As much as Rams fans are commenting about the lack of pressure while Orton shredded us in the fourth quarter, I saw that we were a step away from taking him down just before he let go of the ball on a few occasions. Chris Long has become a beast and with James Hall, Fred Robbins, James Laurinaitis, OJ Atogwe, Ron Bartell and Bradley Fletcher on the same side of the ball, some of the pieces are in place for us to be a really good defense.
If you look at our defensive numbers we are right there in the top six in the NFC Conference in giving up 21 points per game. Giving up 34 to the Falcons and 33 to the Broncos the last two weeks didn't help those numbers. By giving up 103.4 rushing yards per game, that stat also puts us in the top six in the NFC. We are also third in the NFC in forced fumbles and tied for first with 31 sacks. With only 8 interceptions for the season and no interceptions returned for touchdowns we are at the bottom of the NFC. Yes, we do need to work on our secondary. Our DB's seem to have hands of stone and our lack of interceptions has kept us from pulling some of those close road losses.
I agree with Fred Robbins, James Hall and Nail Diggs getting up there in years, we need to look at replacements for them either through the draft or free agency next year. Hopefully George Selvie can pick up a couple of notches and become the pass rushing threat we would all like him to become. I am also not convinced with the play of our strong safeties. Imagine if we had an Adrian Wilson or Troy Polamalu type player roaming the middle of the field?
I am excited about the Rams prospects for winning the NFC West and possibly making the playoffs in a year where no one would have ever thought that we could even compete. But I am even more excited about the future knowing that we are just a couple of key ingredients away from becoming an elite team and a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
