Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"Here's to the future!"

Hey guys- I know we're all itching for the draft and free agency to get here, and the ennui is starting to set in- but I still can't help but find myself fantasizing about 2010 Opening Day.

I personally believe that our (limited) options, and moves in FA will dictate our draft strategy. If we stage a coup and land a guy like Kampman or trade for Osi- then I think we should go all offense in the early rounds (Bradford, Best, etc). If we get a serviceable QB or WR then go with D (Suh, Muckleroy). Anything could happen at this point, I suppose. Trades, trading down, weird combine drama...

So, I put it to you TSTers: I want to crank up the DeLorean and go into the future. I want to see predictions for Opening Day starters. Take into account any variable you want (trades, draft, injuries) and give me something to mull over in my excited brain. The only rule- if you get called out on it, be able to defend your picks. Who knows? Maybe someone will get it (close to) right, and the very least, we might be able to have a good laugh come August.

If you have a prediction on who might own our beloved Rams come fall, then feel free to throw that in for good measure.

Let's see some starting lineups!

*=drafted

QB: Bulger
RB: SJax
WR: Brandon Marshall, Laurent robinson, Donnie Avery
OL: J.Smith, J. Bell, J. Brown, Setterstorm, Barron
TE: Gresham*

DL: C. Long, Cliff Ryan, Jared Odrick*, John Fletcher*
LB: J. Laurinaitis, D. Vobora, Roderick Muckelroy*
DB: Atogwe, J. Butler, B. Fletcher, R. Bartell

We trade our 1st, 4th, and maybe a Dline for Brandon Marshall and their 1st. Draft goes something like this 1st-Gresham, 2nd-Jared Odrick, 3rd- Muckelroy, 5th-Fletcher and 6th/7th no one relevant. Gresham might be a reach here, but going QB would be stupid and I’m not sure if anyone else gives us better value. Probably locks us in for a 3 win season but it sounds like Devaney doesn’t mind Bulger.

i'll have

to watch some tape on this Gresham cat. Then I might drink your kool-aid.

I love

Gresham, but I really don’t know if we’ll be able trade out of #1. We’ll see. Definitely intriguing possibilities here. Odrick & J. Fletcher, especially.

Only two picks as starters??

Wonder who the backups would be? I’d imagine more help from the draft, thus my question on BU’s.

we only had 2 Draft Picks starting opening day 2009 (Lauranitis, Smith) although Fletcher, Scott and Gibson found their way into the lineup eventually. I like the Stefan Johnson pick (where’s he projected these days? 5-6?), although Best is the sexier choice to compliment Jackson.

Sounds like a lot to give up for an unproven QB, even though I’m kind of sold on the guy. Suh & Spikes sound good, but where are the offensive weapons? :)

Why is nobody mentioning Adam Goldberg on the OLine?

I think he is clearly better than either Setterstrom or Greco, whether they are playing guard or tackle.

Goldberg is def. more versatile

and worth his weight in gold as a backup, but Im not sure if he has more command on the OG position than the others.

2010 lineup

QB- Bulger, Null
WR- Robinson, Avery, Gibson
RB-SJ
TE- Fells
OL-Smith, Brown, Bell, Setterstrom, Barron
DL-Long, Carriker,Suh,Ryan
LB-JL, Vorba, 2nd rd draft (Spikes, Witherspoon?)
DB-OJ,Butler, Fletcher, Bartell

Most likely very few FA this year; hopefully, a Scheffler at TE can be added.
I think draft will go 1-Suh, 2-OLB, 3-OT, 4-RB, 5-WR;OLB/DL, 6-best of DB/DL/OLB 7-RB.

The future will look good,

once we get a good offensive and defensive line. No team can be good unless you have at least one line that can perform well and you won’t win a Super Bowl unless you got both. I don’t want to put Bradford or Clausen behind our current line only if our line gets upgraded. But if our line does get better then we should just stick with Bulger for another year, since we have seen what he can do when he’s got time.

I think we should take Suh and get another solid DE, like Osi or Kampman. Bring in that CFL guy to play linebacker, can’t be worse then what we got on the outside right now right? Secondary actually has some players in it, so I would leave that. Trading up from our second round pick to get Gresham to play TE would be nice, but if not, I would WR or outside linebacker. I really like Best, but I think taking Stefan Johnson in a late round would be a nice pick, remember he was the starting RB at USC over McKnight before he went down.

I got baseball, basketball, and football. Why do I need anything else in my life?
