St. Louis Rams at New York Jets, Aug 14, 2009 6:00 PM CDT
St. Louis Rams @ New York Jets
Friday, August 14, 2009, Preseason, week 1
TV: NFL Network, St. Louis Fox KDVI
The Meadowlands, East Rutherford, NJ
It's finally here, Rams football. Okay, so we'll be tired of the preseason in two weeks, but for now this is damn exciting. Our little Turf Show Times community has gotten much bigger since we started this thing back in 2006. There's plenty to be excited about this year...finally. If you're new to the site, welcome. I hope you'll get involved in what's sure to be a lively discussion. If you're an old regular, welcome back. This should be a much more enjoyable season than the last two. The comments thread here updates live, no need to refresh the page. Just leave it open and it'll keep going.
Key injuries
Jets: C Nick Mangold, RT Damien Woody, LG Alan Faneca, NT Kris Jenkins, and CB Darrelle Revis
Rams: WR Donnie Avery, DT Adam Carriker (FB Mike Karney is questionable)
Here's a round up of the post we've had this week leading up the game.
- 3k breaks the game down here.
- ram_rod takes a look at some of the players with much to prove this week.
- Here's a look at where the Jets stand heading into tonight's game from John at Gang Green Nation, SBN's Jets site.
- Three questions series, #1: How well will the Rams play against the Jets elite group of linebackers?
- Three questions series #2: How will the Rams run defense play against the Jets?
- Three questions series #3: How will the Rams defensive backs fare against the Jets?
With that, let's play some football. Go Rams!!

I am PSYCHED!.....
…GO RAMS!!!! I’ve got my Bulger jersey on, some Nachos, a pizza, and some coke. It IS preseason for us Rams game watchers all the way over here in Los Angeles too. Gotta get the rust off and practice my dipping technique and pouring accuracy. :)
I can't wait for this!
Going to a sports bar with some buddies who happen to be fellow Rams fans out here in So Cal. Got my ED jersey on and I’m ready to go.
Aww,,,Bruin fan...
I actually go to USC, but I respect that we are united in our love for the Rams. Still, Fight On Trojans! (Though we’ll both enjoy watching Bartell pick off Sanchez)
Also, Dickerson=Greatness. Come to think of it, the Rams have been spoiled with really good backs over the last two decades.
Well, I don't
have a huge problem with Sanchez since he went to my high school.
But yes, the Rams have had incredible running backs over the years.

Wade had a nice stop but needs to wrap up. Hopefully that’ll come. That Jet blitz was tough for Jax to pick up, he got behind.

i saw it was Harris for the Jets
was it through the middle? Was it Jackson’s missed block? What about the middle of hte o-line?

Great start on D...
…not too good for the O. Bulger need to learn how to throw into the blitz (Kurt Warner style).
sack was from overload
They overloaded the right side with 4 rushers. Our G, RT and RB all picked up one guy and there ya go.

Its been a tough camp, right?
Please don’t tell me our guys are tired already. They’re playing mighty slow.

Wrap up guys
The long pass to TE was against soft zone ocverage and a good read by Clemens. We had no man covering him and he found it.
WRAPPING UP our tackles needs to be something they work on, that shoulda been a big sack and probably would’ve prevented points.

Dammit...
…Where is Smith? Almost all the pressure came from that right side….
Darby, Bulger
That sack came from 5 rushers, one of them was from Bulkler’s right and Darby barely chipped him to slow him down. Bulger wanted to step away from the collapsing middle but had no where to go. Solid DT play, weak RB play, Bulger needs to wake up
King just burned for a long Sanchez pass, should NOT have happened.

Poor, poor play by King
I know he’s brand new and on an island, but that is classic CB coverage duty.

Bah
TV announcer just said Sanchez read the blitz. He did no such thing. He stared down his reciever and got him the ball anyway

That drive
Clowny burns a rookie CB for 48 yards, just a bad play on King’s part that can’t happen at this level.
And a play that extends serveral yards because the first man on the scene doesn’t wrap up, which is a continuing theme for tonigt’s defense.
Probably should’ve been easy to Sanchez attempting a throw on his first down. Especially with this little pre-draft drama tha took place.

jeezuz
who let that sack come in?
at least Bulger’s looking better
Turf Show Times
by Ryan Van Bibber on Aug 14, 2009 6:55 PM CDT reply actions
He hung in
Bulger: nice long pass to Robinson, Jets still had some starters on the line in on that drive.
Most rookie RB’s, Darby included, struggle more in the pass protection part of the game and end up limiting their snaps because they don’t pick up blitzes very well. If we see Darby make progress there, he can be a real contributor. He struggled with it in the 1st Q.
This is not a bad game for the Rams, even though thy’re missing some key starters on the lines

was it the backfield missing blocks
on all three sacks?
Turf Show Times
by Ryan Van Bibber on Aug 14, 2009 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions
No
One was an overload
Another one was just good DT play (Darby didn’t seal his guy, but his guy also wasn’t the first guy to the QB. Bulger looked to step up and away from the DT and had nowhere to go)

the overload rush
Jackson had his choice of 2 guys. He mad one decision, then pulled out and made the other.

Hmm
could SJAX have made that run…………does he have the speed?
I have proof TackleBox IS Jim Haslett
on Smith
JSmith mashed his man to the ground on the play before last, then ran wide to continue to look for blocking opportunities (QB had rolled out).
On this TD play, Smith stood up his man solidly, held it, and then was pushed down to the ground on his ass. Didn’t matter, the play was well out by then

I hope we see Null + Ogbonnaya + JSmith
all at the same time

or do the Rams seem a little more agressive than usual. And this is just preseason.

Yes they do...
…and I like it. If we can get an INT that’d be great.
What Happened?
I thought we got that fumble

King is not playing very well
Just let someone else catch a pass, and if it wernt for help he woulda got away

Pete Carroll!!!!
If it weren’t for the BCS, we’d have won every title game in the last few years (except the Vince Young game). I like Gado a lot by the way….
and following the play after the ball leaves his area

I don't know about you guys...
…but I’m hating this Jets feed. I have to constantly look at the numbers of the players to identify them because they aren’t saying the Rams’ players names. Damn you NFL Network. You guys in STL are lucky! And dammit Quincy!

Maybe we shouldn’t be too suprised at this. I will be worried if the vets don’t have it dialed in by Week 1, but I think we had a lot of positives to see along with the glaring erorrs
