Rams cut ties with Chris Draft

The rams have apparently released Chris Draft, per various reports around the league. According to Bernie, the gist of it was the rams asking Draft to take a 300k pay cut for the season. Draft apparently refused, which led to the release.

I'm torn on this, as I really liked Chris Draft as a 4th linebacker, and I really feel as though he did a great job in terms of PR by being present in the community all the time. Working with students, working for good causes. At the same time, however, 300k doesn't seem like an outrageous pay cut.

I guess what it boils down to though is someone will pay him full price to play for them. Thoughts?

(P.S. Not sure if this should be a fanshot or not, but feel free to change it if it's supposed to go there)

This seems strange

There are a lot of things here that just don’t add up yet:

Why wait so late in the pre-season to ask Draft to take a cut? And such a seemingly meaningless cut? Like you said 300k isn’t that big of a chunk of change for the NFL.

This kind of stinks of something to come. The dots just don’t quite connect. Is there another roster move on the horizon? Was Draft disfavored by the new coaching staff? Did Vobora earn a starting role with his play this pre-season? I dunno I just kind of get the sense that the other shoe will drop later today.

maybe

they had approached him about it before now.

$300K is close to the league minimum for what the team would pay a street free agent.

Are you guys for real

first of all its not the NFLs 300k to give or take , its the Rams and we are brokieman lol
second in a year that we have to let players like Hold and Pace go i sure as hell ant gona wory about Draft being let go ,i trust that our GM knows Drafts value better then all of us put together so lets just chill with all the speculations about the moves this team is making at this time, they have a plan and seam to know what there doing time will tell and that time starts now

Are you for real!!!

Take an English class bro! That was a painful post to read.
I don’t like this move. Draft was a true back-up that played all three LB spots proficiently. He knows the scheme, he plays all three spots, and he has the experience.
I’m not saying that he is a must have, game changer, but rather saying that you need these type of role players.
This move and the move to drop Curry, just don’t make sense.
We are thin at LB and WR, yet we drop two very servicable veterans. One of which was our leading receiver through preseason for what that’s worth.
All in all, I am trying to trust Devaney, but at this point I wonder if I am willing to overlook things just because the guy he replaced was that bad.

Stupid Move

you can ad this to my list of disapiontments so far with the rams. This makes no sense, he was our starter a month ago, we are to thin at LB to make this kind of move. This team is loosing to much leadership and experience.

It only makes sense

if they have something else lined up and needed the extra 300k under the cap. I was disappointed with the lack of impact from Draft during the preseason, so maybe he wasn’t going to play much anyway.

makes sense?

it will only makes sence if they make a big move, and it better be a big move because we have cut more money than we have spent. and as far as impact, his locker room and pr impact is going to be hard to replace

Money being saved for

a free agent WR or LB? Is there anyone out there still worth losing Draft? Not that I was a fan of his. Sorry to see the team lose a good guy. Hell, if he took the pay cut he could have been rewarded in later years with the team.

They will notice and they will giggle.

kind of sceptacle

I am a little leary of this move but I will wait to see what the reasoning behind it is. Everyone hates to see great guys leave, but another one bites the dust. We have Atogwe who shows great character, hopefully he can lead the way and show the young blood how to use their status for the good of our community.

300k is a lot of money.

It may not be much to the superstars of the league, but it’s not chump change, and IIRC it represented about 25% of his salary.

Leadership and experience?

This team lost 27 of their last 32 games. We don’t need that kind of mentoring. No loss here.

eh

he was a average player never impressed me nor did he ever disappoint me. To me he wasn’t playing that well and if pisa didn’t have shoulder problems (yet he played through them) always seemed to be making more plays then him and he was a little younger i believe. i think it had to happen after this season anyway it’d been nice though having someone who kinda knows what their doing.

On TV Draft almost made it sound

like they were already a little over the cap. I don’t think that’s the case, but that was his inference. I sure hope they come up with something worth doing early next week.

Draft wasn’t really playing that well this preseason. The young guys seemed to make more plays and bring more energy. It’s sad to see a good guy cut, but what you did in the past doesn’t make any tackles for you this year.
