Rams Trade

The Rams aqcuired Wide Receiver Ronald Curry from the Detroit Lions in exchange for Defensive End Orien Harris

I have no idea about either of these players.  I'm too focused on the current Cardinals baseball drama.  But this was brought to my attention via text and I thought I'd share it.

If you know anything about either player, please share it.  If you know how this affects the Rams, share that as well.  I assume this helps us in the receiver department.

Orien Harris

is who we traded Brian Leonard for this offseason. He is a DE that came from the Bengals. Essentially you can think of this as a Brian Leonard trade for Ronald Curry. I don’t know a ton about Curry, but it would be very easy to look up. I’m sure VanRam or 3k will put up some of his stats when they post the news. I know that he is 30 and played for Oakland for quite sometime. He got picked up in Detroit this offseason and was going to compete for the slot reciever spot, but they got Dennis Northcutt which made him expendable. Here is the ESPN story and here is the story in the Post Dispatch.

I dont think it really helps much

I mean this guy is a marginal talent, who could have been signed as a FA last April after the raiders cut him.

Sure, the rams needed help at WR and he’ll fill a role, but does he make upgrade the rams from a 4 win team to a 5 win team? I don’t think so…

Its not a bad move, but it’s really not anything to get excited about either…

Leonard for Curry

I don’t think it helps much either but I do think of Curry as more than a marginal talent, at least he looked pretty good at times when I saw him play with the Raiders. Its late, but I think he will play if he can get the playbook. Its not liek we’re that deep at Wide.

I knew the Leonard trade as more about getting something for Leonard then being about acquiring Harris, since he was a 2nd and all, but I just got used to the idea that Harris was going to help fill in the D line and I’m not really happy with letting the D line thin out again

I'll tell you

that the last 3 or so years, living in Nor Cal, that the Raiders have expected big things from Curry. He didn’t always met those expectations…largely in part because of their poor O-line and QB play. But he is a good size body, not afraid of going down the middle, has great hands and runs pretty good routes. He was one of their more consistent offensive weapons, even though the stats wouldn’t show it. I can’t tell you how many times he would beat his man or seal his man off and the pass just not make it there.
Keep it in perspective though! He is not Larry Fitz and he is not a game changer. But I do like his experience and what he brings over an unproven Burton. I was getting sick of people constantly talking about Burton as a commodity even though he hasn’t been healthy to prove anything yet. He was and is all “potential.”
I think Curry will be a good addition in Shurmurs offense. Curry did a good job running slants and using his body to move the chains. More than anything he brings EXPERIENCE to a group that has little.

Exactly

I talked to a guy who has watched the Raiders pretty closely for years, and this was his reaction:

Take last season and throw it out the back of the airplane when it comes to judging Curry’s ability. The guy had three fairly decent seasons in Oakland before the disaster known as 2008. Between waiting for Russell to remember that they played for the same team, to frequently dropping the ball when it would finally came his way, nothing went right for Curry.

That both the Raiders and Lions passed on him is hardly a ringing endorsement, but Curry could actually work out for the Rams. The guy can bolt and he’s never had issues getting open. If teams focus all of their energies on Avery, Curry could become an inviting target for Bulger … that is, if Bulger can manage to stay upright behind that line. So, yeah, under the right circumstances, he could become a contributor.

Given that Curry has never experienced anything close to offensive consistency in Oakland, but has still put up decent numbers (except last season), I think he has a good chance to step in and contribute right away.

Agreed. And I’m not all that surprised that we picked up an experienced WR, but I am that we let a younger D-lineman go to do it.

I wasn't a big fan of Brian Leonard for Orien Harris....

but I think Brian Leonard for Ronald Curry is definitely more acceptable

I like the trade.

Okay.. So everyones worried about us thinning out the D Line. Well it wouldn’t take us much to sign some D line guys. Or just throw some rookies in there like we always tend to do. I’ve watched some footage of Ronald Curry and I was impressed with the athleticism he shows. He’s capable of more than Brian Leonard was. And Orien Harris. I’ve never even heard of the guy or remember watching him play. Curry is better off in St. Louis than in Detroit. Lets hope he suprises us all and becomes a great receiver. He brings the veteran experience for all of the rookies. Plus Avery doesn’t need much help. He’s got the speed.

There's a decent chance

someone will cut a DT better than Harris during the cutdowns in August and September. I’m not gonna be too worried unless they go into the season with just what they have now at DT.
