Rodger Saffold "Breakdown" WK 6

Hey guys! Sorry I've been a bit absent here lately... I had time to throw together this weeks breakdown on a player who I am REALLY excited about.. it's no secret that Rodger Saffold continues to impress as a rookie.

The one thing that stands out to me is his mean streak and they way he stays with a block until the final whistle. Even if his player is out of the play, he looks to put a helmet on someone else. The guy was a steal for us in the draft, no question.

Enjoy!

yes if we didnt have the next greatest football player he would get nore press coverage. notice how our Defense hasnt gotten any praise yet.i think our defense had more to do with our wins this year than the offense.

No question our defense has taken a MAJOR leap

Imagine with another draft?

Hahaha yeah

I noticed that at the end, what a manbeast.

"If Dr. Frankenstein were to steal body parts and construct a perfect QB, the final product would look like Bradford. He has John Elway's size, Dan Marino's arm, Kurt Warner's accuracy and Stephen Hawking's brain."

The defense only hope to improve

because we will most likely miss out on AJ Green and stock our defense even more.

Did anyone else notice that Washington was cut today?

Saffold was a steal for sure. When that next draft happens, I really hope we go for Prince Amukamara as a cornerback. Wide receiver I’m sure we could just find one in the 2nd round. Plenty of good wide receivers next year for the draft and free agents. We should focus on our D-backs in the draft. We can continue with steals in the draft as well. Our organization does great with late round picks.

a standout corner would be sweet

Actually there are about 4-5 positions that we could use a real stud. Since I think we will be back towards the middle of the draft selections this year instead of the bottom (thank you lord) I really think we should go with BPA inside our top five needs with the first round. Whatever absolute stud is left inside one of our areas we can use we should get.

I thought the knock on him was for run blocking.

WELL I DON’T SEE ANY PROBLEM!!!! Saffold instantly goes into beast mode! I love it! Alex Barren should be taking notes.

I’m glad you pointed that out VTramsFan. I did not see that during the game. I know he is quickly becoming one of your favorites as I remember you did a prior breakdown on him. The FO seems to be money with our 2nd round picks. Maybe we do take a WR with the second!

Ohh man!...

… he is pretty damn quick for a big guy. It looks like the Rams are fortunate enough to have a great LT once again. Slater———→ Pace———-Saffold!

Look at that nice backside block! Who is that? We have alot of number 40 something players.

Thanks for the breakdown VT

I had focused in on SJ during that play and missed this block. Some of the guys instantly mentioned it but I hadn’t seen it. Looks like a monster blocking to me. Wonder why we don’t feed some balls to SJ running to the left and give Saffold some more chances to run block. I know they say he’s a weak run blocker but the man’s got heart and the other teams wouldn’t game plan for it. Worst that could happen is a couple of yard losses which is happening with some of the feeds up the middle and to the right anyway.

Yup I saw this one live

My comment from the game thread:

Rodger Saffold dropped a tremendous block on that. Sexy, sexy stuff boys

You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

Thanks for digging this out VT

… Saffold is a 1st round pick… no doubt in my mind. For some reason the Colts wanted him also.

Thanks again!

Sweet breakdown, as always, VT!

I got to see this guy at IU last year [and their QB is really missing him now!!!]. When Indy and NO passed on him at the end of the 1st round, I was pumped that the Rams did not trade down to get more picks. I am surprised that he’s at LT so soon, but I hope he continues his play and grows into mini-Pace.

Loving the new look Rams. I really thought it’d be another year til they were this good…with another good offseason and draft, we will all be thinking playoffs in ’11!!

Good pick, VT

I’ve been raving about how both our OT’s finish, and I’m glad you chose to spotlight that this time. Sometimes Jason Smith gets beat in pass protection by quick/fast guys, but they both have shown me they have a fighting demeanor, competitiveness and enough focus to stay with their man or even find the next guy after the first one is down. I really love that about them. Saffold being strong in the run game more than offsets Smith’s weakness in the pass, and that may even be just a temporary deficiency as he learns the NFL game.

Credit Billy Devaney for not only picking talent, but doubling up on what we thought were 2 LT’s in back to back drafts. Some guys wouldn’t have the conviction to do that because of the perception that if you take Saffold maybe that means Smith was a mistake. Bottom line? Bookends!
