This post is not meant to be negative, just realistic. As much as I love this team, I think we have some valid questions at this point.
FACT: We are a horrible team right now particularly on offense. I'm not worried about out D right now because at least we're playing "somewhat" resepctable, and the things we need improved (D-Line) can be corrected. HOWEVER offensively, it saddens and sickens me thinking how bad we are. We have absolutely nothing at WR other than a couple #2 (maybe?) and #3 on most teams.
The Results Of a Bad WR Corp: Our rushing game is less than stellar (not horrible, but with SJAX we should be top 5 easily). No passing game allows the other team to effectively stack the box which is what I saw all flippin' day against the skins... and tee-off on Bulger because they have no need to double anyone.
With all that said, let's DIVE IN to the questions that are piling up more and more, even after just 2 games into the season.
Question #1: Why aren't we calling audibles? All day I saw many times where we lined up, they stacked the box and we STILL handed off to SJAX for no gain, 1 yd gain or a loss. Surely we could at least call an audible and get a WR man to man somewhere! At the very least take a shot downfield and make them respect it, and stack the box less.
Question #2: Where is the speedster Avery on deep routes? I know we're west coast but c'mon now... we NEED to stretch the field to help the run and vice versa. It's evident the youngster won't be a YAC receiver... so, stretch the field (which is where he was strong last year). Bottom line, this could lead to an even deeper question... is Avery built for a west coast style offense?
Question #3: Where is all the blitzing? I saw a couple but they were pathetic and picked up nicely by the Skins. Let's be real. We couldn't provide a pass rush with a 4 man front against a college level team right now. OK maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but wow the Rams look waaaaaay out classed against some very average OL's thus far (skins are better than Seattle tho).
Question #4: Where is our D-Line... literally. We may as well rush 3 and at least get an extra LB in coverage over the middle, where we failed miserably the last 2 games. Chris Long and Leonard Little have to be the biggest disappointments thus far on defense. And the interior? Let's see... an undrafted free agent outplayed our first round draft pick of 3 years ago. We're in trouble here.
Question #5: What's up with the play calling overall? Horrible, predictable play calling IMHO has really contributed to these losses. There isn't too many people who are talking about this, but not only do our players need to grow, our coaching staff does too, make no mistake about it. We ran on 80-90% of first downs. If I can see it (chunky average guy in VT) then I know other teams see it particularly on game film.
We're in for some tough games ahead, and I really hope we can continue to stay somewhat competitive. But unless the questions above get answered, I really can't see anything better for the rest of the season.
Keep the faith Rams fans, it could be ALOT worse... hard to believe but true. Our owner's last name could be Davis (you can call me Al), and Linehan could still be in town smiling at press conferences. Sorry, couldn't think of anything much worse than that.
