Steven Jackson was on ESPN's First Take; here's what he had to say. Talk about the difference a year makes...last year at this time we were wondering whether or not Jackson would have a contract in time for camp - he didn't. It's good to hear that SJ's been working hard on his physical condition and excited about the blocking he'll get with the Rams this year. I really think this is the year Jackson grows into a complete player, not just a top-notch running back.
What a difference a year makes.

SJ has the potential to be THE best back in the NFL.
Potential means nothing and personally I’m getting
of waiting.
Don’t get me wrong….I’m excited too.
Like the new O Line.
Glad to hear he’s conditioning himself. But let’s
face it, it’s all about “what have you done for me
lately”.And (in the last 2 years) with the exception of a few
nice highlight reels…..not much.

I disagree ZamRam
Over the last two years, Jackson has had to try to do more with less on the O-line and lousy QB play, and has actually done a pretty good job. If you want 1,000 yard seasons, SJ has done that in each of the last 4 years, even though he only played in 12 games in ‘07 and ’08. He’s also done it behind a sub par group of blockers. Brian Westbrook, who gets praised as one of the top backs in the league, has only done it twice in his entire career.
If you want long runs, Jackson can do that too. Brandon Jacobs is called a great big back, but the longest run of his career is 44 yards. Jackson has had a run of at least 48 yards in every year of his career. He’s also got 10 runs of 40+ yards, and several more of 30+. Again, done behind bad offensive lines. In ’07, he had 6 straight games of breaking off a long run.
He’s got a better yards per carry than Portis’ Washington years. I would submit that if you gave Jackson a line like the Cowboys of the early ‘90s or Denver of the late ’90s/early ’00s (like Portis had), he’d get the kind of praise that gets heaped on Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson. But there’s only so much a guy can do with blockers who can’t block, a passer who can’t pass, and a defense that constant had the team playing from behind.
I think if there’s any fair knock on Jackson, it would be that he hasn’t been as durable as a guy like Tomlinson, who’s had over 300 carries in 7 out of 8 seasons (and 292 last year).

one more little thing
I think of a complete back as someone who can do it all, like when Faulk would go in motion and end up lining up in the slot, run a Go pattern and end up with a 25 yard catch. Faulk was the most complete back I have ever seen and could turn a 1 foot hole in the O-line into a 5 yard gain on a regular basis. Jackson is a fine, fine running back but he doesn’t get my nod as a complete back until dude can go out for passes like that. I know, Faulk’s a HOFer and left big shoes to fill…still, that’s my definition of a complete back.
Lived in LA during the Rams and Raiders days. Now based in NorCal, I am still a die hard Rams fan and Raiders season ticket holder.

they've been working Jackson in
WR routes all spring, and he’s been carting around a whole bunch of new pages in his playbook.
it may not be Faulk-like, since there’s no Martz offense, but they fully expect SJ to be a top WR too.
