Detroit - Trap Game?

I sure hope not. The Rams have amazed me so far this season. First by losing two games that we had won, and then by winning the next two against Mike Shanahan/Donovan McNabb and the despised Sh*thawks. That victory last Sunday was the most satisfying in years.

But, back to the topic. Detroit is ripe for a win. I've watched these guys play some. Aside from the Minnesota game, they could've won the other three (especially the Bears game). The Lions have let people jump them early and then fought valiantly to come back and make games close. We're going into their place and they're favored, although I'm not exactly sure why? As long as Spags and company keep reminding the players not to look past Detroit, we should be OK. I believe the Rams are the superior team. But sometimes when a team is riding a natural high they can get let down against the next opponent.  The Lions provide an excellent opportunity for the Rams to get to > .500 record.  With the combination of Sam and Sjax we should score points, hopefully TD's. And, I'll be the first to admit that our "No-Name" defense has astounded me thus far. We all figured JL, Long and Atogwe would play good, but I would have never believed guys like Robbins, Hall, Diggs, Vobora, Murphy, Gibson, etc. could have contributed so much. And, these guys would've won the Cards game for us except for the Ryan miscue of fumbling away a sure TD.

I expect to sit back Sunday and cautiously watch this game. I hope we establish the running game and grind out yard after yard. And pleae give Sam the chance to fling the ball 50 yards two or three times. I expect things to be close. Maybe 24-20, 21-17, etc.  And I sure wish Mike Vick was starting for the Eagles Sunday.  Go Rams!!!

Good post Chopper

I agree… this game does scare me a bit, just because Detroit is a hungry beast and realizes that this could be their chance to gain some momentum.

The advantage we have is their QB (Stafford hurt) likes to throw pics. I expect us to nab 2 turnovers.

If we do NOT get a turnover, this will be a close game. If we do nab those turnovers, we should win by 7-10 points.

Hill has 5 TDs, 7 picks in 3 1/2 games and Bradford has 6TDs, 6 picks in 4 games.

I think the quarterback position is pretty evenly matched wouldn’t you say? A career back-up and a rookie are about the same in my mind. I’d even give the edge to Hill because of Calvin Johnson.

From 0-16 to the Superbowl baby!

Last 2 games

3TD 2 INT (one was WR fault) and 2 Wins.

What is the stats on Hill when he won his games this year? I don’t have them in front of me… Also, Clayton is having a SOLID year.

he just compared sammy b to shaun hill.. wtf!!!! the only reason he has stats somewhat decent is because of calvin.. imagine if the rams had calvin johnson

Hard to call it a trap game

When the Rams aren’t even favored to win.

Won’t be next week either. I actually don’t remember the last game we were favored to win by Vegas.

I saw the Rams were favored vs. Seattle by 0.5 in some places

But I see your point.

It does have the smell of a trap game

we are all riding high off a 2 win streak. Just beat a good washington team and a division rival for the first time in a while and we see the 0-4 lions next on our hit list and think automatic win. But these lions are just like the rams 2 weeks ago. Better than advertised and very hungry for a W. However, I still like our chances. I think if spags reminds these guys every chance he gets that this is a good 0-4 team, we get the running game going and force turnovers while limiting our own(please no more ints following a TO bradford) we should take this game.

by Buck Nasty87 on Oct 8, 2010 9:16 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah I don't understand that.

I guess he gets overexcited about the good field position he gets in and tries to pull the trigger too fast lol. In college, those were touchdown passes, he’ll learn from them :)

he also had the two sailed balls. I think that’s just rookie adreniline pumping because it looks so easy of a play. That’s okay though, he is still playing Manning type ball for a rook.

by OakCityRam on Oct 9, 2010 7:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, or Yes. At least 2-3 times this year we've been inside the 5 yard line and were denied a score.

That should NOT happen to a team with SJax and Sam in the backfield. One time it was the fault of running Toasted twice for negative yards. Man I wish us instead of the Sh*thawks had grabbed up Marshawn Lynch….

by RamChop on Oct 8, 2010 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Spags & the 24 hour rule

I like Spags’ mentality with the 24 hour rule. I think it keeps his team focused. After 24 hours and film review forget the last game, and find ways to win the next game. It seems the players have bought into his system.

Whether we're underdogs or not, right now we're riding high off two wins and two close losses.

As opposed to last year at this time when we looked like a semi-pro team. These young guys are starting to think they can win every week and I don’t want a Scott Linehan Detroit team to damage that belief. Detroit will be tough at home. If we take ‘em, we start the final 3 quarters of the season with blazing confidence. If we lose to the Lions, suddenly the Chargers look like Juggernauts. Forget the Vegas line, we should win this game. That’s why it’s a trap game.

Please watch out for SUH!

31-23 Rams. If the Lions don’t sell a bunch more seats the game is going to be blacked out in Detroit. How’s that for home field advantage? Bradford should be able to use his indoor voice to bark out calls. However, the thing that scares me more than anything is that Suh may be a bit more inspired than he already is. The “I should have gone #1 overall” chip could be dangerous especially when he has a chance to hurt the guy that actually went #1. I hope our line is up to the task. Go Rams!

Do you still think 80% of the team should be in the UFL, Ramchop?

Darcy needs to go because:
Onobun > Gates... And because Darcy sucks.

by Carneros on Oct 9, 2010 10:34 AM CDT reply actions

I have qualified that statement a few times already. I think my last estimate was around 60-70%.

And remember a few things. I started using that 80% number before we’d even dumped slugs like Barron, Adeynaju, Null, Obog, Burton, etc. or acquired Clayton. The facts are we’re still a team made up of a few very elite players like Jackson, Sam and JL, but very marginal in other areas. We still don’t have a true #1 WR or DT. And regarding b/u RB, Darby has played far better than expected, but Toast has flopped. What do we do if we lose a single O-Lineman or Chris Long or JL or Sammy? There’s absolutely no depth there and in other places.

by RamChop on Oct 9, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Not elite is not UFL quality

And Barron was long gone when you said that. By your logic, every 2nd stringer in the entire league should be in the UFL.

Darcy needs to go because:
Onobun > Gates... And because Darcy sucks.

by Carneros on Oct 9, 2010 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Go back a few months and look at my posts Frack.

The facts are that we still have a lot of players that suckle and VERY little quality depth. Try answering a few of the “what if’s” from my last comment before you start foaming at the mouth and spewing sh*t next time. Now buzz off. I’m sick of your know-it-all attitude.

by RamChop on Oct 9, 2010 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Well around 47% of the team starts.

And we have some decent backups that other teams would like to have. So I’d say all of our starters are NFL quality and at least 1/4th of our backups are as well. So that would be 60% NFL quality. I’m also sick of your overly negative attitude. We’re winning and it looks like things are finally taking a turn for the better and you’re still not happy.

Darcy needs to go because:
Onobun > Gates... And because Darcy sucks.

by Carneros on Oct 10, 2010 1:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I think we have NFL quality youngsters who aren't there yet

Some less talented guys too, no doubt about it. But I don’t think its a roster devoid of all talent, it’s a roster with a lot of guys that haven’t gotten there yet. Case in point, the Oline today….I saw Jason Smtih get beat a couple times in pass protection which lead to Bradford not completing the pass. Does that make him a UFL player, or a guy who hasn’t even played a whole season yet and has a ways to go?

I have to say, there’s a huge difference between their good games and their bad ones. The inconsistancy is stark. There were so many holes today, I don’t even know where to start. But they showed vs. Pats in preseason and Skins 2 weeks ago that they do have some talent.

by CoachConnors on Oct 10, 2010 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Coach, I still say....

We’ve got some exceptional players; Sam, JL, Sjax, etc. some good players; Long, Atogwe, Amendola, Jones, Jason Brown, Josh Brown, Robbins, Clayton (ouch) etc. some ok & developing players; J. Smith, Saffold, Murphy, Bell, Bartell, Fletcher, Butler, etc. But from there it’s pretty much all down hill with the roster. At least 60% of our team, no other NFL team is gonna come lookin’ for…. btw I was right about Keith Null wasn’t I?

by RamChop on Oct 10, 2010 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Too early for most though

Well yes, I agree it’s downhill from there on how they have performed so far, but that doesn’t mean it’ll stay that way. Keep in mind it takes a couple of years for most athletes to play at their ceiling level. With a young team like this, it’s very difficult to tell whether a guy is just ok or near elite (leaving out extremes like bust or star)

When we see a young player get off to a fast start and perform well as a rookie or 2nd year guy, it’s easy to think someone else drafted the same year would/should be playing well too, and if he’s not then he’s just not very talented…. its easy to think they are probably not very talented.

The thing is a lot of high quality players come from rounds 3-7 and they struggle to play just ok for the 1 year, 2, even 3 before you can tell that they are developing into something very valuable. Some guys jump out to great starts, Laurinaitis is a good example, but each guy is on his own track and without being “on the scene” there with the team, it’s very difficult to make judgements about the talent or lack thereof on guys who are only in the 2nd/3rd year.

The large majority of WR’s really don’t do much for the year and a half. Most of the young guys on this board (which of course doesn’t include me and you) would cut a bonafide star WR after 25 or30 games because they would’ve prematurely judged them as busts instead of giving the athlete the time needed to get up to speed.

It’d be a lot easier if they had a few selected young guys surrounded by vets. Unfortunately they have one of the youngest (the youngest?) team in the league, and I would expect that to drag out the devlopment a little more and make it even more “non-linear” than normal.

All I’m saying is young players need time to prove themselves. We have an inordinate amount of them.

60% of our team is players that other teams wouldn’t come looking for? That might be accurate but “come looking for” implies expense. Like a trade or out-bid on contract or whatever.

I think at least 80% of our active roster could play for another NFL team. If he was drated by them, if he was signed and went to camp with them, if they had injuries, there’s a lot of reasons why someone with even a little NFL experience would be picked up by another team.

Going to the UFL is like saying he couldn’t even get on another team’s practice squad, and that’s just not true for the large majority of our active roster guys. Some, yeah, probably.

Keith Null: You were right about some things, yep. We said a lot about Null. I said I thought he could develop into a guy that could play in the league and that he does have some intangibles. His tangibles didn’t impress enough people to get him a job though. If that’s what you mean, yep you were right.

I knew Null was a goner when the new kid Thad played so well. Some guys here on this board were saying Null actually had a couple of scoring drives that salvaged the wins on a game or two and they thought he might be kept. I hope he gets a shot somewhere, but it might be tough because his regular season stats from last year will follow him around like a bad report card.

Take care, ed. Talk to you soon.

by CoachConnors on Oct 13, 2010 1:28 AM CDT up reply actions

You have no players to back up your statements. An overwhelming majority of players that are good or great NFL players do it in their first years. Every once in a while a coach will make a bad decision and keep one of these rookies on the bench sitting because " he is not ready yet" or the guys they have in front of them are coach favorites. Sometimes good players are inconsistent their first year but one thing is for certain, they show brilliance when they do get a chance even if it is for a play of two. None of our wideouts have shown anything but the ability to be covered, injured and to drop passes.

Now I have a feeling that you have to be talking about the average but productive players like Roy Williams, Meecham, Crayton, Mohammed and Michael Jenkins. Yeah these guys may take a while to develop and will get you some catches but, that is not the guy I want at #1 for our team. So lets go through a few teams and see how quickly a number one WR progresses.

Larry Fitzgerald- 1st year 780 and 8 td’s 2nd 1,409 and 10 td’s

M. Colston- 1st year 1,038 and 8 td’s 2nd 1,202 and 11 td’s

B Marshall- 1st year 309 and 2 td’s 2nd 1,325 7td’s

A Johnson- 1st year 976 and 4 td’s 2nd 1,142 7 td’s

R Moss- 1st year 1,313 and 17 td’s 2nd 1,413 and 11 td’s

Desean Jackson 1st year 912 and 2 td’s 2nd 1,156 and 9 td’s

I could go on and on and most of these guys didn’t start more than 12 games their first seasons…….Very few number ones have taken more than 2 seasons to show what they were made of and that they could be a stud in the NFL. In no way am I trying to be a jerk but, I think I have stated my case with fact and not much opinion at all. If I wanted to spit out my opinion it would be that the Rams would be lucky to field a true number 2 receiver out of this bunch and that if we don’t find a capable receiver before the deadline we are risking Bradford’s health and his confidence. Let’s be realistic, I am willing to say that Devaney and Spags have shown some improvement but, are they happy with this team? We do have a legit shot at making the playoffs if we can throw the ball. If not we will look like the 09 Rams and like we did against Detroit. There was one change in the line up and that was Clayton. Coincidence, I think not.

Ignorance is bliss and way too many people are happy.

by Everett 11 on Oct 13, 2010 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

you have no idea what you're talking about my friend, none at all, but thats only because

You’re the rare kind of person who is just as good in year 1 of his career as he will ever be, and while I certainly can’t fault your experience for leading you to your conclusion, I can say there’s ample evidence of most people (and most WR’s) aren’t like that. But you, sir, stand apart for reasons that are abundantly clear to those of us who are, well, not apart.

by CoachConnors on Oct 14, 2010 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Not exactly Carneros. Many of our first, second and third stringers would not make most teams. Evidence would be the Ravens fourth or fifth string wideout becoming the best WR on our roster in less than a week and another would be most of the D-Line starting when they could not gain or lost a starting position with the Ginas and other teams. If the Rams, Detroit, Cleveland and the Raiders didn’t exist, they would be in Canada and the UFL. If you don’t think so, just watch what happens when we release a bunch of guys in the off season. They will be practice squad or Canada.

Ignorance is bliss and way too many people are happy.

by Everett 11 on Oct 10, 2010 12:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude, Mark Clayton is not our best receiver

because of lack of talent. While we have a lack of talent, he’s our best receiver because he’s producing like it. You realize that if he were producing like this on most teams, he’d be their best receiver as well right? He just fits in with us much better than he did with the Ravens. As for the D-Line, they’re playing great. These guys fit extremely well together and Fred Robbins could be starting right now on ANY NFL team. Screw the past, some of our no name players are PERFORMING like one of the bests in the league and that’s all that matters. If Clayton was our best receiver with only 100 yards than you can use it against him but he is without a doubt playing like the best receiver.

I'm starting to like Pat Shurmur.

Dude, Mark Clayton is not our best receiver...

Really?!

you must not be able to read
Dude, Mark Clayton is not our best receiver because of lack of talent. While we have a lack of talent, he’s our best receiver because he’s producing like it.

Production is what makes you a good WR! Not 3-5 yr potential.

number one spot that very second. The fact that a perennially good team dropped him to 4th-5th on their depth chart makes me think that our other guys are just that bad. Well that and their production of course. Name one stud WR that didn’t produce anything for 2-3 years. That’s right it very, very rarely happens. I guess you are talking about our WR’s having POTENTIAL. Potential is a stupid word because they all have/had potential including Ryan Leif and Brian Bozworth. We need production not potential!

Sidney Rice.

Now look at him when he has a competent quarterback. Look at Mark Clayton how that he has an offense he fits into. Offenses have plenty to do with how the player fits in and what their strengths are. Flacco and Mark never clicked.

"If Dr. Frankenstein were to steal body parts and construct a perfect QB, the final product would look like Bradford. He has John Elway's size, Dan Marino's arm, Kurt Warner's accuracy and Stephen Hawking's brain."

by douchiedude on Oct 11, 2010 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Sidney Rice had a terrible QB in T Jackson throwing to him and Flacco is far from terrible. Maybe they didn’t click, I don’t know. However the OC coordinator and coaching staff design the plays not Flacco or Jackson. If Billick and Harbaugh didn’t like him after five seasons then I am going to guess he is average at best. Still good enough to be our #1. See the logic there? Haha! I think an offense that throws more is better for a wideout than one that doesn’t throw as much and vice versa for a running back. Just say " you are right everett11 I saw what happened today when Clayton got hurt. : )

Brian Bosworth didn't just have potential.

He was great when he was on the field. He was purely an injury bust, not lack of production.

Really?

Bosworth was real good, always spoken highly of by announcers about his play and how much passion he had for the game. The guy literally gave his body for the sport, he was just an undersized middle linebacker whose body couldn’t take the wear and tear of the NFL.

i was referencing the fact that you laughed at him because

he said clayton was not our best receiver… you obviously didn’t keep reading where he later said he was….

Any of our 1st string wouldn't even make another team?

simply false.

Saying Clayton was their 4th but became our1st in a week, so therefore all our guys are worse than any of theirs isn’t how works in real life. I know it sounds like it shold, but it doesn’t. In Clayton’s example, he had a lot of experience with Bradford in the offseason and they had some timing established already that guys like Gilyard haven’t even had the chance to set up. That doesn’t translate to mean all of the Ravens receivers are more valuable than Gilyard.

This is like saying the Rams beats the Redskins, and the Redskins beat the Packers, so the Rams are better than the Packers…….based on numbers about theories that don’t work in the real world.

Giving up all potential for current production = fail. That’s how the Redskins screwed themselves for so many years. If you don’t build though the draft and singing younger guys to developl, your team never solidifies at enough positionjs for the moeny you have. You could play it that back in the dynasty days, but not in today’s NFL

Isn't how it works in real life?!!!

Seems to have worked in this situation and yes it is "real life". Nothing I have said was false or opinion. The facts are that he was 4th or 5th on the Ravens depth chart, he came to the Rams and was open much more and caught a lot more balls than the pretenders that we have playing now. All of this in less than a full week of practice and no he didn’t have a lot of experience with Bradford this off season other than both being from Oklahoma. He was signed the week before the season started so our current guys have had a lot more practice and game time with Bradford and the Rams Offense

I am however saying that we should pursue a #1 WR before the trade deadline. It is much smarter to get a young WR now and possibly win the division than it is to roll the dice on getting some 1st round jack ass that may turn out to be Shaun Rodgers, Matt Jones or Mike Williams. Once again it is a much more calculated and all around intelligent decision (and that is proven) to get someone who has proven NFL talent over some Bula Bula Bowl guy. You also mentioned build through the draft again…it doesn’t work. If it did more teams would do it. The team of the decade (Patriots) add loads of free agents every year. Yes you have to draft well but, free agency is what brings you championships (1999 Rams).

I wouldn't call Sam elite yet.

He’s damn good for a rook, but he still has just 6 touchdowns to 6 interceptions. Also, we have a great DT in Robbins, we just don’t have one for the future. I feel you on that, we could use a young gun DT in this draft to learn from Fred.

I'm starting to like Pat Shurmur.

I love all of the debates back and fourth with the two teams.

You Rams fans are pretty cool in my book. You all are biased like me, but your tasteful about it. With that in mind, the Lions win Sunday 30-17 over the Rams with Bradford throwing 3INTs and get’s sacked 3 times. He throws a couple TD’s though and the Lions get ran over by Steven Jackson for 120+ yards.

But of course the score could go the opposite way and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit. Rams are a good team so far and are way better than last season when they beat us at Ford Field. Who knows, I’ll see you Monday to discuss the game guys!

Dude

I got to admire your post. At first I wanted to be pissed but then realized it’s the same thing that I would say about my team. Honestly I don’t see Sam throwing three INT’s because he is not one to make mistakes more than once. I do see him being clocked by Suh and I hope he survives it, or makes a great screen from all the pressure. This game is going to be about mistakes and who can score points from them. It’s so close, and both of these teams are so evenly matched that I don’t know if I have enough beer to ease my nerves. It should be a great game, and as much as I have to support my Rams, I hope the Lions continue their success but not this week because I’m a Rams fan, a Bradford fan, and a Redskins hater.

by OakCityRam on Oct 9, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree about the beer.

This game going to get pretty interesting if my Lions are down by 2TDs and I’m outta beverages. Good chance I start breaking things if that happens, might want to go to the store now than.

We are also way better.

I don’t think Bradford will throw 3 INTs.

Darcy needs to go because:
Onobun > Gates... And because Darcy sucks.

You were right....he was 23/45 for 215 and only 2 INT's

But I was not happy with his O-tackles, or with his recievers either.

Oh, I know why. Avery isn’t on the field. Haha!
