Know Your Enemy: San Diego Chargers
Hey all, I'm John Gennaro. I am the Managing Editor over at Bolts from the Blue and I am here to answer your San Diego Chargers questions leading up to this weekend's game.
If you must know, and you must because this FanPost needs a certain number of words before it will let me actually post the thing, I am not real keen on talking football right this moment. After years of the contrary, I have lost a lot of my faith in the coaching staff and the players. I know both will probably be back, but this might be my lowest moment as a Chargers fan since the 1-15 season that netted us Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson.
So please, try and be nice. You probably don't want me to go from solemn to angry....and seeing as how we're not rivals, there's really no reason to get to that point.
Also, please rec this post so that it stays at the top of the page for the rest of the week. Your questions can go in the comments below, and I'll be back frequently to answer them.

What are your thoughts on Malcom Floyd going forward?
I suspected he’d blossom this season but I don’t know if that’s the right word for it, at least this far in the season? Is he clearly ahead of Nanee?
Julio Jones for Rams 2011....NOT Devier Posey!!!
Clearly he (Floyd) is ahead of Naanee
Hes definitely the number 2 receiver behind Gates. He has the third most yards in the nfl (a big reason is because against the Raiders he had 213 yards, lined up against Nnamdi) he is a great deep threat but isnt much of a threat for YAC. Hes a very talented receiver but most of his success is because of Rivers no doubt.
The number 3 receiver seems to be a number of people depending on the week, going from most likely to least likely would probably be Naanee, Buster Davis, Pat Crayton, sproles/mathews/tolbert and then Randy McMichael (you remember him)

Well said...
Malcom Floyd is a good, athletic receiver. The guy isn’t as fast as Moss but he’s almost as good in the air coming down with it. For a lean guy, he’s pretty fearless in the middle of the field too. Obviously, there’s little more you can say when he gets 200+ yards with Asomugha covering him most of the day. As cameronm said, a lot of that is Rivers. Rivers is totally fearless and he’s not afraid to throw into one on one coverage against guys like Nnamdi, or Revis for that matter. Rivers has torched Champ Bailey so many times I find it difficult to even view him as an elite corner anymore. Revis, on the other hand, batted away almost everything Rivers threw his direction and even made a lucky/freak interception. He’s just ridiculously good. But I digress…
Champ Bailey is elite, yeah.
But Rivers is one of the all-time greats. You don’t know it yet, because he’s half a generation behind Manning and Brady, but you’ll be talking about him the same way in ten years. In 76 regular-and-postseason games, he’s never thrown more than two ints in one game, and now he’s a lock to lead the league in YPA for three consecutive years (currently he’s about two feet per attempt ahead of #2 Jay Cutler) and on track to break Marino’s yardage record, though that’s to some extent a knock on the Chargers’ worst-in-history special teams play.

I love Rivers and in watching him play he looks like a (Peyton) Manning
He’s one of my favorite players and I agree that he will be close to what Manning and Brady, especially if he keeps having a weapon like Gates.
Darcy needs to go because:
Onobun > Gates... And because Darcy sucks.
sure
can we have the rams 2nd and 3rd round picks?
Life is like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance, you must keep moving.-Einstein
Sure
As long as Kris Dielman and Darren Sproles are also heading to St. Louis as part of this deal. No? Okay, enjoy that compensatory pick.
Compensation
Do you really believe this is just compensation for Vincent Jackson?
This is a player that has two strikes on his record and will miss 6 games of a season and will not know a teams playbook. In addition, his new team would have to pay him the long term deal to make those terms even half-way worth it. 2 picks are not worth ten games.
It’s definitely clear that he does not and will not play for San Diego ever. If no deal gets done before the trade deadline, it’s a complete loss for both sides.
Here is an odd scenario...
… I mean he has to be thinking about the lockout possibility next year. If he isnt signed with a team, he has no income.
How would you get around that? The only thing I can think of is to offer myself to a team for much less money than I am worth so that the high draft picks become worth it for another team.
There was a story that his agents were paying him monthly. Basically as an investment towards the future.

You just argued against yourself. 2 picks are not worth 10 games, but any team that gets him would have to sign him long term. Considering the Broncos got two 2nd round picks for Brandon Marshall, I don’t think the Chargers are too far out of line in asking for a 2nd and a 3rd for Jackson.

Timing is everything
If Jackson was traded at or around the same time, then a 2nd and a 3rd was probably right (maybe even cheap). Now, nearly a third of the way through the season with a 3 game suspension pending after he signs his tender, a 2nd and a 3rd seems disproportionate compensation.
As time ticks by, with no apparent intention on either side to work out a long term deal in San Diego, Jackson’s value diminishes as he ever nears FA when he likely goes to the Redskins (IMO).
Can’t blame anyone for getting as much as they can out of a deal for themselves, this is the NFL, but even as desperate as we are (AND WE ARE!), I can’t see Jackson now being worth it.
Do you think that AJ would give him a long term deal if he swollowed his pride and signed like McNeill (basically saying to AJ, ‘okay, you win’)? It seems like there may be too much water under the bridge for the 2 sides to come together, so surely it is time to take our early 2nd rounder rather than the last 3rd round pick isn’t it?.
P.S sorry to bore you with this again, I guess this is the 6th straight week you’ve had this from opposing fans, let alone discussing it amongst yourselves.
The only way VJax gets traded
is if he can agree to a long term contract with another team first. Only then would a team be willing to give up a few high draft picks. The problem is, VJax won’t come down on his price, so no one is biting.
On the Charger’s side of things, I think it’s beginning to be personal. AJ Smith is not going to let VJax see the light of day until he gets something of value for him. In some ways, Marcus McNeil signing his tender might have been a result of his hardball tactics. Plus, he’s setting a precedent that you better not F with the boss. He’s content to let VJ rot all year and take his chances on the new collective bargaining agreement. VJ, is placing a pretty large bet that he will reach free agency next year.
Despite all the big talk from his side, it still wouldn’t surprise me to see VJax show up and play the last 6 games of the season, ensuring he gets free agency status.
Im sure you've heard of our receiver news..
..if not.. our #1 and #2 receivers are out for the season, and your pass D is highly ranked..
How high are the BFTB crew on stopping the young Sam Bradford, being that he has nobody to throw to?
Well seeing as though there's no receivers
we’ll probably play a soft zone and he’ll carve us up. We don’t like to put pressure on the other team when they’re down.
Sorry, forgot to add sarcasm alert at the beginning. That’s what happened last Sunday with Campbell. Pressured him and we looked good. Got 9 points ahead and the we go soft and the complete 93 and 70 something yd drives for td’s.
If we keep up the pressure Bradford will struggle, if not who know’s what might happen.

UC Season ticket holder and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to see Mardy in a Rams uniform.
I just knew a little better to temper some of my expectations.
Really.
Truth is, you have to make the Chargers respect your run game if you want to throw the ball. With ILB Brandon Siler, OLB Larry English and SS Steve Gregory out, the defense can be had up the middle. Antwan Applewhite, English’s backup, is a slightly better pass-rusher than English, but not as stiff against the run. Siler’s backup, the wily Stephen Cooper, is a veteran famous for outsmarting Peyton Manning in the playoffs, but he’s a good guy to run at (unlike Siler, whose nickname is “King Kong” … this week, though, he’s Sir Not Appearing In This Football Game). Gregory’s backup, Paul Oliver, is a better athlete, but not nearly as savvy.
Don’t expect big days from your WRs against the Chargers defense. It’s not a big deal that you’re running schmoe WRs. Our secondary plays up to good WRs, anyway. How’s your TE and run game?

Don't panic
Aren’t the Bolts notoriously slow starters? Though the context of the games may be different, they’ve started off 2-3 in each season dating back to 2007, and made it to the playoffs every time. Thinking back, have they really looked that much worse than the past 2-3 starts? Not trying to pile on. It’s just that there’s plenty of football to be played yet.
Rivers and Gates are both playing out of their minds. Special teams aside, what do you see as the team’s weak spots?

Yes, I agree
All of it true. We have to blitz and guess correctly in order to get pressure. Ron Rivera is doing the best he can with mediocre LBs and D linemen.
I’m just not sold on our Defense. I hate the term, smoke and mirrors… but it does seem to fit our defense. If we can confuse the other offense, we’ll do well. If they line up and run straight down our throats, we can get worn down. Having said that, our corners are highly underrated.
Overall, this is a better team than last year
Offense: Just as good passing, much better running the ball. LaDainian was hurt the last two years, and in fact has declined significantly on top of it. Also, the OL has had a year to gel together, and the interim LT we had was a better run-blocker, though he’s now on the bench as McNeill is back. So the offense is overall slightly improved, from absurdly otrageous to, uh, ludicrous?
Defense: I agree they’re playing above their talent, but that’s kind of the way it goes, you know? The defense is not “clutch,” but if the offense and special teams can get something going, the D can keep the game out of reach.
Special Teams: We’ve had some catastrophic personnel issues. Long snappers are the unsung heroes of the league. A bad long snapper, and it doesn’t matter what the rest of your team does; you’re doomed. Losing David Binn in Week 1 was just cataclysmic. Had it happened in the offseason, we would be fine right now, but in the regular season we’re just going to give away most of our road games until we get our LS situation worked out. I have a good feeling about the new guy, but I said that the last four times.

what is it like having randy mcmichael?
let’s just say that he didn’t really work out for the rams….. in fact he was crap for us… maybe the upgrade from Bulger to Rivers (i can’t even quantify….) and supporting threats around him helped him… and you know being a #2 with a lowered salary…
come to think of it, why would you even give a shit about randy?
OK until last week
McMichael had the ball at his feet after Rivers was hit and fumbled. Instead of dive on it he tried to pick it up/fumble around with it and then the raiders safety grabbed it and ran 64 yds for a td.
So Randy not in the good books at the moment. FALL ON THE BALL RANDY!!!!

I picked SD as my survivor team last week.
Why were they passing when they were so close to an easy FG and had plenty of time.
They were in easy FG range until Norv called an outside run with our slowest RB, which led to a holding call. Then it became a little bit more difficult FG, and Kaeding had been limping around earlier.

Speaking of that...
What is with the love of ex Ram TEs? Didn’t Manu used to play for you guys too?
Yup
We actually traded for Manu.
There’s no real correlation, it’s more of a coincidence. The Chargers needed a run-blocking TE and Manu was available. This offseason, they saw McMichael was available and scooped him up.

He doesn't need to be the #1 guy
We obviously know who the #1 TE in San Diego (in the universe) is. This is just my opinion, but I think we just wanted another person around who can catch a ball, given the VJax situation. Also, we lost Manumlaherejlerehkea and needed a body there. I think Manu was a better run blocker, however. I remember him getting blown up in pass protection more than a few times.
Yeah that was his weakness
Tho Manu could catch passes too, unlike McMichael. I’ll be frank, a lot of Ram fans were happy to see Randy go.
That other guy you have Antoine Gaytes (Sp.?), he’s pretty okay too.
Local media hyped up McMichael's pass catching
So far, he hasn’t done much. That is, except staring at the fumble he should have fallen on, but was instead run back 60 yards for the game clinching TD against the Raiders. Seriously, that play pissed me off so much. Fall on the damn ball, don’t stare at it?!?!?
Penalty
They drove the Raiders 23 and then went with a running play to the outside but Gates got called for a holding penalty. That made it a long field goal for the win and Norv must not have liked that so they went pass. Still could have ran the ball in that position in my opinion. Maybe Norv doesn’t have as much faith in Kaeding as he says.

Gates' penatly was a killer
They were in a spot where they were clearly going to run it until the Raiders stopped it. I agreed with making a throw after being backed up, but the Raiders were blitzing on every down. They needed short slants or a screen or a flare to slow it down. But instead, they were dropping back trying to get it down the field. I just didn’t get it.
Most of us here understand what you are going through...
… lemme guess the great coach left. An offensive genius took over, but lacks teaching the discipline that a real head coach stresses…taking care of the football, no dumb penalties….then the team slowly erodes over time until the only thing left that is any good is the offense but opposing teams just work around that via exposing your defense and terrible special teams…..Yeah we hear ya bro!
What we can say is hopefully the FO will fire Norv before the team cant make it to the playoffs anymore and install a headcoach that can restore diciplined focused football to a very talented football team. If the FO doesnt, well then they end up like the St Louis Rams the last 5 years.
Incorrect
An offensive genius took over, but lacks teaching the discipline that a real head coach stresses…taking care of the football, no dumb penalties
Before the beginning of this season, the strength of Norv Turner’s Chargers teams has been that they consistently win by not making mistakes, not getting dumb penalties and taking care of the football. It’s just the first few games of this season where it’s been a problem, and in reality if he can get the team back to being disciplined like it was there’s no reason they should lose any more games.
I think Norv Turner is slightly better at being a HC than Martz, personally. However, it’s not a totally ridiculous comparison.

Ahh I have the wrong impression about Norv Turner...
… I just remember that 14-2 chargers team under Marty was a force! They just caught a really bad break…well…the patriots just do that to teams sometimes. Another run I thought would turn out differently. Also Brees with the injury after he was so good and the team…its like they didnt even really evaluate it. “We got Rivers so cya”. And Rivers is good but…brees is just a half second faster upstairs.
That being said, I have not doubt they will get on a run again and who knows, they might go all the way. They seem to do very well at replacing good players and keep moving so the more shots in the playoffs, the more opportunities to win it all.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Brees situation.
the patriots just do that to teams sometimes.
Marty Schottenheimer does that to his own teams. All the time.

…the patriots just do that to teams sometimes
The Patriots didn’t “just do that” to us. We had a number of absurd/silly mental lapses on defense keeping the Patriots in the game, like a facemask penalty on an uncatchable pass on 3rd and long, or a fumbled interception on fourth down, which could have been batted down to end the game. And then there was Marty’s absurd use of timeouts.
Nah, Marty was a choker. He’d build these teams that looked so solid and “fundamentally sound,” but then when the big game came around, they’d wimp out. Norv is the anti-Marty. His teams come out seeming finessey, and maybe a tad too smart for their own good, and then they whip themselves into shape or don’t. He’s only a good coach if he has lieutenants who are winners, like Rivers, Rivera and until recently Binn and Osgood.
And Rivers is good but…brees is just a half second faster upstairs.
Rivers is three years behind Brees. Brees three years ago wasn’t nearly as good as Rivers is now. Rivers is better this year than he was last year, and has improved year-over-year as a player in every one of his seasons (okay, statistically, ’06 was better than ’07, but that was because of the awesomeness of his supporting cast).

Brees wasn't playing nearly as well in San Diego
In fact, he was very mediocre the entire time. His best season was 12-4 and that was when he was captain check down to LT. Obviously, he’s a great QB now. But Rivers was the right decision at the time and I’m not convinced it still wasn’t the right decision. I simply can’t see Brees doing the same things he’s done in NO on this Chargers team. Probably because he never did wearing lighting bolts. I wasn’t even close. His injury, in a lot of ways, really was the best thing for him. He had to rehab that shoulder and, in the process, he made his arm stronger than it was. He threw plenty of ducks in SD. Arm strength was definitely a topic of conversation when he was in SD.
As everyone in SD always says, good for him, good for us. We’re happy with Rivers. The guy is a stud, he’s a leader, and we’re glad he’s our QB.
So it sounds like you Charger fans pretty much like everything about the team...
…so why to they start so bad every year? Does the Coaching staff just need 3-5 games after training camp and preseason to tie up all the loose ends? Do they get the injury bug early and it just takes a bit to adjust?
Do you guys think they are about to go on a run this year? If so, could you please tell them that they need to get their butt kicked by the Rams first before they really assess their issues and then they can go 10 straight and win the division LOL!
…so why to they start so bad every year? Does the Coaching staff just need 3-5 games after training camp and preseason to tie up all the loose ends? Do they get the injury bug early and it just takes a bit to adjust?
All of that. Last year it was adjusting after big-time injuries to the d-line and o-line. The season before it was Rivers coming back from two torn ACLs and the team missing Merriman. This year it has something to do with the injuries at OLB.
The coaching just seems to make the same dumb mistakes to start every season. Not enough pressure, predictable and bad play-calling, etc. It seems like they need to get into desperation mode before everyone turns it on, and most Chargers fans are pretty tired of it.

What happened to Merriman?
Just injuries, or were there other factors? I saw he was put on IR today.
A bunch of things
He was put on IR, but won’t be out for the season. They essentially have put him on “the injured list” and will be forced to release him when he gets healthy. Some weird IR rule that nobody knew about until now. Here’s the reasons:
1) Health – He hasn’t been right since 2007.
2) Production – Goes along with the health.
3) OLB health – Jyles Tucker is already on IR and Larry English is out for at least a few more games. Having 3 OLBs out at the same time was tough.
4) Special Teams – The Chargers have had, without a doubt, the worst special teams all season. Blocking for punts, covering Kickoffs and Punts….it’s all been ridiculously bad. Because of his health, Merriman couldn’t help. The team has signed Antwan Barnes to replace him, he’ll back up Antwan Applewhite, and help on Special Teams.
Bolts from the Blue - Destroying your opinions with facts.
by John Gennaro on Oct 13, 2010 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions
That is certainly a strange rule
It’s a shame. I remember him starting with a bang in the NFL. Such a force. We have some problems at OLB as well, since we don’t really have great blitzing OLB’s and they have had trouble getting sideline to sideline. Our special teams (see last week) needs some work, as giving up a 105 yard touchdown does not exactly set a good tone. You can never have enough special teams guys.
The Chargers' pass defense is highly ranked right now
In your estimation, having watched the games, how much of that is due to facing questionable competiton at QB (murderer’s row of Cassel, Hass, Anderson/Hall, Garrard and Campbell/Gradkowski) and how much is due to the team playing at a high level?
Both
I’ve watched the film for every game, some more than once, and Both Cason and Jammer are excellent in coverage. QB’s usually have gone to Tight Ends and dump offs because the secondary has the middle and deep field covered. Bet on Bradford throwing most of his completions to anyone not covered by Cason or Jammer. They’ve both allowed fewer than 50% completions.

I think our defensive standing
(2nd or 3rd in the league, overall) is largely due to weak competition. I think by the end of the year, we’re somewhere around 10th in the league, which isn’t bad. I just don’t think we’re elite (top five).
Jammer and Cason are holding things down with our inconsistent pass rush. We get a lot of sacks because we blitz from every direction. But if the offense guesses right and blocks it up, our corners can be one on one on islands. Considering all that, they’re doing a great job. But I think teams will be able to run on us. That worries me the most. I hope I’m wrong, but the two long Raider drives last week have me nervous.
Won't happen

Is Rivers a douche towards his teammates?
I never liked him, but i also acknowledge him as one of the elites, I’m not ignorant. But sometimes it seems like he gets pissed off at his teammates. Maybe he’s just pissed in general, but he looks like he wants to punch his linemen or receivers at times.

We don't think Rivers is a douche.
He’s talkative, emotional, expressive, and has a reddish cast to his skin, with pointy eyebrows and an upturned nose. That doesn’t make him a douche. He almost says douchey things to the media; the worst thing I can remember him saying that made it to the press is calling Ellis Hobbs the “sorriest corner in the League” at the end of the ’06 divisional playoff game.
As far as yelling at his teammates on the field, uh, he is the foreman, and the crew kind of had it coming. Besides, it’s loud out there, so it’s not like he could talk softly. What, should we expect him to be the Lineman Whisperer? Never see Peyton Manning or Tom Brady gesticulate wildly and bark at the WR? We think of Rivers as a rather animated good ol’ boy, slowly adapting the Dan Fouts mantle of MFIC. In interviews, he seems kind of friendly and brainy. On the field, well, you know who the QB is.
