Reunite Spags with a DE?

As we are looking for players for the future of the Rams, I have been looking for possible guys to fill holes but more importantly make an impact.  Now this may be a bit of a stretch, but I feel it is worth considering.  One of Spags products back in New York, Osi Umenyiora, has been having quite a bit of trouble with their new Def coordinator Sherridan.  In fact, it got so bad that after the last game he exploded and said some things that you wouldn't say unless you were very emotional or drunk.  Take read below:

"EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- An incredulous Osi Umenyiora expressed his frustration after the New York Giants' dismal performance against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and wondered whether he had played his last game with the team.

"I couldn't really explain what I'm feeling right now, disappointment is an understatement, in everything, the way everything has played out this year has been absolute nonsense, very disappointed, disheartened, discouraged, whatever you want to call it," Umenyiora said after the Giants' 41-9 loss to the Panthers.

"I feel all those emotions," the two-time Pro Bowl defensive end said. "On a day like this, for us to come out and perform like that is unbelievable to me. I don't even know what else to say."

Umenyiora, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, lost his starting job to Mathias Kiwanuka earlier this month. He said he played about five plays on Sunday in a loss that left the Giants (8-7) needing a ton of help to make the playoffs.

"I don't know, I don't know what happened," Umenyiora said. "I thought I was the problem. It's an unbelievable situation, man. Last game at Giants Stadium, probably as a Giant, just the way everything has unfolded has been unbelievable. I never would have dreamt this in a million years, but it is what it is, we live and we learn."

When pressed about the game and his future, a watery-eyed Umenyiora cut off the interview.

"I'm about to say something that would get me really messed up, so I'm just going to leave now," he said. "You guys have a good day."

Umenyiora did not have a tackle in the game.

After a couple of days and some cooling off, he came with another statement:

"Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora made it clear Sunday that he was unhappy about his backup status and hinted that he may have played his final home game with the team. On Wednesday, Umenyiora clarified his remarks and expressed hope that he would return to the Giants in 2010. But he would like to see a couple of changes before that happens.

"Frustration, man, definitely a whole bunch of frustration," said Umenyiora. "I think given the fact that it was the last game at Giants Stadium, all the things that our predecessors have done there, all the things we’ve done there as a team, all the things I’ve done there as a player, to see the team play like that, especially the defense, not being able to go out there and help more or play as much as I’d like, it definitely made me angry and frustrated and I came in and just reacted without much thought."

If Umenyiora had stopped at that point, everyone may have been ready to move on down the road. But it's obvious that while he may have a better handle on his emotions, he still expects some changes to be made.

"I’m not a third-down player, I’m not a third-down rusher," Umenyiora told reporters. "I play the run and I’ve played the run this year. I think I had a bad game against Denver -- a bad quarter against Denver -- and things kind of snowballed from there. But in actuality, who on this team has played excellent every game? Things happen. I cannot take that away from myself because I’m only in on third downs and they say I can’t play the run. That’s absolute BS because I can and there’s film there to prove it."

Umenyiora is a proud player who has succeeded in this league, so I can understand his frustration. I can also tell you that general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin don't deal particularly well with ultimatums from players. You can ask Jeremy Shockey about that last statement.

At the end of the day, I believe that Umenyiora thinks that he was shown up by the coaching staff. I know that a couple other players were benched, but Umenyiora had the highest profile. Like any player in his situation, Umenyiora is probably also worried about how this will affect his market value. If the Giants took the unlikely step of trying to trade Umenyiora, he would want a new deal. No Pro Bowl-quality player wants to have the perception of not being able to play the run -- and that's why I think Umenyiora's being so vehement in his comments.

"I have spent the last seven years of my life here. I have a bunch of great friends here, but this situation cannot continue the way it is. There are definitely some things that are going to be changed." Thank you Mr. Mosley and ESPN.

Now one thing is clear...Osi wants to play more downs and if Sherridan is not going to accommodate that, then he is going to want out.  So I purpose you this, if the Giants and Osi can't see eye to eye, why not make a play at the guy and fill a hole at DE with a proven Pro-bowler.  If anyone knows how to use and communicte with this guy it would be Spags.  Not to mention, if Osi were to wear blue and gold, playing lots of downs would not be a problem it would be expected.  So the questions I ask are these:

What would it take to get Osi from New York?  Maybe a 3rd this year and a 5th next year....if we were lucky

What would you be willing to give up for him?

What do you think the chances are that it could even happen?

With that in mind how would a Def line of Osi, Suh, Ryan, and Long look?

Hmm...I've been pondering this as well.

He’s 28, coming off a 7 sack, 4 fumble season. I haven’t watched much Giants’ football lately, so going off the stats alone I’d say he’s had a solid season considering he’s coming off a devastating injury. Based on that, I’d be willing to give up a 3rd rounder. Keep in mind we could have Carriker as a rotation DE/DT (health permitting) as well as Gibson and Darrell Scott. I’d like our D-Line to include Suh, Long, a rejuvenated Umenyiora, and either Carriker or Ryan at DT.

Make it happen Billy D.

He's frustrated playing for the Giants?

He might go postal (not in the good way) playing for the Rams…

Not if he and Suh, Long, and Ryan can turn around this defense.

Not to mention being reunited with his Coach. It sounds like he’s just mad at the lack of snaps more than anything. He’d have plenty here.

His frustration

is due to the fact that Sherridan and him aren’t getting along. in fact, Sherridan has decided not to play Osi during running situations. They have mainly used him in 3rd down situations. I mean 6 snaps for a pro-bowl DE. If you don’t want him, I’ll take him and we will give him plenty of snaps here.

Osi, Suh, Ryan, and Long

Laurinaitis would love that.

S-St. Louis, R-Rams, D-Dallas, M-Mavericks, A-Arizona, D-Diamondbacks.

Oh right

Ram_rod… stealing my thunder. Just kidding, I guess they say great minds think alike.
I have been thinking about this since I saw the Giants post game interview with Osi. Once I saw the post about Marshall, I figured this would be worth mentioning, and probably not that unrealistic.

osi

think carriker and some picks could go to NY for osi?

by ramsrule on Jan 2, 2010 8:32 PM CST reply actions

Long,Suh,Carriker(if healthy), Osi...

That would be Spags’ wet dream! And prolly mine too! I think that in this next offseason we will really start to see what spags and devaney have in stored for rebuilding process. I believe that they are wanting to build a top tier defense and a hefty offensive line with capable but inexpensive weapons on offense(Amendola, Gibson, Avery,Fells). Would you guys be willing to watch Bulger as the starting QB if we don’t get a decent replacement in FA or a rookie qb under center to have a stud like defense? I think I would!

by revrue914 on Jan 2, 2010 9:54 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I dont want to let myself even get that hopeful

that would be an incredible D line. The Rams would contain every running game in the division, and the QB-WR combo’s aren’t good enough to dominate. St Lou would contend in every division game they played.

by CoachConnors on Jan 3, 2010 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

What was I thinking?

Arizona has a sorta ok QB-WR combo.

by CoachConnors on Jan 5, 2010 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

i wasn’t sure what you meant by that… Arizona was the first team I thought of.

by CaliRamMan on Jan 6, 2010 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

I see the Giants fired Sheridan today.

I think that pretty much means Osi will stay with the Giants. It was a fun thought, but it doesn’t seem likely now.

awesome

i would love this dline Long, Suh, Carriker and Osi. now all we need is a QB and a a possession reciever like Marshall

by RamzOwn94 on Jan 6, 2010 5:23 PM CST reply actions

Giants fan here...

for real? You’d want Osi?

Would I be out of line if your 2nd rounder was the asking price?

N8 !

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 6, 2010 8:47 PM CST reply actions

Yes.

We got Marshall Faulk for a 2nd and a 5th. A 2nd for Osi is out of line, especially since he was just a backup for you guys this year.

by andyrose on Jan 6, 2010 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

well..

he played like a backup…but wasn’t a backup till week 13.

N8 !

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 7, 2010 12:19 AM CST up reply actions

Then why would you expect a 2nd round pick?

He probably could bring a 5th round pick, but not much more than that.

by andyrose on Jan 7, 2010 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

reading the writeup above...

people still think he’s a Pro Bowl player…his reputation..which Osi himself takes too seriously…precedes him.

I wouldn’t expect a 2nd rounder…I was just seeing if it was out of the rules…

And 5th rounder…well, he may not even be worth that..that would probably get the phone hung up..unless we’re talking about adding a safety in there (yea..OJ..)

N8 !

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 7, 2010 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

How about a 3rd rounder

Thats about as high as I would go.

by CaliRamMan on Jan 7, 2010 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

Sounds good to me...

but I doubt the Giants would do it..

I think they’d at least want what they got for Shockey, which was a 2nd and 5th (tho considering the Rams draft position…a 3rd and 5th might be it).

…I don’t think the Rams are in a position..unless they trade out of the #1 spot, to be trading picks for a questionmark like Osi anyway…

N8 !

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 7, 2010 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Hate to rain on the Carriker party, but...

…IF he plays again, we’ll probably have to move him back to his college position as DE. He’s been a flop at DT.

by edpjr on Jan 6, 2010 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Not big and strong enough or quick enough

to be a tackle and not quick enough to be an end. I’m not sure what that leaves unless we switch to a 3-4 defense, which isn’t in the cards.

by andyrose on Jan 6, 2010 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree

He’s a natural DE in a 4-3 and has been playing out of position since he got here. He needs to move back to end, drop some weight, and he can earn a spot in the rotation.
He runs a 4.8 40, not the quickest on the field, but he’s moving his 300lb body.

by RamsFan1979 on Jan 7, 2010 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

He's a natural 3-4 DE

Nebraska ran a 3-4 while he was there.

by Carneros on Jan 7, 2010 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly!

He’s a 3-4 DE, and we don[’t use the 3-4. He is not a natural anything in a 4-3.

by andyrose on Jan 7, 2010 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

With this one particular spot, I've started to think that it might not matter as much

For a coach that thinks in unconventional terms for his D line — such as using 4 DE’s at the same time — this guy’s natural posiitoning might not matter as much. Spags has shown the ability to scheme “pieces in places” that other coaches wouldn’t even consider.

This is not an endorsement for Carricker, or where to play him, and I suppose it’s possible that he doesn’t bring enough talent to be truly effective at any posiiton or system.

I’m just saying if he is capable it playing on the line, Spags has the ability to find a way to utelize him.

by CoachConnors on Jan 7, 2010 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

You read my mind

Spags, has a diverse rotation for his D-line. Remeber Tuck used to be moved all over the place on that D-Line. So with this talk about Carricker, I propose you guys this….
As thin as we will prob be this off season at DE, what would you guys think about having the guy be a rotational D-linemen, moving from DE to DT and vice versa. Except 3rd down situations where we would need more of Pass Rusher in.

by CaliRamMan on Jan 7, 2010 4:17 PM CST up reply actions

his natural position

should be a backup! Hopefully provide some depth for us next year, maybe showing that he should be a starter! How is his contract structured?

by ramsrule on Jan 7, 2010 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

I'd be fine with giving him some time on the end

Why not? He obviously already knows quite a bit about how to play DE.
It’s not like going from D-line (hand on the ground) to Linebacker (standing up) like some of the outside rush specialists have to do. I would expect he could fill in there as needed.

by CoachConnors on Jan 12, 2010 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

I stand corrected

I have no idea what I was thinking…lol.

I still want to see him on the end, w/less weight he could be effective. Heck, lose weight and have him line up next to Suh & he might get good penetration. I’m sure Spags has an idea of what he wants to do.
