Billy Devany (Rams GM) Interview

I was just driving into work and I heard a short little interview with Bill Devany, the Rams General Manager, on Sirius NFL radio. I thought I would just post some of the things he mentioned for everyone's information. Nothing too groundbreaking or revealing, but a few interesting tidbits.

  • When asked what his reaction was to Kurt Warner retiring in Arizona, he said it was "Thank God!"...which, as the announcer pointed out, is what Kurt would probably say himself. He said it wasn't a slap in the face to Leinart, but he also said it does make you wonder if their success the last few years can continue without an all-pro like Kurt.
  • They asked about Bulger and our QB situation. Devany said that he is a "Bulger fan", but that Marc has been in a bad situation the last few years with a weak/injured O-line and not a lot of talent around him. Devany said that he feels like if Bulger has the right help around him, he has shown he can be successful. To follow up, he was asked if that meant we were sticking with Bulger. He said that it hadn't been decided and what they are doing is looking at free agents and seeing if any of the QBs in the draft are worth the #1 overall pick (to get a starter). He did mention that right now the QB free agent market is not looking all that great. He said that because you are looking for a starter, it would be difficult to find that in free agency. He didn't mention later round QBs.
  • Speaking of the #1 overall pick, Devany was asked about drafting a QB at that spot. He just said that you really need to make sure that this guy is going to be "the guy" for the franchise because of the money and expectations that go with that pick. He also said that we are considering a lot of positions in the draft because of all of our needs so we aren't forced into grabbing a QB.
  • When asked about the O-line he said that he feels like we are finally starting to get it solidified and that they guys we had before injuries were getting the job done. (I'm not sure if he was talking pre- or post-Incognito)
  • When asked about whether the Rams are looking at Suh, Devany said yes. He was asked if he thinks Suh can be a difference maker at the next level, and he said that he felt that he really would be. But he also said that you also need to look at McCoy out of Oklahoma. He said you need to ask, Is he as good as Suh? Is he not that far away in terms of talent? He said those are the kind of things you have to know if you decide to trade down, but want a DT.
  • When asked about trading down he said that he is always a proponent of that. He said that we have so many needs, that one guy at #1 overall is not going to instantly make us better. We need a lot of help and more picks is a good way to get it.
  • When asked about how tough the season was he said that it was pretty frustrating. He said that he and Spags would sit in the Coach's room and look at the 45-man game day roster and that 30 of the people on it were 6th round, 7th round, and undrafted players. He said that at times the coach's felt like they had one hand tied behind their back because we just didn't have enough talent some places.
  • When asked what his impression of Spags first year was he said that he was impressed with how he carried himself. He said that of course he got frustrated and was upset that we weren't winning, but he always kept a level head and didn't make any drastic changes. He said that they both believe in what they are doing and they just need to "stay the course".
  • When asked about the ownership situation he said that he describes it as "crowd noise". It is there, but it doesn't really impact what they are doing day to day as coaches.

That's all I remember off the top of my head. I wish I could link the audio, but I don't think it is anywhere on the web. Anyways, happy Friday everyone and enjoy the Superbowl.

Thanks for posting this.

Very interesting.

And good memory!

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Bulger!

Nice to know Devaney’s aware of the garbage around him. Doesn’t mean he’ll stick with him, but at least he won’t fault the guy completely as some do.

So does anyone know

if it is true that 30 of the 45 gameday roster spots were ever 6th, or 7th round picks or undrafted or did he make that up? I never would have guessed that there were so few higher picks on the active roster.

How could you not know?

You’ve been around here for awhile-You’ve read the posts——

Breakdown of roster by draft position

I looked at the roided out rosters posted by Mike Sando on ESPN. Here is the breakdown of the Rams 53 man active roster at year end.

1st round – 5
2nd round – 3
3rd round – 3
4th round – 5
5th round – 2
6th round – 4
7th round – 10
Undrafted – 21

For comparison purposes

Arizona breakdown
1st – 7
2nd – 6
3rd – 7
4th – 4
5th – 7
6th – 4
7th – 6
UD – 12

Thanks guys...

for posting those breakdowns. That is really interesting. It is such a shame that drafting has been so bad for the Rams. I think it is pretty obvious why the Rams have been in a downward spiral for the last few years. Poor drafting and not restocking ageing talent has been commonplace.

For the fans who think they know the quarterback situation

If you will pay close to this he’s stating that he feels he has a good quarterback but he just doesn’t know if he can keep him. This means people need to get off of Bulger’s back and pay attention to the crap for players he’s had around him.

by CGSuddeath on Feb 5, 2010 9:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Devany said if Bulger has the right help around him, he has shown he can be successful.

Wish I could have had follow up questions.

Specifically, how much of their problem do they assign the receivers, and how much to the O-line? Roethlisberger had success with a bad line, but he’s also got 3" and 30 lbs on Bulger.

For what it's worth

I don’t have much to do today, so thought I would ramble a little-or a lot-on impulse thoughts
The Steelers Bad Line was still better than our noodle soup line. When our line was hittin on all cylinders, Marc showed marked (pun) improvement. In fact, he really started coming on until the receivers forgot what their hands were for.

by Knoxfan on Feb 6, 2010 12:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Roethlisberger

And you see how the bad offensive line finally caught up to them.

by CGSuddeath on Feb 8, 2010 4:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Was Avery worth a high 2nd?

Is another follow up question I’d love to ask. If Bulger needs more talent around him. Is Avery what they thought, is he where they thought he’d be by now?

by CoachConnors on Feb 5, 2010 11:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

For what its worth 2

I’m not sure in my mind where to classify Avery. He was drafted to perform in a very narrow focus-that was to GO DEEP-GO FAST-DON’T CUT. Is he capable of doing that still? Yes. Is he used in that role? No. I can only grade him if he and DeShan were to trade places. Funny how that might play out-We might be yelling “we could have drafted Avery!”

by Knoxfan on Feb 6, 2010 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How do you know they had such a very limited use in mind for him?

Sauce please.

I have trouble with the idea of a guy with the skills to run skinny posts and catch the ball not being able to do other things. I believe if he’s that limited, it’s because he isn’t working on developing other things like he should be.

There’s a whole tree that a 1st or 2nd round guy needs to get a grip on, should already have a grip on, and most of it involves at least one cut. It’s basic, and it’s completely teachable.

by CoachConnors on Feb 6, 2010 3:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But he's not going anywhere

I’m sure Devaney and Spagnuolo have looked at Avery and thought about if he’s coming along like they want, right? Especially now that they have to decide if they need help in the draft.

Sounds like he’s already made the judgement that last year’s problems were more a case of needing more talent around Bulger, so I’m really intrested in what they think about Avery’s development.

by CoachConnors on Feb 6, 2010 12:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry. I thought you were saying

is he where they thought hed’ be by now when they drafted him.

by andyrose on Feb 6, 2010 2:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If I hear they're even hinting at disappointment with Avery

I will be sold on the idea they’re going after hands in the draft. They already let it be known they think they need more talent around Bulger.

Could have had DeSean Jackson.

On the court they call me The Cloud, because I make it rain. They also call me Money, because I drop dimes.

Right you are, and boy does that hurt

DeSean does an awful lot for the Eagles.

For what it's worth 3

Who drafted Avery isn’t important. How he is used is. Remember a few months back how we were yelling about Avery having to cut back to make his receptions? We all blamed Bulger’s weak arm. Now we know that the QB had to throw early. A fact born out by the backup QB’s.

by Knoxfan on Feb 6, 2010 12:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

looking at free agents and seeing if any of the QBs in the draft are worth the #1 pick

        I like how that sounds.

The quarterback free agent market is not looking all that great. Because you are looking for a starter, it would be difficult to find one in free agency.

I don’t like the sound of that. The rest of it sounds like we are all on the same wave length.

by dbcouver on Feb 6, 2010 7:06 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

For what it's worth 4

Here’s what I would wager a half full/half empty glass on—
1. There is a big push for a #1 QB draft (another rookie)
2. There is a big push to accept a FA QB with lesser stats
3. There is a big push to start another #1 IR candidate (Chad)(Bradford)etc..
4. There is a big push to ignore the two rookie QB’s we already have

Heh- I get your point.-BUT

Rocket Arm Reilly might be our man in 2010. Then again, he might bust, and be outta here. The WR and TE core will determine which.

Rocket-Arm Reilly??

Is that a legitimately earned nick because I admit I don’t know anything about this guy. But I already like him better than Null.

It's a gossip line-

A few months ago I posted some gossip from San Diego State squad and some of the guys knew and had worked with him. What I posted was the gossip that went “Reilly could knock the eyeball out of a running Chicken at 60 yards” and also how he he could laser-line a ball. I’ve never seen Reilly play, but I’d like to.
So—all I got is gossip, but he came loaded with awards and he’s the right size.

DeSean Jackson

is doing what we hoped Avery would do………they have the same build and speed, we just picked the wrong guy………..even if Philly has the better Oline, QB, and everything else………we just picked the wrong guy……..

About Reilly

Don’t take our word for it. ESPN analyst and former Philadelphia quarterback Ron Jaworski talks to Packer Report about new practice squad QB Mike Reilly and the player he replaced, Brian Brohm. Jaworski was high on Reilly before the draft and his opinion has not changed.

More Reilly

SEAHAWKS: Greg Knapp spending time with Central QB Mike Reilly
Written byAaron Weinberg at4:34 PM

According to a report by Eric Williams, Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp spent some quality time working with Central Washington QB Mike Reilly, giving him advice throughout his workout.

Reilly is having a phenomenal combine, recording top ten finishes in the 40-yard-dash (4.92) and the vertical jump (30.5), while moving up his stock to possibly a fourth round draft choice.

Reilly was dominant playing for Central Washington, breaking all kinds of school records including Jon Kitna’s passing yards mark.

I got a chance to watch a couple of Reilly’s games last season while writing for Western Athletics, one of which was at Qwest Field at the Battle in Seattle where he threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns in a 50-37 win.

Reilly didn’t throw too many deep balls, but was deadly accurate with short to intermediate passes. He was also a skilled scrambler, eluding rushing defenders and was always a rushing threat (second on the team with 415 rush yards in 2008). I wouldn’t have been surprised to see him run a sub 4.9 at the combine.
