Rams Defense up to old antics vs Falcons

I didn't get to see the game, but from reading the summaries, the final result seems awfully familiar. How many times last year did we see our "D" get demolished in the 1st and 2nd quarter, thus putting the game effectively out of reach? I have always been suspect of our D-Line. All of them; Little, Hall, Carriker, Long, et al.  I'm sure not all, or any, of them played Friday nite, so I don't know whose to blame. But whenever you can't stop the run and get off the field, it starts with problems up front. I saw Tye Hill's name mentioned a few times wrt getting burned - no surprise there. Laranaitus pulled in an INT - that's good. But, the bottom line seems to be that our first team couldn't begin to stop the Falcons first team. On offense, Bulger's generally bad enough, but it sounds like Boller had pretty good protection and squandered it.  Berlin throws our only TD, while Null tosses an INT. Nothing to be happy about there. Sounds like our running game pulled vacuum all night.  SJax gets three carries for 10 yards. Yessir, that type heavy workload should get him ready for the opener in Seattle. The rest of our RB's must've been in reverse gear all night. So whatta we end up with in this game? An offense that can't capitalize on turnovers or in the Redzone and our usual score of a couple FG's and maybe a TD. Plus a defense that couldn't stop the run with a bulldozer and a tank. Yeah, it's just pre-season, but I'm sorely disappointed with this effort. You all know Spags and the Rams WANTED to win the home opener in STL.  Yecch!

I agree with you on all but one point.

Null led two very nice drives. The first ended in a field goal when we couldn’t covert a 3rd and one on the five yard line. The second ended in the red zone when he had to throw a desperation pass in the face of a blitz and the receiver broke the pattern off. He looked very cool and comfortable.

The run defense wasn’t just the line. The linebackers were out of position at times and nobody, I mean nobody, could make a tackle. It looked like they thought they were playing flag football. I never saw so many weak efforts at tackling.

Why we insist on playing zone defense on passes just amazes me. What that translates to is our defenders standing there watching the receiver catch the ball three yards from them, then running over and trying to make the tackle. When we threw the ball, Atlanta had defenders near the receiver contesting him for the ball most of the time. Our guys might have done that three or four times all night.

It’s gonna be a long year again if Spags doesn’t get this straightened out.
