McCoy vs. Suh (What am I missing?)


All of this Gerald McCoy talk got me thinking. I went to look up their stats to compare and here is what I found:

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 297 lbs

Year: Junior

So what am I missing? How does McCoy even compare to Suh? They are roughly the exact same size and for comparison, this year Suh beat McCoy in every measureable stat. For 2009 Suh is:

 

+50 in tackles, +22 solo tackles, +28 assisted tackles, +6 sacks, and +1 in interceptions.

 

Or if you want to argue that McCoy is a rawer talent b/c he is a junior you can compare Suh's junior year (2008) vs. McCoy's (2009). Suh is:

 

+44 in tackles, +14 solo tackles, +30 assisted tackles, +1 sacks, and +2 in interceptions.

 

I know that stats aren't everything, but I think it is pretty clear that Suh's stats blow McCoy's out of the water in about every respect. I realize that McCoy missed one game in 2009, but unless he was planning on having a 40 tackle game, I'm pretty sure it is safe to say that Suh had better stats (not to mention stayed healthy all year).

Let's look at a few of their common opponents and see how they faired. 

 

  • Baylor: 
    • Suh - 5 total tackles (3 solo, 2 assisted) and 1 sack
    • McCoy - 2 total tackles (2 solo) and 1 sack

  • Texas: 
    • Suh - 12 total tackles (10 solo, 2 assisted) and 4 sacks
    • McCoy - 3 total tackles (3 solo, 1 assisted) and 1 sack

  • Kansas: 
    • Suh - 3 total tackles (2 solo, 1 assisted) and 0 sacks
    • McCoy - 4 total tackles (3 solo, 1 assisted) and 0 sacks

  • Kansas State: 
    • Suh - 9 total tackles (4 solo, 5 assisted) and 1 sack
    • McCoy - 1 total tackles (1 solo) and 0 sacks

  • Texas Tech: 
    • Suh - 4 total tackles (4 solo) and 0 sacks
    • McCoy - 2 total tackles (2 solo) and 1 sack

In the end, Suh's stats are pretty mindblowing. That is ridiculous consistency from 2008-2009, not to mention incredible stats.

I am not a big college football fan at all. I will admit that I have never even seen McCoy play a game and that I am usually against just judging by stats, but seriously...what am I missing here? Does it have something to do with scheme? I think Suh was double teamed all year, so it isn't like they found a scheme to inflate his numbers. I need help understanding!

Can someone please explain how McCoy could ever be picked over Suh?
