Random Ramsdom: 2/22/2010
- Mike Sando throws out some options for the Rams at that all too familiar position everyone is talking about these days.
- There has been a lot of talk recently about a Bucs-Rams trade. Will at Ramsherd takes a look at it. Can it happen? Wishful thinking in my opinion, but apparently some people think differently.
- Speaking of that trade, Dan over at Mocking the draft has his own thoughts.
- Leonard Little: to keep or not to keep? The Rams will be deciding that in the near future...is it finally time for Chris Long to fulfill his destiny?
- Could Dexter McCluster be the speedy running back we need? Take a look at his scouting report.
As always, enjoy Monday!

really bad idea
am i the only one that thinks the current proposal by tampa is not a good deal at all. if this josh johnson was good, why was he not the starter. and a lousy 3rd rounder for the rights to draft Suh. if tampa wants Suh so bad they need to give up a couple of those 2nd rounders, johnson and 1st round switch, then maybe it would be okay. Otherwise i say we need to keep Suh and just start drafting the best player on the board from now on.

I absolutely agree with you.
The best thing that can happen for the Rams is for Suh to be lights out this week (which he probably will) to either leave the FO with NO DOUBT that Suh is the only option for the Rams this draft (as if there should be a doubt), or to leave every other team with no doubt that he’s worth an even better deal.
If Suh kills it from here till April (highly probable), we’ll get even better deals from teams. Hell, to show we’re not kidding, we should draft him and hold him as ransom for other teams to freak out, Eli Manning style. SuperBowl and all, I think the Chargers got a way better deal that day with Philip Rivers and eventually Shawne Merriman. I still hold that Suh should be the pick in almost any scenario.

I think the current rumours are just to set a floor on the trade
Right now we don’t know anything about any player’s combine performance but the Rams FO have already set a minimum requirement to get up to the 1st pick. Like you said if Suh kills it between now and the draft teams know where they have to start with their offers to come and get the pick from the Rams.
As to the current trade down rumours, if the Rams were to get the 3rd pick and a QB I think they would then look to trade down again with which ever team decides they really want Clausen or Bradford. There are too many holes in the Rams current roster to fill in one draft and having more picks in an apparently defensively deep draft can only speed up the rebuilding process.

Not a fan of this Tampa trade rumour at all
The Rams would be getting a real bum deal according to the trade chart too if they were to settle for a third and a switch of first round picks as these rumours suggest. Which is only one of the many MANY reasons why I hope this trade never materialises (which it won’t, all this stuff is just hot air and hearsay until after the combine/free agency have been and gone).
Also, a quick note on the back up QB being mentioned in the trade rumour: I’m based in the UK and was at the Bucs – Pats game at Wembley last year, and Josh Johnson was absolutely terrible! Single digit completions, 3 ints if i’m not mistaken. He eventually got pulled and was replaced by the new kid Freeman. I would really not be comfortable with the Rams considering him for our starting QB job.
I'm undecided on the trade right now
Like I said above I think the rumours are only putting a floor on the value the Rams would want. As for Josh Johnson I think would be a move to give the Rams three QBs with potential instead of just two. I don’t know if any of them can be a permanent solution but its better to have three guys who could be the answer than just the two.
That said I am not a huge believer in rigidly sticking to a draft value chart, I think the draftees vary too much year by year to have every pick with the same value each year. Also the size of the contracts for the top picks reduces their value, especially in a deep draft.

Draft Value
I think if Tampa want to think that Suh is their second coming of Warren Sapp then you at least wave the draft value chart under their noses to suggest he’s worth more than they’re rumoured to want to give us. Like you say, they’re just establishing a floor on the value but i’d like at least one of their seconds in the package too.
I’m also not so sure about how having Johnson on our team would help. I get what you’re saying about having potential and competition at the QB position, but I’m not too keen on the idea of a three way position battle at the QB spot when camp finally rolls around. What’s the saying, if you think you’ve got two quarterbacks you’ve really got none. It’s time for the Rams to find a guy and say, “son, this is your team.”
That's my early inclination as well
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

If you overuse him
Returns and a couple 2nd downs? I don’t see why he’d be any more injury prone than anyone else.

Yeppers!!!!! A foundation for the rights to draft SUH or Berry
Pfffft – Tampa….C’Mon Men!!!,
a lousy 3rd rounder is laughable to say the least. Further, if Rams are to “trade down”. It is only effective IF we trade down and get an impact player with the first selection Rams have. So, I can see no further than either a trade down with Seattle or S.F. 2 ones for 1st overall! Otherwise, no lower than 7-10 unless hella 2nds and 3rds are packaged.
The #1 overall pick this year has very high trade value when compared to say…..EVER!
Thus far, my mock draft for position NEED only is near perfectly illustrated; and, I can’t wait until after draft to compare. Heavy defense with a surprise offensive twist – either Okung, Bryant or, dare I say it, a qb.
If no trade downs – off memory:
1. Suh, Berry Okung, Bryant
2. Impact DE or Impact OLB
3. Impact DE or Impact OLB
4. DB
5. RT if no Okung in 1st or Trent Williams in 2nd (meaning DE or OLB here if T.W. in 2nd)
5. OLB or DE (If T.W. in 2nd, then D.T. or CB)
6. Fullback or TE
7. OG
7. RT
Weiss in K.C.
Clausen to back-up Cassel? Or. Matt Cassel gets traded?? Or, Clausen gets traded??
Buffalo looking for a Right Tackle!!!!!
what I'd like to see the rams do
I’m by no means an expert in terms of scouting NFL players, I’m just a very long caring ram fan. (35 plus years long) I would love seeing the rams draft Suh 1st pick, then maybe mccoy or next best qb, or sean w. lb with 2nd pick, then mccluster rb with 3rd pick , if he’s still there. he’s not an every down back but would be a very good change of pace back for jackson, also could be used in the backfield at the same time with jackson.,sending him out on pass routes. He’s got real good speed. small but fast. I comapre him to w. dunn. The rams would trade a later pick for vick or campbell, same money by letting bulger go. Also sign peppers if possible and save money letting little go. I know this is a lot of wishing, but this would greatly turn this team around, just like when the rams added faulk and warner. Just a life long ram’s fan wishing.
i agree i would be really happy with suh, weatherspoon, and mccluster in the first 3 rounds...
but the only question i have then is….do we move mccluster to kr and if so what do we do with amendola?
McCluster: he's downright skinny
Only 165 pounds…this makes me very concerned about durability at the pro level.
Maurice Jones-Drew is pretty damn fast, he weighs over 30 pounds more than McCluster. 30 pounds on a guy 5’8" is really a lot of muscle.
Darren Sproles is extremely quick and he’s a good 20 pounds heavier. 20 pounds is still a good portion of beef.
A lot of college stars are faster than their competition and don’t take that constant pounding, so the subject doesn’t present itself. But in the NFL he may find he doesn’t blow people away enough to escape all the severe hits.
Just my concern anyway. I know we need speed out of the backfield. I think this guy needs to add some weight. 165 pounds, man?
the trade
if it got the Rams another second round pick and moved down to 3rd overall, it’s worth it. the chance to pick up another piece of the puzzle in a deep second round this year can’t be passed up.

Stop with all this skinny crap
If McCluster can play, then that’s all that matters. I dont care if he was a midget and the football was half the size of him. If he can elude tacklers and score, then get him. You dont have to be 230+ to be a good running back (see: Chris Johnson). And to be perfectly honest you don’t need to be 200+ to be a good football player (see: Deshawn Jackson). He weighs a measley 170lbs and is better than all of our receivers combined.
On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.

Small and skinny has already cost us-
Even in training camp, Avery really got beatup to the point that he could only give 50% and 0% for a lot of last year. We need beef-IMO I would rather have a good player that can play every week than a super player who warms the IR bench. It’s a week in-weak out problem.
Why do you think DeSean isn't a full time RB?
Because he can;t take the pounding play in and play out at that position.
With Running Back, durability is an issue. Like it or not, this is not the NCAA level of competition and the hits are faster, harder, and injuries and more prevalent in the NFL than in college. Its a step up and has to be considered.
Why do you think they have trainers? Why do you think they have strength and conditioning training? The simple fact is strong muscles helps keep joints from twisting and ligaments from tearing. Its not my opinion, its a fact. If you don’t think smaller muscles are a risk for a position that takes a pounding on a play by play basis, not once in a while reverse or return like Desean.
“Small” isn’t the problem, short isn’t a problem, but whether or not he has the strength to be durable is for a RB is. Not really for WR or DB, but RB yes, I think is absolutely something they will consider.
And why do you think all this projection of guys going from college to the pro’s goes on? Because there will be hits and misses when they make the jump tot he pro’s. You have to look ahead and potential problem areas, that’s what it’s all about.

Muscle mass and muscle strength are two different things
I’m not saying he is too skinny and I’m not saying the opposite.
But strength isn’t measured in size.
The House of Spears reigns supreme
Yes, I know
But he’s a human not an ant. He’s only going to be so strong at 165.

From Sports Publications 2005
In part, it relates-
Another position where size has not mattered much is wide receiver. Consider the following playmakers, again with caveat that none is as big as listed: the Indianapolis Colts’ Marvin Harrison (6’0", 175); the Carolina Panthers’ Steve Smith (5’9", 185): the New York Jets" Santana Moss (5’10", 185); the Chiefs’ Dante Hall (5’8", 187); the New England Patriots’ Deion Branch (5’9", 193); the Chargers’ Tim Dwight (5’8", 180); and the Dallas Cowboys’ Dedric Ward, who has squeezed out an eight-year existence as a No. 3 receiver at 5’9", 185.
As you guys say-he needs to pack on 20 pounds of muscle, and he might be a real steal.
Sign Little, trade him for Josh Johnson
Its so easy. The Bucs are desperate for D line help, pass rushers especially. Josh Johnson is only a back up anyway, and Little is done with his contract here.
