Do we really need a new wide reciever?

It seemed that the wide receiver position was a revolving door for the 2009 season. Lot's of players got a chance to step up and show their mettle. I actually thought that Ronald Curry looked impressive in preseason before the Rams cut him. The starters were supposed to be Donnie Avery and Laurent Robinson. Robinson was actually starting to come on before his injury. Keenan Burton was supposed to step it up for his second season before he got hurt. Then we brought in Brandon Gibson and Danny Amendola who had their moments. Is there a need to bring in more talent at the position or should we address the other positions of need and let the receivers that are on board now grow into their positions?

If we go

QB in the first i would go with Damian Williams in the 2nd but if we decide to go with Suh i would go OLB or Oline in the 2nd

I don't think we need a WR

But I am in the minority on that.

I know that it takes Wides a couple of years before you know what you have.
I know that all of our top Wides missed a lot of games with injuries or not even being on our roster, further clouding their value.
I know that a good O-Line and QB will improve the Wides production significantly.

I don’t know that we need to draft a Wide with a high pick

i don't think we need a WR in this year's draft

for the rookie WR to be good enough to contribute immediately, he needs to be a 1-2 rounder. If we take one in the later rounds as more of a project type player, it is a luxury we cannot afford.

Gibson and Ammendola didn’t even go through training camp with us. Give them a full off season to work with the system. Remember that Shurmur may not have been able to employ his full arsenal this year because we basically had a WR by committee thing going on. Robinson is coming back too. I would be shocked if we drafted a WR this year.

I agree

we have talent we just need them healthy. If anything, a true #1 WR VET could help if this price was right. I don’t think Robinson may not last, he’s had a career filled w/injury. Reminds me of Carriker.

Curry

Ron Curry was/is still suffering the effects of multiple torn Achilles tendons and was not commited enough to the rehab required to remain at the NFL level. He couldn’t get open. His career ended.

I agree

But what I do think is a good idea would be to go and grab Stallworth with an incentive-laden contract. He’s fast and would be a solid veteran on the field. And he’d do the incentive based contract. He needs a chance and would provide the rams with an inexpensive vet who could play. The commish has had him reinstated so it wouldnt be a problem to get him, imo.

A word of caution on Stallworth

Stallworth is also very injury prone on his hamstrings. He has missed a ton ofgames in the last couple of playing years. Incentive laden contract means not overpaying for him, but with a guy who is injured a lot it does mean he’s taking up a roster spot.

Is taking up a roster spot that big a deal?
Last year the Rams were not dressing a few guys that you might think they would really want to have in uniform…like Null, like Greco, an occasional Wide, couple more guys I can’t remember their names but surprised me they didn’t have room to dress them.

I’m not anti-Stallworth, he went to high school locally and I wish him the best. But I think last season showed me that every spot really counts. Stallworth’s body is decidedly not durable.

I agree with no need to draft a WR

The Rams roster is filled with young wideouts and I do not think bringing in another young body this year will be that helpful. Dez Bryant to me is the only WR that could vastly upgrade our team THIS year just because he is that gifted and elevates the play of others. There are some other good WRs but I think they all have too many areas to improve on to succeed immediately on our team with out lack of #1 WR talent.

WIth that being said, I am fine with the team taking a flyer on a guy in the 6th or 7th round if he is the best player on the board just to bring some competition to the position. I also would not complain about McCluster in the 3rd round just because of his versatility and playmaking skills but he is not a true WR and would add carries at the RB position. With Spags tendency to only dress 4 wideouts I like the idea of versatile players at RB like McCluster and TEs that can split out wide like Gresham (if he slipped to 2nd) and Dickson (if he is around in the 5th).

If the team wants to upgrade the receiving corps I believe they need to look at bringing in an established veteran to assist in the development of the young players. A difficult task given this uncapped year as the pool is shallow. I will not be surprised if this is a very quiet position for the Rams this offseason as I think they will wait to see what they have on the roster with people healthy. Robinson and Foster deserve a shot to prove themselves when healthy, Burton should be competing for a roster spot, Kent is an intriguing prospect and good special teams player, and Gibson should only improve with a full camp. I also think Avery will have a better season just having gained some experience and getting some healthy counterparts around him.

good point

about mccluster. I never thought about it like that

I would go third round,

assuming Weatherspoon is taken with our second round pick. If he’s gone, then take Tate.

I got baseball, basketball, and football. Why do I need anything else in my life?

I'd like Thomas

But not until the 5th round. He may fall that far. Reach for no one this year. I’d like to see Suh, OLB DE or OL, Dickson, Thomas, O-line depth, Jarrett Brown or Alteraun Verner, DE or O-line depth.

Agreed no WR in this draft

If no WR is picked up in FA, which I think is a good possibility then we just need to let these guys play. I’m not giving up on any of them just yet. Though if Burton does not show up this year he would be the first in my opinion. Robinson,Avery,Gibson,Burton,Foster and Amendola. These six guys either get hurt and haven’t played much. I cant see how to get rid of any of these guys for a pick of a WR in this years draft. I would be fine with Amendola just on special teams. Bryant would be the only choice, which will not happen of course. We need a monster, not another small Avery. I’m more looking forward to see more of Burton, Foster, and Gibson next year and then decide on how to address our WR core in next years draft. We might as well just draft the best WR who can catch a 3 yard passes, no need to see any catches at the combine over 10 yards.

Just Sayn

that the Rams should’ve drafted Desean Jackson all along. Who cares about some one’s attitude. I wanted Jackson on draft day and I knew we just missed out on a star. Sometimes you just have to draft the better player, in this case we took Donnie Avery over Desean Jackson…

Hey Nacho

         How about OLB next??

by dbcouver on Feb 10, 2010 7:01 PM CST reply actions

WR in 5th rd ?

I agree with dbcouver, Suh, OLB/DE, OL, then you look at RB, WR, depth; take best prospect with tie breaker being need.

Something solid

I don’t think we should necessarily draft a WR, however I think we should keep eyes peeled for someone solid who becomes available through free agency or through a trade. Avery, Burton, Gibson and Amendola look ok and even have had some shining moments, but have also shown that they’re not up to staying healthy for long.

by Brawnwitch on Feb 11, 2010 1:38 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn't waste a pick

I must be in the minority, I wouldn’t even consider the idea of drafting a WR with the picks the rams have. I actually think the group the Rams have is pretty solid, maybe no stars, but overall a really solid group. I like Robinson to be the number one and I think a full healthy year the guy could have a really successful season. Gibson has shown some promise as a number two guy and Avery has the speed to be used in special packages and as a slot. Stallworth should be considered but I’m not sure if it should be the Rams number one priority.
