney simply wants Bradford and isn’t willing to take any chances.
But, by drafting Suh, that would really put the clamps on Tampa. Intersting idea.
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.

What if
Washington (#4) or Seattle (#6) trades up with Detroit at #2 to get the QB? It seems a lot more likely that a team would trade up for a QB than a DT.
Or, does this scenario assume that it doesn’t matter which QB St. Louis gets—Bradford or Clausen—either one is fine if they pick up extra picks from the Suh trade?
Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...
Well
If Washington or Seattle decide they want Bradford enough to trade up to #2 then it looks like we get stuck with Gerald McCoy. Another decent consolation Prize, I’d say.
A trade idea
where we end up with Suh in the worst case… I like that !
Might even then trade the #3 to someone who wants Bradford or Clausen and get even more picks.
DT or QB
I see the Rams having the their top 4 as Suh, McCoy, Bradford, Clausen. I don’t see Rams taking Bradford, McCoy or Clausen unless they get players or picks. DT makes Rams better next year. Do you think new owners are going to be happy with another year like 09?
The #1 overall pick in the draft makes
the Rams better than the year before! Whether it is a QB or a DT, it doesn’t matter -we were that bad last year.
Same pattern of wheeling and dealing...
1st/ Take Suh with the #1 and offer to Tampa for their #3 pick and more;
2nd/ Take Clausen or Bradford at #3 and offer him to team looking for a QB.
In fact, if we can guess right who the Skins want for QB, we could even ‘force’ them to sweep #3 and #4 by ‘threatening’ to take their chosen one.
My ideal scenario: We take Suh and send him to TBay for their #3 (and additional picks). On the clock at #3, we call the Skins and tell them that we’re going to take Clausen (if that’s the one they really seem to be in love with). The Skins can’t stand this idea and offer to swap #3 and #4 (and picks). At #4, with Bradford still on the board, we might make another trade with a team that wants the only remaining Top 4 prospect.
Ain’t that a wonderful plan ? :)
It’s highly improbable, but trading from #1 to #3, from #3 to #4 and then out of #4 would bring us a lot of valuable picks…
The worst case scenario in that
case would be the Rams ending up with Clausen…not a bad idea, but I’d rather have the worst case scenario turn out to be us ending up with Bradford. Meaning, if we guess wrong and Washington does not want to trade up because they actually like the QB who we didn’t draft, then we are happy with the guy that we draft at 3. This was also something I proposed in my post, early Feburary. Link a above.
I say we do what Skip Bayless says
and trade the #1 pick for McNabb!
Only five players have averaged 25 and 10 in their playoff careers. One of them, Dirk Nowitzki.
If the Skins don't bite
we could skip the #3 <→ #4 swap and see who desperately wants to draft either Bradford or Clausen.
This all sounds like one of those daydreams
that are fun to have, but very unlikely to happen in real life. If we believe Bradford is going to be our franchise QB, we need to take him. If not, we take Suh. I just don’t think anyone is going to trade up with us. Both Detroit and Tampa want to trade down, not up. They are in the same situation we are of needing more picks, not less.
