I'm sure they are eyeballling him
There is no doubt they are going to grab a RB now…if they want to win now, at least.

There are more RBs than just Best
who could step in and play from day 1. RB is the easiest position in football (other than kicker or punter) to transition to the NFL.
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

Of course there are...
…but they must have a plan if they let LT and Sproles go. Jahvid looks to be available after Spiller in round one, so that seems the obvious choice.
A lot of RB’s can play, but they need to pick someone!
Shonn Greene went in round 3 and he replaced Thomas Jones last season
you don’t need a 1st rounder to replace Sproles. LT wasn’t LT anymore, so it’s not like they must replace the NFL MVP either.

True
…but he replaced Thomas Jones. They had the luxury of having a back already on board – and they traded up to get to that spot.
The Chargers are in the 28th spot in the draft, so a third round RB for them would be quite a wait. Round 2 is possible, but they don’t have many holes to fill, so RB should be one of the priorities.
I’m sure the Chargers will sign a free agent, and use that to determine what round to draft a RB. If they pick up someone like Chestor Taylor for cheap, then they could wait for round 3 or so for a RB.
Sproles
would be a very nice FA signing for us. He could cover three positions (RB2/KR/PR) with one signing and it gives the Rams a greater opportunity to upgrade at QB, DE, DT, WR, and OLB with higher picks. I say go for it.
wow. that's kind of a surprise
you’d think they’d keep the guy to at least remain in his complementary role.

He would be an expensive choice
But yeah. It would be a great pairing.

Looks like the Rams aren't the only ones blowing smoke screens--
Sproles will magically stay in San Diego-
Expensive...but not as expensive as wearing SJ out
Could be cost effective in the long run. What a great 1-2 punch.

But why not pull someone on the cheap?

Lets face it
If you pick up a RB on the cheap and he does well, one year later he’ll hold out for a monster contract.

Depends on how much duty they envision him getting, and what level you want
Miami had what a lot of people thought were 2 feature backs. Just depends on what kind of role they see for him. I’d be ok with taking a healthy chunk of SJ’s away from him early in games (Q1, Q2) to preserve his health for the 4th quarter, and for the late season. Not most of his carries, but maybe half.
If you look at RB history, guys who gets lots of carries rarely are able to do so for consecutive years without breaking down. Smart organizations who have really ridden the horse try to throttle back a little the next year. As an example, I think the stat is RBs who lead the league in carries can’t repeat in consecutive years 90% of the time….I probably shouldn’t even write it without looking it up. (yes I know SJ didn’t lead the league in carries, Im just sayin, he was really used last year and has a bad back)
I think RBs are easier to come by, but also you get what you pay for if you go cheap. Just depends on what kind of role they see. I’d like to see Sproles get 30% of the carries, SJ 65% or more. Toss in a couple for QB or FB inside handoffs.

Easier to aquire because I think there isn't a shortage of theml
Not easier ro acquire because they will take Less money.. I think we have a couple of cheap backups already and I have serious doubts they could get the job done in extened action.
I’m seeing a few talented free agents they could easily.sign if they wanted to pay for that level of guy.

Sproles is proven, way beyond any of our backups
Good insurance isn’t always the cheapest. If SJ goes down, or herniates that disk, with the way the Rams lean on him it could be a guarantee of another 1-15 season if they don’t have someone more capable than Darby to take over.

All solid answers
I just lean on that one phrase from your previous comment:

If this indicates a trend......
It may have a positive affect on who becomes available via free agency. Players being released because of how much they are owed for their retention will, in effect, increase the ability to add talent via free agency. How ironic considering all the projected doom for the free agent market this off-season, up to this point
I don't get why they would not tender him
They could give him the minimum RFA tender and if someone else takes him you get a draft pick, if you don’t then you have a valuable back for a bargain price.
They'd have to pay him 110% of his previous salary if they tendered him
You can’t low-ball him. That’s why Atogwe will be so expensive to keep- He’ll be making nearly 7 million for the year, basically a franchise tag.
