The NFC is up for grabs this year. Every team has lost at least two games already. At 4-4 and only a half game out of first in the NFC West, all we have to do is rest and watch the Giants beat up the Seahawks next week and we will go into week 10 in first place by ourselves due to the fact that we currently have the tiebreaker over the Seahawks because we trounced them 20-3 earlier in the year. It has been proven that teams with a solid defense, ground game and special teams have the ingredients needed to win championships. Statistically we are right there among the NFC leaders in all those categories. Check it out, the numbers don't lie:
We are fifth in the NFC in rushing yards per game with 106.1 per game. We are sixth in the NFC in first downs per game with 19.5. We lead the NFC in third downs made with 50! Our passing game leaves a little to be desired as far as passing yards per game, pass completion percentage and yards per attempt. Although Sam Bradford ranks right up there with Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers in pass attempts and completions. I just wonder how much of a boost our passing game and overall offense will get with the addition of Randy Moss.
Defensively, we are third in the NFC by giving up only 17.6 points per game. We are 5th in the NFC in yards given up per game at 313.3. We are in the top four in the NFC in rushing yards given up per game with less than 100. Our pass defense numbers are middle of the pack at best. Only the Giants have forced more fumbles than us we are in the top four in the NFC in passes defensed and sacks.
In the special teams category we are top five in punting average, touchbacks and lead the league in punts dropped inside the 20. We are number two in field goals made and in the top four in kicking scoring.
This is why I say, if we can win the west and make the playoffs, we can compete with anyone! Now let's get Moss to make the extra difference and let's get to work Rams!
