Sep. 26 prospect open thread

Conference play opens up, so not a ton of great matchups, but Miami - Va. Tech should be interesting.  Who are you watching today?

We need to improve the D-line

It was a tough decision I went the DE. We need everything there. But with Bulger still under contract we cant afford to pay two QB contracts. There may be someone worth looking at later in the draft (LeFevour). WR is something that can be had later in the draft as well, although you won’t get a Dez Bryant. So my real decision came between DE and DT. I went with DE mainly because Carlos Dunlap is a DE. But there is Nadueiuakcngdksf Suh at DT. We can’t really go wrong with any of these picks

Incognito needs to go, Shurmur needs to go, Avery's fumble-itis needs to go.

There are some great options

at DT for a 4-3 in the first two rounds. DE might end up being the thin position at the top of the draft.

If you want a DE to watch

check out the Michigan-Indiana game @ 11:00 CST on ESPN2. Michigan’s Brandon Graham is a solid DE prospect.

Would he go after the first round?

It's too early

Right now, I’d put him early 2nd to early 3rd, but there’s a lot of movement to be had.

I picked WR

Only because we’ve burnt so many picks with our D-Line… however Dunlap would be a really sweet addition. If there are no obvious potential HOF receivers in the draft, then go DE as much as I hate to say it. Even if Little gets better this year, his wheels are getting older.

It has to be!

Best available WR, then you either go. QB or DT/DE.

I’m a Bulger supporter. But it’s time to groom for the future. Also any QB couldn’t get it done without a good WR corp.

Check out the Illinois-OSU game

if it’s on ABC in your area (2:30 CST). Arrellious Benn should be back from injury for Illinois; they needed him badly in their first two games. He could go 1st round and he’d give us more power and strength than any WR on the roster (except Ruvell Martin).

Agreed, but what's our best trade leverage?

Because teams didn’t want to move up this last draft no matter what we did…

by LARamsFan29 on Sep 26, 2009 10:47 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Best trade leverage is 8th-15th picks in the 1st round.

We were too high and expensive last time; I hope other teams who wanted Sanchez are crying at night right now.

I didnt vote

I am convinced we need a QB, but we also need the DE and WR too (amongst other things as well). I just think its too early to tell because there is still A LOT of college ball to be played and who knows which underclassmen will declare.

Thats my wish-washy way of saying that for now, Iam undecided – but if forced I would go QB.

Fair enough

I was just trying to get a sense of the TSTers who are completely uncomfortable with a certain position so I could give them someone to watch today

No worries...

I think most TSTers are uncomfortable with at least a couple positions right now. Although my hope was to go the other way (Curry/OT) in the last draft – I did appreciate how the team was able to address two major needs in the draft this past year at OL and MLB – in addition to C in FA. I know that they havent performed all world as of yet but they addressed the needs.

I would like to see the same this offseason – address major needs in the draft and add depth where needed and fill another need (or two if we have more money this year) through FA.

Lauranitis

Is the best acquisition I’ve seen in our drafts in the last 5 years (maybe 10!) You might even be able to argue that he was the best player taken overall in this draft defensively… only time will tell.

If anything, hats off to Devaney/Spags for grabbing this kid when he fell to us.

Hmm...you can't leave OJ Atogwe/Steven Jackson out...

…is it me or was Mike Martz pretty good at drafting? That said, Laurinaitis has impressed. It isn’t so much that he’s 4th in the league in tackles, but the fact that he looks like he’s really taken charge of the defense. I hope he can be that Urlacher/Ray Lewis type for years to come, way to draft 1st-round quality in the 2nd Round. His decision to stay one more year at Ohio State was paramount in us being able to land him. It’s only two games, but I am impressed thus far. Does anyone else want to see him blitz more often though?

by LARamsFan29 on Sep 26, 2009 2:09 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Mike Martz was better, maybe not god.

Mike Martz was head coach from 2000-2005. In 2000, our first 2 picks were Trung Canidate (didn’t even last until 2003), Jacoby Shepperd (now playing arena), 2001 was better but we had 3 first rounders and a second rounder, so its hard to completely mess that up.( we god Pickett, Archuleta, and Damione Lewis, then Polley, then there was Kennedy. 2005 was his best one with, Bartell, Atogwe, Incognito, and Hedgecock all after the first round. Would have been better if Barron was good. So those guys and Jackson and Curtis are his best. But a lot of busts. He got better as he went along as his first 3 were pretty bad and his last two were pretty good.

Incognito needs to go, Shurmur needs to go, Avery's fumble-itis needs to go.

Yes I agree

gotta give them some love! But I have this feeling about Lauranitis… there’s something special about him…

Graham

was underwhelming today against an impressive Indiana team. On the flip side, Brandon LaFell put a solid game together against Miss. St.

Dez Bryant...

…in the horns would get me more excited than any of the QB prospects. The guy has burners. I can dream right?

by LARamsFan29 on Sep 26, 2009 3:37 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

And he's got

great moves in the return game, although I don’t know if you want your stud rookie WR at the flanker and returning kicks, but yes, you can dream.

by 3k on Sep 26, 2009 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

It'd be quite tempting though...

…he looks great in the return game. For his size, he really does have great speed, but more importantly fluid movement. It allows him to run routes well IMO. That’d be a pretty nice trio (since I’m assuming Avery and Robinson will get better by year’s end).

by LARamsFan29 on Sep 26, 2009 7:14 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

in addition to their improvement

having a true #1 receiver distracting defenses will help Avery and Robinson become better. But with no QB they may never get the chance to catch a ball. So thats why you get LeFevour second round (I have a man crush on LeFevour if you haven’t noticed.) That way you have a QB to throw to our newly improved receiving corps. Hopefully we can get a DT in free agency because this scenario isn’t helping them out much.

Incognito needs to go, Shurmur needs to go, Avery's fumble-itis needs to go.

O-Line could be an option but I don't think it is our biggest need

Football Outsiders shows which quarterbacks hold the ball the longest and shortest before getting sacked. Bulger has been sacked 4 times in an average time of 2.46 seconds which is the fourth fastest time. Although it is a small sample and I can remember one where he was sacked very quickly cuz Cogs missed his assignment and didn’t even touch the DT. So I’m on sure if those stats are very concrete.

Incognito needs to go, Shurmur needs to go, Avery's fumble-itis needs to go.

I watched Alabama and Arkansas today

Thoughts:
Julio Jones looks great, Larry Fizgerald-like.
Areanas, the d-back, impressed me too.
I liked Terrence Cody, DL, too.

Agreed on all, but

we’ll have to play our cards right to get one of those. Julio will either declare early for 2011 or try to win a national championship and come out for the 2012 draft. But I’ve dropped his name on you countless times – he’s been given an NFL body with NFL quickness and he continues to develop great football IQ.
Javier Arenas is a solid CB, but I don’t see how we’d end up in a situation where we could draft him. Same goes for Cody. He’s a mountain of a man. That being said, he fits better as a 3-4 NT than as a 4-3 DT. I’d rather have Suh or Gerald McCoy, from Oklahoma.

I still say Dunlap replacing Little

would be phenominal… he could learn from Leonard the veteran and be his replacement…

First off, love this subject

Some guys I think we could get:

QB: J.Snead, Bradford, etc. A whole lot of top end talent that could be gone after the first and that’s why i gave them my vote. If Null however turns into Flacco at some point my vote would change.

DE: Dunlap, Kindle, Worilds (the draft afterwards?). A little thin but what I propose would be a DT first.

DT: Gerald McCoy, N. Suh. If we grab a DT, keep Gibson or Ryan in the middle with the rookie, we could pop Carricker out with Long. I still like Carricker outside but I’m a big advocate for oversized DT’s like those Williams beasts in Minnesota.

WR: Dez Bryant, no one else worth a look. We either go big with Bryant or catch some sleepers.

If I was doing this in madden (as I often do) I’d see how Null does and if good: go WR, DT, etc. If bad: QB, DT, WR. If Burton, Robinson, Avery(slot) become good (in that starting order, it’s a stretch but Avery shouldn’t be a number 1 IMHO): DT, QB, LB

Brandon Marshall is a free agent next season

He’s only 25 and would complement Avery. But he has some off the field issues. Is it worth it? I think so. Then we get a good receiver without using a draft pick, and his value may go down after this season. I’d like to get him and Dunlap. Theres also several CB’s that would be nice along with some possible replacements for Barron. I’m not sure how much we’ll have to spend. But if all the contracts we got rid of this offseason don’t count against next years cap (does anyone know if they do?), we should have some room.

Incognito needs to go, Shurmur needs to go, Avery's fumble-itis needs to go.

by Carneros on Sep 27, 2009 12:27 AM CDT reply actions

No talent means...

You take the best player available. I don’t care what position, if he’s the best guy… take him. DT, DE, LB, CB, S, QB, RB, OL, WR… Whatever. Draft talent.
