Alexander Resurgence?

4d17f4f7aada5

Chris Lee - St. Louis Post Dispatch

With all of the woes that the Rams have had at wide receiver this year,

rookie WR Danario Alexander's presence on the squad has generated much needed intrigue and discussion. For some he offers a glimmer of hope looking into the future and possibly a tandem to rookie QB Sam Bradford for years to come. For others, he is a role-player with potential upside that is still limited by inexperience and injury concerns. Regardless of which pool of thought that you fall into, it is undeniable that Alexander has contributed in several key games. Currently the question must be: where does Danario Alexander fit in with the future of the Rams?

Star-divide

After a quick start against San Diego,

Danario Alexander re-injured his knee in practice a few weeks later and seemed to be written out of the offensive play-calling for a few weeks. However, Alexander reminded us of his presence in the game against San Francisco with a spectacular 6 REC 99 YRD game. But after disappearing for so many weeks before the sudden success, some Rams fans, including me, are a bit skeptical. Was Alexander's game against the 49ers a fluke or is he for real?

Since I am an optimist, I'll offer some plays or notes that support the case the Alexander's game against the 49ers is for real:

  • On one of the Rams' possessions, Alexander caught 3 passes on 3 consecutive plays.
Spin: Perhaps this is a flash the type of possession receiver that we need. Of course, Amendola probably has the surest hands on the team, but Alexander has the body size and strength to fight off defenders in traffic. We need a big target like this. Matt Ryan's completions to reliable Roddy White during the Falcon's game kept drives going and made me drool.

  • Alexander caught a career long 46 yard pass from Bradford to set up a touchdown in the 4th quarter.
Spin: On this play, Alexander completely burned the defensive back that was covering him. Safety coverage was drawn to the other side of the field as Alexander ran open down the sideline. He has the speed to be a deep threat.

  • On the same play as above, Alexander realized that he was not downed by contact and walked into the endzone. This touchdown would later be overturned because the replay revealed that his heel went out of bounds.
Spin: Good awareness to realize that the whistle had not yet been blown and that he could still run. This isn't anything amazing, but its good for a rookie to have a head above the body.

  • Immediately before the above play, on a 2nd and 8, Bradford finds Danario Alexander for a short gain that is turned into 17 yards.
Spin: Other than perhaps Brandon Gibson, its rare to see a Rams receiver fight for some YAC. On this play, it looked like Alexander broke 3 tackles to get the first down. Any time that a receiver fights after the catch to keep the drive going, that is a good thing.

  • Late in the third quarter, Steven Jackson catches a short check down pass on second down while Bradford is pressured and is able to run for the first down. The play is reversed because of a offensive pass interference call on Alexander.
Spin: Personally, I thought that this call was horrible. Jackson had clearly caught the ball and was running before Alexander had started to impede the path of the cornerback. It was actually a good block and gave Jackson the space he needed to reach the first down. Good blocking, bad call.

  • One last stat that has nothing to do with the 49ers game. Alexander currently leads the Rams in AVG yards per catch with 17.2. This is 25th among all wide receivers this season, 13th among receivers with 10 or more catches, and 9th among all rookies. Much of the Rams' deep passing offense runs through Alexander. Two memorable long completions are the touchdown against San Diego and the 46 yarder against San Fran. The only other player on the Rams with a catch longer than 46 yards is Steven Jackson (who has a 49 yard catch).
Spin: Is Danario Alexander a deep threat?

That's all for now! Discuss, discuss, discuss!

I'm looking forward to DX and Sambo building a connection like Matty Ice and Roddy White

That one play on Monday night when White was lined up on the right and I beleive it was Tony Gonzales who was put in motion to the opposite side of the field. White made a quick step to freeze the corner and took the inside slant for one of the easiest touchdowns I’ve ever seen. I immediately envisioned DX in that position with Amendola going in motion to the other side.

Resurgence isn't the right word because he had never uh "surged" before

Resurgence is like what TO is doing this year

great post though

I agree.

I think personally to DX, this is a resurgence.

I take back my previous statement

of Alexander having a resurgance this season…..bad game for him and his “deep threat” title…He needs to prove he deserves to be in the up and up this offseason cuz there will be young athletic proven players to fill his spot…no more waiting for a potential player…we need stars now

We're speaking in different magnitudes

I’m only looking at the 49ers game relative to DX’s “surge” earlier in the season.
Obviously I’m not comparing him to T.O.’s career.

by Zoo on Dec 29, 2010 11:17 PM CST up reply actions

I like DX, just hope he stays injury free.

DX seems to have the desire to play; I remember cheering him on that 17 yrd gain. He really fought for those yards and it was good to see a physical WR on our squad. The more he is healthy and playing the better he will become, obviously. It does add some excitement for next season as for the WR we have on the team. Clayton & Avery are added to the mix of Amendola, DX, & Gibson. I don’t think any other WR we have will make the team next year.

As for this being a fluke, I doubt it. He’s still a rookie, one with more games missed than played so he is still learning. I think he is a viable #2 at this point in his career. I also believe we should position ourselves to take a top WR in the draft, but that is another subject entirely.

Good post and good points!

He was a beast in college

As a Mizzou fan, it’s nice to see Alexander get a chance with the Rams. Great hands, great speed, good size. I was surprised that nobody drafted him and hoped for the best with his knees.

THIS year's the year. I hope....

yeah that happens though

too much risk in wasting a draft pick….even though a bunch get wasted regardless.

Almost seems like we used our 4th round pick on him and brought in Mardy Gilyard as an undrafted free agent.

At least that what their performance reflects.

the guy is really young still, wasn't even here for training camp.

It might be early to judge, but obviously the injury history is a red flag while he has the physical tools.

The one obvious thing I've noticed

Is that he has put on significant mass. At Mizzou he was the easiest guy to spot on the field because he had that “tall and skinny” look, now he looks like a legitimately built NFL WR just a year later. Considering he made his mark in college much more on turning 5-15 yard passes into 40+ yarders (he had just a crazy ability for a WR to shed tackles), that lack of bulk was my biggest fear talent wise in his transition to the NFL.

It still blows my mind that he didn’t get drafted, I don’t care what his knee looked like, you can’t tell me that all 32 7th round picks were a better value than a guy who can do this shit. Dude is 6’5 and even after all the knee surgeries, he put up a 4.4s 40 time and a 41 inch vertical.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Dec 29, 2010 9:01 PM CST reply actions

It blows my mind that he wasn't the Biletnikoff Award winner.

How do you not give that guy the award? He had arguably one of the greatest seasons of all time as a receiver… He should have been a Heisman candidate too, oh well.

This is one of the best highlight videos I’ve seen, second time actually lol. Personally, I like every song in there but I like how the dude switched off to hear the commentator at the right times.

He got royally screwed on the Bullshittinkoff Award

They said that they couldn’t add SuperNario since he wasn’t on the list at the beginning of the year.

Just add it to the NEVER ending list of royal screw jobs MIZZOU has been a part of….

AGREE!!! 100%

I remember the first time I watched this highlight video my first reaction was 1. God this kid could be something special and 2. He needs to give the producer of this video a kiss because it is the best production I have ever seen in a college highlights video

About the best highlight video production...

I’m going to have to disagree.
Noel Devine has the best highlight video that I have ever seen.

He's a senior this year

but hasn’t had a good season due to an injury he sustained in the LSU game. A game they probably would have won had he not gotten hurt.

hmm....injury... bad season.... how bad is it

can we grab him in a lower round because of it because that freaking kid is like a flash of lighting when he finds a hole

by stlfan2004 on Dec 30, 2010 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Oh it's just a lingering toe injury.

Sure he’d have been fine if he actually rested but it’s his senior season, he played through it. He didn’t have his burst though playing through it.

You can see his considerable drop in production here.

I think McShay had him as like the #8 RB and ~100 overall.

If we make it to the playoffs we should be picking pretty late in the 3rd, so he wouldn’t be a terrible pick up at that point in the draft.

by TheBirds on Dec 30, 2010 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

this was really good too. I don’t wanna pick between the two.

You have to wonder how West Virginia’s season would have been had he not gotten hurt. I’d say 11-1 and probably would have beaten LSU too.

It seems unfair though since it looks professional…

I noticed the extra bulk last Sunday too.

If it doesn’t slow him down, it sure adds to the problems of the little DBs trying to tackle him. He really looked like a beast out there.

Also,

look at how huge his strides are! I love it.

Broncos game too.

This guy is the most talented receiver of the 2010 draft class and honestly, it’s only an if, but if he can stay healthy then he’ll prove it too.

Damn, he was a 2 star recruit too.

This guy has had an uphill battle his entire life. I really hope he has a great NFL career, even if it isn’t with the Rams. But it will be :)

ummmmm dez bryant?

you cant even begin to argue that one i love danario but really?

by zaviex on Dec 30, 2010 2:38 AM CST up reply actions

Alexander's draft class of WR's was pretty thin

Dez Bryant will be and already looks like the best WR to come out of this class. Mike Williams also looks like a star in Tampa.

Does anyone else see the TE’s of this class though? They are just busting through the door into the NFL, Tony Moeaki; Jimmy Graham; Rob Gronkowski; Jermaine Gresham; Aaron Hernandez.

by Zoo on Dec 30, 2010 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

Never really said what I was intending to say haha

I agree that saying Alexander is the best WR of his class is either an overstatement or wishful thinking.

by Zoo on Dec 30, 2010 10:40 AM CST up reply actions

Talent-wise there is no doubt he's up there with Dez and Mike Williams.

Injuries have held him back his whole collegiate career. This dude won the starting job over JEREMY MACLIN as a sophomore but again, got hurt. He IS as talented as any receiver in this class, he probably just won’t be able to live up to it, sadly.

Dez had the most successful quarterback in Oklahoma State history throwing to him. Danario had a first-year starter in Blaine Gabbert after 3 knee surgeries and had one of the greatest seasons for a wide receiver in college history.

I really like DX...

but he really scares me when it comes to ball security. The way he tends to carry the ball with one hand when he fights for a couple extra yards…

Healthy DX=Next Randy Moss without the problems

by InSpagsWeTrust on Dec 30, 2010 11:20 AM CST reply actions

but i still think we should get blackmon

after seeing him last night he is the type of receiver we need he fights for extra yards can be a deep threat healthly and did you see the grab he had in the corner of the endzone thats what we need for this offense

by irams28 on Dec 30, 2010 12:05 PM CST reply actions

Oh yeah

You can’t possibly count on Alexander as a cornerstone, and he’d have to put in 3 healthy years before you could even think of him as anything but an X-factor. There is a reason he wasn’t drafted (even if that still overrates the problem vs. the upside IMO). Blackmon, Jones or AJ Green would be money.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Dec 30, 2010 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

yep

plus imagine if you had Green/Blackmon on one side, Alexander on the other, Amedola in slot, and in a four reciever set lets not forget Clayton/Gibson…. someone would have to have the best end of single coverage and any could get the job done.

by stlfan2004 on Dec 30, 2010 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

That catch was sick.

I got a feeling that he might stay though. With Weeden coming back, they have a real shot at the Big 12 title next year.

I wouldn't necessarily say consistency.

I think he just needs to be used more, he even said he wants the training wheels taken off him now because in the other 4 games, he was hardly used.

Durability perhaps?

I think that his limited role this year is probably a good thing for him. He’ll probably get more reps after an offseason to bulk up and heal. (assuming he comes back next year)

by Zoo on Dec 30, 2010 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah it's actually the fear of it.

He wants to play more but our coaches are scared to give him more playing time, which is completely understandable. I think it’s a good thing too, though, this last game we might NEED to use him more :). Yeah, I’m thinking get up to 225-230 range this offseason to help his durability like most 6’5 receivers are.

I am not going to reveal how many times I have watched that 46 yard reception against the 9ers..

… apparently the 9ers didnt prepare for DX, that DB was looking into the backfield the whole time and didnt realize he got smoked!

All I want for Christmas is a Pete Carroll scowl on week 17!

by leadhead on Dec 30, 2010 8:13 PM CST reply actions

When I watch this guy on tape...

I see flashes of Randy Moss like ability, plus A LOT more strength. When it comes to WR’s, I’m usually right, and if he can pan out like Moss (Receiving ability of course) than we REALLY struck gold here. He’s just an athletic freak man. He’s strong, fast, and seems to have some damn good hands as well. That’s a deadly combination. Looks good to see him in a Rams uniform

by ramswo85 on Dec 31, 2010 2:47 AM CST reply actions

Conditioning

is going to be everything for this kid come the off season. I hope the staff at Rams Park will ensure his legs are strong and prepared. Knee injuries are like cracks in a glass. Once there is one there are bound to be more, unless of course your do some repair and maintenance. Maybe he could talk to Torry about his off season conditioning program. I really like this kid and so does Bradford it seems. I see Alexander being able to put up the same numbers as White, he seems to fight for yards every time and he rarely is matched on the long ball. Hopefully our GM will go into the draft looking for that late round slot guy to compliment Alexander. Yeah, I know we have Danny, but I see him being dangled as trade bait during the draft or later for a free agent deal. Just my 2.

They will notice and they will giggle.
