Rams roster math

The St. Louis Rams have made a surprising amount of roster moves in the last 24 hours, out of unfortunate necessity. Let's do the math.

WR Laurent Robinson to Injured Reserve. WR Nate Jones promoted from the practice squad to replace him.

LB David Vobora suspended for four games for violating the league's PED policy. LB Dominic Douglas promoted from the practice squad to replace Vobora.

DT Hollis Thomas is released. And...

So there's another move to be made to fill up the 53-man roster.

DT Marlon Favorite was signed to the practice squad. Occam's Razor says Favorite or DT Leger Douzable will get Thomas' spot. Of course, there are other potential outcomes as well. Stay tuned.

[Note by VanRam, 09/30/09 12:59 PM EDT ] And we have our answer. DT Leger Douzable was promoted to the 53-man roster. Douzable was signed by the Giants last season, getting actived in December...filling the spot vacated by none other than Plaxico Burress. I don't know much about Douzable, but given his size, 6'4" 305 lbs, and reputation as a pass rusher at University of Central Florida, it might indicate that the Rams are making moves at DT with the intent to get more pressure on opposing QBs, something they've taken lots of criticism for this season. More pressure, consistently, up front should also help a secondary with an ailing Ron Bartell that got burned on a couple of big plays last week.

Why was Thomas released? That is a huge surprise. We are already thin at DT. Seriously, what gave?

What did he do to stay?

Anyone can do nothing

Douzable

Hopefully this kid is a sleeper. I think we need this carousel at the waiver wire and bottom of the depth chart to continue until we have a good team again. It’s proof that the FO is actively trying to improve us. It may not be much but it’s about the best hope we have right now.

Keep an eye on the Vobora situation

Apparently, he called the NFLPA to ensure the supplement he was taking contained no banned substances. Once the test results came in, the NFLPA (not Vobora) appealed. In fact, the banned substance is not listed as an ingredient, so Vobora will likely sure the manufacturer. I doubt this will mean the suspension is lifted, but it’s an interesting precedent. Here’s a guy who does everything right, takes the mandated precautions and gets screwed by the manufacturer. What is interesting to me is this quote from the P-D’s article:

“We’re in the process of suing the company that manufactures this tainted product,” Lillibridge said. “It’s a product a lot of players use.”

Does the NFL now bear the responsibility to test every single player who took this supplement?

In my angry, raving, mind

Yes.

I understand the precedent set by the NFL and why, but if they aren’t going to police EVERY supplement and put all the good ones on the “list of officially sanctioned products”, why bother? This sets more of a precedent for players to send supplements to a toxicologist before taking them, and every once in a while afterwards.

I know Goodell has created a hard-nosed approach to discipline in his time as commish, but I don’t see why there’s not a standard set for if a player attempts to do everything right and still gets screwed. I mean, they could test him thoroughly throughout the rest of the season, and before every game, and then if it shows up a second time suspend him, couldn’t they?

THIS year's the year. I hope....

SUCKY for Vobora, but hopefully it clears him, at least from the perspective.

have a friend who

is a Giants fan… he says Douzable is an excellent lineman. We all know how stacked they are in that department so he could be a big time sleeper. We’ll see.

Sucks Voboroa could be getting screwed. But I agree, why take supplements to begin with? geesh.

Let me clarify

According to the NFL

this supplement wasn’t “questionable”.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

I know of some dinner rolls that had seeds on top, and the cop got busted for substance abuse from it. Saseme seeds will give you a positive!

by Knoxfan on Sep 30, 2009 1:23 PM CDT reply actions

It's not sesame seeds

It’s poppy seeds, but most tests from 2001 lifted the level of the opiate that poppy seeds had led to failed tests for. So no, unless Vobora had a dozen poppy seed bagels before testing, you can throw that one out the window.

catch me if you can

The Hollis Thomas signing was a mistake to begin with. He’s done, been done, and I think they only kept him after camp to give him more time to try to get his old broken ass into playing form. (I say that as someone who is an old broken ass, myself). It never happened, so moving on…

About the banned substances — from my many years in track and field, I am somewhat familiar with the drug and test game. The people who make and take the drugs (and supplements and masking agents) are one step ahead of the people that make the tests for said drugs. They create new ways of masking the banned substances and, for a while, it works.

Then the test makers figure out what to test for and how to find it, and they design new tests to find all the known substances and combinations thereof. Inevitably, guys are caught at the end fo the cycle, having taken a banned substance that they thought wouldn’t be found and unknowingly undergoing a new test that — surprise! — catches them.

Not saying thats what happened with Vorbora. Maybe he was stupid enough to put something in his body and just didn’t know what it was made of. You’d think a professional would be all on top of that, but who knows.

I do know for certain that some track and field athletes, as well as swimmers and gymnasts, play the test game as professionally as they play their sport.
