There is one main stat that I have always, ALWAYS hated. But I haven't been that bothered by it for a while because it hasn't pertained to MBR (My Beloved Rams) in...well...QUITE a while.
The stat in question is TOTAL TEAM DEFENSE. Which, as we all know, is rated according to total yards given up. Not by total points.
Currently, The Rams are sitting at 23 in the NFL.Yet, only 3 teams have given up less points than The Rams' 52; Minn at 38 (ranked 1), KC, also 38 (3) and PITT with 50 (8).
Now I know we haven't played any offensive power-houses yet and all that. Doesn't matter.
My issue with the stat is this; As a player, coach or fan...what do I care how many YARDS my D is giving up as long as we keep them out of the end zone? I would gladly finish the season with a defense that gave up an average of 500 yards per game and only 14 points. The last time I looked, no team EVER won a game by racking up more yards that the other team. Ask the Giants after their week 3 loss to the Titans. Total yards: Giants 471-Titans 271.
The TOTAL TEAM OFFENSE stat sucks, too. Just like I don't care about how many yards the D gives up as opposed to points, I also don't care if my offense racks up hundreds of yards only to turn the ball over or stall inside the red zone.
But it's the D stat I'm ranting about today. Why ? Because say what you will about how well Sam the Ram is playing (great) and how the O-Line is finally gelling (pretty damn well) and the fine play of SJAX and Clayton and Danny A. It's all GOOD. Really good. But the reason we're sitting at 2-2 right now is the play of the defense.
Keep it up D! Give up all the yards you want. Just keep 'em out of the end zone!
