My case for Justin Blackmon for our 1st round pick in 2011, and other draft tidbits

So only two days away from the biggest game the Rams have played in quite awhile, and I am trying to pass the time, so I am thinking of who the Rams should take with their first couple of picks in the 2011 draft, specifically their 1st pick.

First let's look at our biggest needs, in my opinion.

1. WR

2.OLB

3.OG

Those are honestly, the holes we absolutely need. Other areas we can add depth to include: RB, CB, DT,DE,S

A speedy RB that can change up the pace to SJ39 is at the top of my wish list. Also, I would LOVE to add a safety that we can groom to play alongside Otowge. Obviously, I feel like these are back end round picks, so let's get to my case for our top picks.

Justin Blackmon

6'1 205 WR Oklahoma State

Redshirt Sophomore

2010 STATS
RECEPTIONS YARDS TOUCHDOWNS
111 1,782 20

Yeah, that is quite the 2010 year. Here is a highlight video against arguably the top corner in college football.

Blackmon Vs. Prince

Gotta love that highlight right there. He did a little bit of everything which included Catching different ways(coming back to the ball, going up and getting it), he blocked, and was a decoy. He has good size and resembles his counter part from last year in Dez Bryant. The thing I like most about him is that he is a passionate guy that wants to win and be great. I watched some of his interviews and he always is praising his teammates and coaches.

His 40 time is around the 4.5's but I have read on many sites that he plays so much faster than that, same with his size. He is a monster, but is pretty raw on route running and blocking, but that comes with experience. The guy can stretch the field just as good as anyone in the country, and the best part, he finishes his plays. He got Prince on a couple pass interference's and also caught a couple deep ones.

It's gonna be tough to get Blackmon I am afraid. He had a great bowl game, and I feel he will run a great 40 time to really wow some scouts. I think he will be a fast riser, but hopefully we can still get him.

Walter football has us taking:

1. Justin Blackmon

2. Mason Foster- Who had a GREAT bowl game last night with like 11 tackles and 2 sacks. The guy plays with some passion and eye black!

3. Blake Gideon- Don't know too much about him, but I would much rather have a guy like Demarco Murrary or Noel Devine

Thoughts?

and BTW, GO RAMS!

I would be very happy with Blackmon as the future go-to guy.

Michael Floyd might be a good backup plan if somebody snatches Blackmon up before us.

Honestly

I had never heard of Devine until another fan had me watch his highlight video yesterday…. I would love to see us get that kid in the 3rd/4th as our RB choice….. he was sooooooo fast. He has a completely different style than SJ which I always think is a good thing. I like Blackmon… but I have never seen the other guy…. Foster…. what is his deal (size, style etc)

by stlfan2004 on Dec 31, 2010 5:20 PM CST reply actions

He's primarily a ilb for UW

But projects well to OLB in the pros. I think he’s pretty much getting mocked to us by default because of our need for an OLB and there being slim pickins in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. I’m personally not that high on Foster in the second. Maybe the 3rd, but he’s not an ideal fit at Will and he’s small for Sam, although he’s closer to that role. He’s a good pass rusher on a bad defense so he stands out more than his talent dictates. At that pick I’d take Bruce Carter first, Travis Lewis second , and another position if both were gone.

by dbcouver on Dec 31, 2010 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

Bruce Carter

got picked up in that mock draft two slots ahead of us in the second, so we got Foster. I think Lewis was gone in the first.

I doubt Carter goes that high

I also like Tank Carder of TCU or Casey Matthews of UO. But not in the 2nd, again because they come from inside.

I bet Bruce Carter goes higher, actually.

I’d like a Casey Matthews too. I bet he can make the switch to weakside.

Yeah most mocks have him as an OLB.

Noel Devine and Joe McKnight were the 1 and 2

running backs coming out of high school, McKnight never really lived up to his status, but Devine, despite his small size, put up some monster numbers at West Virgnina. If he can run in the 4.3’s I would love to have him in a Rams uniform, he could be like Darren Sproles type player.

by TheSmart1 on Dec 31, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

I worry about picking these small, fast guys from college.

Spiller and Best, the top two last year, have done next to nothing this year in the pros. It’s a different ballgame in the NFL, and the small, fast guys seldom really make it.

by andyhawk on Jan 1, 2011 12:48 AM CST up reply actions

Spiller, maybe...

…but Best was putting up great numbers before he got injured. And he was injured for a lot of the year. Injuries is something else to consider for small shifty backs.

But we need one…in fact IMO, we have ZERO big play guys on offense. SJ is NOT a big play guy, he’s consistent and durable, which is also of value. We need some guys that can hit home runs. I like Blackmon in the first, as long as he runs a better 40 time than 4.5. That’s not first round material IMO. And he reminds me more of Andre Johnson than Dez Bryant cause he’s not as big as Dez. Anyhow, I’d like to see us take an OLB in the 2nd and a RB in the 3rd. Naturally, if somebody slips down to us in any round, we should be prepared to take the BPA. DL is also a need. And I’m not convinced that OG is a need. The absence of any big play guys allows the defense to load the box which makes it tough on the OL. That’s why I think we could use big play guys…..and didn’t Billy D say that also?

by Pekka for Predator Pontiff on Jan 1, 2011 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

Actually Best's running numbers were never any good.

It was ignored though because of those touchdowns but he was still averaging 3.1 yards per carry in those first 3 games, even with the 4 rushing touchdowns.

I don't have the inclination to look up Best's stats...

Oh yeah he's definitely good in th open field.

He’s been really bad as a runner though

I'd much rather pick up Sproles.

Proven to be one of the top 3rd down backs in every aspect. We’ve pursued him once, who’s to say we won’t do it again?

Sproles is going to want some cash

He is going to want to be paid about 3/4 of what a starter gets paid because of what he does. I mean I would rather spend that cash on somebody else and draft Devine or Murray.

Sam Bradford

by Jombari on Dec 31, 2010 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I highly doubt Murray and Devine will turn out to be

nearly as good as Sproles in a 3rd down situation. That little dude is surprisingly good at blocking. I say Murray is the better runner in the NFL and Devine would be the better returner/ blocker. He’s a pretty good blocker, which is also surprising. But we have a RICH ass owner with so much cash to spend, Sproles would be very much worth it.

Also, not every speed back will hit like Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson, those guys are VERY rare. Best is horrible in the running game and Spiller has done next to nothing this year.

pick up sproles

I’d prefer a DE. Robert Quinn in particular and from what I heard of good kid who will dominate with long on the other side of him. As far as in Guard Rodney Hudson from florida state 4 year starter. Went under the radar because of the mess in Florida state. Alshon Jefferey is a sophmore I believe?

by rams3!!! on Dec 31, 2010 8:24 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Quinn is being talked about in the top 10, even top 5

and we will not be in the position to take him. Kind of what a fear from Blackmon in a couple months is that we will be out of position to take him.

Sam Bradford

by Jombari on Dec 31, 2010 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Trade up?

another thing the rams can do is trade down and grab more 2nd round picks. Adrian clayborn from Iowa had a down year. Had a monster orange bowl last year.

by rams3!!! on Jan 1, 2011 12:08 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

A lot of mock's are actually

saying Quinn might translate as a 3-4 OLB. I can see him as that, he’s pretty small for a defensive end. I want Bowers or that Purdue dude…Kerrigan?

Probably because he’s 6’5, but he’s got a DeMarcus ware type build.

I’d imagine everyone on that Texas defense had their stocks drop significantly because the offense couldn’t stay on the field. I wouldn’t mind Sam Acho in the 2nd and Blake Gideon in the 3rd, you know a lot of Mack Brown’s kids are quality people as well as good players.

He shouldn't

Understand 53 kids came out early last year and that was the biggest pull of UCM in draft history. Not that many will declare this year so I wouldn’t bet on anyone declaring that is on the fence. Annually there may be 4-6 that, when they declare, we wonder if it was a good idea. I guess suffice it to say, if they’re wondering whether or not they’re ready, they’re probably not.

With Will Muschamp gone,

he’d have to learn a new defense on an already weak-looking Texas squad. I’d leave if I were him and he’s probably thinking the same thing.

DraftTek has us taking...

OLB Bruce Carter in the first, WR Jonathon Baldwin in the 2nd, RB Ryan Williams in the third, safety Jeremy Kellem in the 4th and DE Andre Branch in the 5th. According to this same site, DeMarco Murray gets picked with the 109th pick. I think I would rather have him than Ryan Williams. I think taking the safety in the 4th round is a little early and we would be wise to choose someone else.

If we could get Baldwin in the 2nd round that would be fantastic, but the trick with those second and further round picks is that it gets much harder to guess what teams will do. And I could just not see a talent like Baldwin falling in the second. If we want a Grade A wide reciever I think we are going to have to get it in the first round!

idk bout Gideon but yea if murry or devine (i like murry better) were still there then we deff go that route….

Need to take a long hard look at how

Avery and Clayton are developing before we jump at a wideout in the draft. Free agency is a big draw for players out there looking for a team on the way to the playoffs next year(which we will). Better off with a proven player then a chance on another possible bust.

If Avery and Clayton are coming back strong or we get Rice or V-Jack

I like the draft to go:
Mike Pouncey – OG
Marvin Austin- DT
Noel Devine HB
Greg Little
WR

Perhaps and OLB in the third and a different speed back later like Derrick Locke or Quizz Rodgers.

I am all for that happening.

As much as I would like to have Blackmon, Rice/Jackson is what I really want. That would allow us to really draft not having to worry about a WR.

Rice/Alexander/Gibson/Amendola/(put 5th receiver here)

Thats what I want to see, and if Mike can play anywhere close to Maurkice then we would have an awesome young line.

We're never getting Marvis Austin,

not in a million years. He could be the classiest guy in the world but the fact that he’s NEVER played his hardest would keep him off this roster alone. Anyway, he’s got character issues too lol. Wouldn’t you rather try and grab Sproles through free agency instead of wasting a pick on a runningback? We have WAY too many holes to waste a perfectly good 3rd round pick on a 3rd down back.

BLACKMOND AND JONES WILL BE OFF THE BOARD AT 21ST PICK - WE ARE GOING TO WIN TOMMORROW.

We need to focus on if an OLB or DL will be on the board that is going to help us. I think that is what is going to happen. I like WR Broyles and Baldwin but not in the 1st, they will go early in the 2nd. Anyone know who the best 4-3 OLB are that are worthly of a 1st round pick? DL at our stop – ideally a DT would be better than DE but spags defenses rotates alot so best one is the way to go.

by BrettSpokane on Jan 1, 2011 11:48 PM CST reply actions

Bruce Carter and Lewis from Oklahoma

And I agree with you. Maybe we shouldn’t draft a WR and wait for Alshon Jefferey and trade up for him. Hopefully in 2 years we don’t have as many holes as we do now so, we can trade up for this kid.

by rams3!!! on Jan 2, 2011 3:26 AM CST up reply actions

I watched Lewis last night and was not impressed – lots of mocks show him end of 1st beginning of 2nd – saw him moving backwards and chasing to make tackles not getting off blocks. Bruce Carter is to big and slow for 4-3 OLB in my opinion. I asked about 4-3 OLB because the onces I have watched don’t look like a answer. I have not had a chance to watch Mason Foster – he might be a good one in the 2nd or 3rd.

Sorry scratch my comment about Carter - he is the one who had ACl surgery in December

Also, I believe that at least one of the top 4 WR will be available in the 20’s which includes AJ Green/Baldwin/Jones/Blackmon.

If Green Jones or Blackmon was available at 21 I would take them over any other player

I think Baldwin is a higher risk pick – he didn’t have a very good QB to work with but just seems a little stiff and not a great WR like the others.

Personally

If this FO managed to grab our WR and RB in free agency and then pulled a good OLB and run blocking OG out of the draft….. plus maybe a raw guy who will take some coaching to be mentored by Robinson in a later round…. I would be happy
