Bruuuuce in the mix for WR coaching job?

I can't think of a better way to keep the fires of tradition stoked for the St. Louis Rams than hiring Isaac Bruce as the team's wide receivers coach, a job he's reportedly interested in

Coming off a 1-15 season preceded by 3- and 2-win seasons, this team needs a solid link to the high flying days that kicked off this decade. What better way to start that than by bringing Isaac Bruce back in a coaching role? This is a way better move than signing him for a day just so he can retire as a Ram.

This would be awesome

Who doesn’t love Bruce? I would be thrilled to see him back on the Rams’ sideline in some capacity. Just goes to show how great St. Louis is when players like him want to come back after being gone. (See Big Mac and now apparently Jimmy Baseball too).

Spags better make the right call

If Bruce is interested, I don’t know how we could look elsewhere. He will bring immediate credibility and knowledge to our receiving core. More importantly, he will bring back tradition, excellence, character, and hope.

I voted no..

because of the way the poll was worded. I would love to have Bruce working on the sidelines for the Rams, but how do we know if he is ready to take over are the WR coach? I would think an assistant WR coach would be more fitting until he actually has some experience. Bruce has never been in the Rams new style of offense so it would be a learning curve for him as well. If after a year he shows an aptitude for the job promote him to WR coach. Just my thoughts.

by Ramfan from Seattle on Jan 20, 2010 11:12 AM CST reply actions

How do you get experience?

Maybe by being a HOF’er WR? He probably has a few ideas about how to get open.

by Knoxfan on Jan 20, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

Players coaching

Being a good player has never proven to mean you would be a good coach. Some people are made for coaching and some aren’t regardless of what their skills were on the field.

agree

case in point wayne gretzky i know this is a football blog but the great one is a not so great coach in fact he was horrible

wrong player

I think you are refering to Art Shell. He was raiders coach not Jackie Slater.

by peporo28 on Jan 21, 2010 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

No wonder Art Shell failed-

Not only did he have to put up with Al Davis, I guess he had a big identity problem.

by Knoxfan on Jan 21, 2010 6:17 PM CST up reply actions

Don't know if I would say never-

A lot of very good players HAVE turned out to be very good coaches. It may be an even toss-up, but the players (IMO) could buy into Bruce the way they buy into Spags. Past history of production and class promote giving 110%

by jlcdb70 on Jan 20, 2010 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

he'd be fine as the WR coach.

You’re putting a little too much into it. The coach works on route running and positioning and stuff like that. Technique stuff.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

by Tackle Box on Jan 20, 2010 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

Yes

He might not be good as a head coach, but he’d be coaching what he’s done the past 15 years with great success. And if he really needs help teaching, bring in the experienced WR coach as the assistant. I don’t see how he wouldn’t be good for this job.

by Carneros on Jan 20, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Fumbles?

Hopefully, he teaches the WRs how to hold onto the ball.

by 81 Witness on Jan 20, 2010 12:38 PM CST reply actions

Great players dont

always make good coaches…that being said I would be fully behind such action here. Who better to teach our your corps how to be better wide-outs than one of the best ever?

by Propayne on Jan 20, 2010 12:39 PM CST reply actions

i think...

Bruce has been around plenty of wide receiver coaches to know what his responsibilities would be

by Danteslion on Jan 20, 2010 12:41 PM CST reply actions

He'd be a WR coach not a coordinator

There’s a difference between being a coach that develops skills and a coach that has to coordinate plays. Bruce as our WR coach would be AMAZING!!!! He’s a future hall of famer and like someone else said it would be better for him to return as a coach then to sign him for just 1 day so he can retire a ram. I like this approach much better

by revrue914 on Jan 20, 2010 12:57 PM CST reply actions

Bruce would be an amazing addition

to the coaching staff and he definitely meets the four pillers. and sign him as a player for a day so he can retire with the jersey he belongs in.

It's the least we can do.

It’s like McGwire coming back to the Cardinals, he was a city icon and wanted to try out coaching. Except Isaac Bruce didn’t cheat, is one of the greatest of all time, and was an icon in all of pro football.

As much as I hate Nebraska, I want Suh in Saint Lou.

At first I didn't like the idea

I’m beginning to think it’s alright. If not Bruce, then who?

by dbcouver on Jan 20, 2010 3:41 PM CST reply actions

ISSAC BRUCE

ISSAC BRUCE is an institution in RAMVILLE! The RAMS did him wrong and they owe this to him! He is an excellent mentor and still has good skills and would dewfinately be an asset! He runs circles around T.O., MOSS, KEYSHAWN and especially Michael, lets smoke some crack Irvin, who was a first ballot HOF inductee. Get smart RAMS, Hire him and get a excellent Offensive Coordinator, the one now SUCKS! Go out and get a SLOT RECIEVER who can compliment Jackson and help the recieving corp, like WELKER, BUSH and athletes like that, it’s time to stop LOSING and start WINNING, by the way, you need a great R.B. to backup Jackson or he will end up destroyed like Bulger.

by California Mobile CPR on Jan 20, 2010 5:41 PM CST reply actions

A slot receiver to compliment Jackson?

Don’t see the connection there, but how about Jordan Shipley as our slot receiver? Mid-late round pick and had a lot of success in college.

by Carneros on Jan 20, 2010 10:24 PM CST up reply actions

Bruce

and spags would get along great since Bruce is supposed to be a reverend in a couple years. Also It would boost fan moral and maybe he could teach some of are receivers that thing he and Torry would do where right after the catch they would do that dive to avoid the hit it’s kept bruce in the league this long.

Issac Bruce would be a great Wide Receiver's Coach.

I would love to see Bruce come back to St. Louis and help out our young wide recievers. This would be awesome!

by brians rams on Jan 20, 2010 9:22 PM CST reply actions

I say Isaac

I think that it would be a great thing to let Isaac Bruce become our WR coach. If for any reason, i feel St.Louis owes it to him after years of great play. Hopefully Spags does something that negates what the past regime should have never done (showing Bruce the door), and bring him back to St.Louis where he belongs.

by Cloud324 on Jan 20, 2010 11:02 PM CST reply actions

Well

to be fair, St. Louis already paid him to play for them for his years past. What St. Louis owes is a winning season to its fans.

It would be nice to see Bruce honored, retired as a Ram, and put on the coaching staff; especially considering he’s been on a Super Bowl winning squad and should know what it takes..

THIS year's the year. I hope....

by thisguy on Jan 21, 2010 10:45 AM CST up reply actions

It all starts in the Locker room

I guess you could read volumes about how a winning attitude starts in the locker room. It comes as a theme of “force multiplier” -comradship, or whatever it’s called. I think Bruce can bring this attitude, working one-on-one with the mindset of “it’s the team, not you.” In college, guys that are 18, 19, 20 years old have to be reprogramed to understand that they will only become great by the effort of those around them. If Bruce does become an assistant, let’s hope he would bring that ability with him. At 1-15, it’s going to be a full load keeping pumped up to give 110% every day, every game.

by Knoxfan on Jan 21, 2010 11:30 AM CST reply actions

Mad jealous, seriously.

49ers fan, I know Bruce was demoted for us later in the season but I honestly felt.. I don’t know, is it weird to say honored when I talk about having Bruce play for the team?

He was a great guy, did a lot of amazing things for Josh Morgan, Michael Crabtree and even Vernon Davis (much to Rams fans chagrin, I imagine) and that experience he passed on was probably priceless. I attended every home game for the 49ers and stood up and said BRUUUUUCE and felt SO AWESOME for it.

Should be nothing but great for you guys if the move goes through.

I chose water over wine... Jars of formaldehyde... think of all the things I missed... Why'd you make me a scientist?

by Ninjames on Jan 22, 2010 2:49 AM CST reply actions

I really think

It was a bad move to let bruce go in the first place. I mean he was aging but he stayed relatively healthy through out his career. I think if we would have kept him til now it would have benefited because he could have been a number one receiver and marc would sync up with his route running abilities. Plus if i’m not mistaken he didnt have that big of a contract. I know he’s not really a number one material at this age but anyone who can catch a ball and find a patch of grass thats open could have been a number one this year.

not so fast...

why would he want to come back to a s**thole like st louis when there are so many good places he could go?

by same_old_ rams on Jan 24, 2010 1:59 AM CST reply actions

It's hard to argue with that type of reasoning.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

by Tackle Box on Jan 24, 2010 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Not so fast two-

Why is Bruce thinking retirement? He’s not competitive anymore that’s why. He can’t go to ANY team above .500 and start. If he comes home, his knowledge and mentoring is worth mountains more than his trying to extend playing for glory past. That glory can only be reclaimed by providing the spark for the receivers that might return the Rams to the GSOT with HIS NAME ATTACHED TO IT!!! GO BRUCE!! GO RAMS!!

by Knoxfan on Jan 24, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Because he has class and probably wants to retire as a member of the team he helped to win a SB, not saying those are very good reasons ya know, just thinking out loud?

If practice makes perfect....
