What's Your Opinion of Steven Jackson?
I saw this poll over at the Post-Dispatch website and the results (at the time of my vote) caught me off guard so I'm wanting to see what this group feels about him. Mainly, I'm wanting to prove to myself that there is a difference in the people who frequent this site as opposed to the P-D Boards and I think just looking at a lot of the comments, it's easy to see. But, nonetheless, I'm still curiuos what the results will be. Here's the poll.

Steven Jackson
Give him a chance. We finally have the personel for a decent offensive line. I say pound it and pound it with # 39, the guy is a beast. Now we actually have a fullback to block for him . Although I never have understood why we cut Hedgcock ? GO RAMS!

I wish you dumped him last year
I would have dumped him last year during his hold out and drafted D Mcffaden ,Jackson has never been in top shape since his been a Ram and thats why his always getting injured,we gave him way too much money and got shit back for a return, every Jackson fan thinks his the best back in football, well quite frankly i dont see that at all,he can never be in the same class as a Marshal Faulk

He had 1000 rushing yards last year with no line, fullback, or any other offense
to support him. And considering he only played about 10-12 games healthy, that is pretty impressive.

Best runningback in the league...
…Am I the only one here who thinks this? I mean, 1,000 yards on the ground is middle of the pack status, I know, but when you’re running behind OUR offensive line for the last 3 years, I’m surprised you haven’t had a career-ending injury yet. I know there’s a guy in Minnesota that makes my argument look somewhat silly (and I’m only counting him because that San Diego kid is obtaining the Marshall Faulk disease). BUT, AP to me is not a big threat out of the backfield catching the ball, AND he fumbles more. So am I just too blinded by my inner Ram to see, or do I have a point in saying that Steven Jackson is the best back in the game? He averaged more yards from scrimmage than anyone in the league last year, even if you count that one Arizona game he basically didn’t play into the average. That’s sick. Do the math if you don’t believe me.

Maybe I am old school...
But I don’t like a guy to beat his chest and declare that he is the best RB in the league, when he is playing for a 2-14 team… The great ones don’t have to declare they are great, everybody already knows they are the best. Did Walter Payton or Jerry Rice say I am the best ??? No they went out and proved it week in and week out.. Mr. Jackson doesn’t do that.. He is a guy who went out and said I am going to gain this and then sat his butt on the sidelined injured … Tripped over the yard marker I think with nobody in sight if I remember correct. He can’t ever NEVER carry Marshalls’ jock.. PERIOD… If you want to be best then shutup and do it on the field… Don’t worry that the fans are selling their tix becuz we have a sorry team, strap on the helmet and make them want to see you play… He is top 10 but top of the list hardly..

High praise from an apparent Dickerson fan
At least, I assume that’s the #29 your screen name refers to…

I love him, great player, but team leader??? Hell no.
You have to be on the field to be a team leader. Skipping minicamps and preseasons earns an automatic exemption for me in that category.
If that’s the way the P-D poll is worded, then they’re deliberately being divisive.

I kinda felt the same way.
For one, they never give me an option I feel represents me. It’s usually an all or nothing with them, but I’m not so sure about him not being a leader. He’s vocal. And I think his teammates are motivated by him. Does he say dumb things about the fans from time to time? Sure, but do you think the players don’t think the same thing? I’ll bet most if not almost all of them think the exact same thing. So, for him to say things in the press probably only endures him to them more. Since he’s got the guts to say something (even though it might be wrong) that they don’t.
And if you’re hurt you’re hurt. There’s no point in being out there if you’re hurt. Kurt Warner tired to lie his way on the field and he played horribly. There’s no point in it.

If the question were phrased differently...
“Is he ready to become a leader?” – maybe, we’ll see
“Can he be a leader?” – yes, if he starts now
“Is the team ready to follow him?” – I’d say probably yes, they’re ready to follow anyone who can lead them down the field, and who backs up words with deeds.
There are quotes in the Miklasz article from yesterday that make it appear that Jackson is just now starting to think of himself in a leadership role.
“I’m one of the veteran guys now,” Jackson said during the weekend minicamp. “I’m the guy that young guys come to lean on, come to for advice, where a couple years ago that wasn’t happening. I’m taking more of a role of being a leader, showing the examples of how to be a professional.”
But is he a leader now? Not yet.

i know i saw it latter on ,too much drinking lol
yea my mind gets stuk like that when im drinking too much, and by the way im refering to the man Jackson as a person that i dont like ,i know he is a good back strong big powerful fast has many good things about him in fact when we still had Marshal during his last year i realy thought that Jackson should be starting in place of Faulk , but as a person i realy dont like his personality at all, his got a big mouth and no class ,thats just my oppinion but he is a good player when his healthy

yep
BEAST of a back, just not the guy we need in the locker room. not yet anyway. we really dont have a guy like that anymore. i tell you what, you put jackson on team with a solid O-line, lights out. we could be that team. i know its early, but my family is brimming with the thought of an over 500 season. plus we live near DC and enjoyed seeing the rams take down the skins. SEPT 20 baby, get there! cant wait

Well
Well I like the guy. I just remember someone trying to arm tackle him and he ran through it and broke the defenders arm. That was pretty funny… and on a side note, his twitter says he is trying to gain more fat because the reason he got injured was because he was too lean and had too low of a body fat count. I’m fairly confident that he will be healthy and the Rams will have a good running game to base their offense on, which always lead to good things. Oh, and I didn’t like Al Saunder’s scheme for some reason.

Amazing
Last year was quietly amazing. With no O-line or any help from the passing game, he was still able to rush for 1000 yards. He was injured for a couple weeks and was playing injured a couple others. That shows how good he really is. I can’t wait to see what he can do with some help. I think that at times he has done too much dancing in the backfield but the numbers are still great. For a big guy he is quick and has amazing hands. I remember the one play last year where he was running almost a go route caught the ball for about 20 yards and then got leveled and got his helmet knocked off, but he still held on. He just popped write back up and got his face time in. I love the guy and am looking foward to next season.

This one's simple
Phenomenal talent, untapped leadership. Anyone who questions Steven Jackson’s ability to be a top (if not the top) RB in the NFL hasn’t watched him play the last 3 years. He’s too good at too many facets of the game. As for leadership, I think one area where the previous coaching staff failed was in their decision to try to mold Marc Bulger into the team’s offensive leader. He’s just not that kind of character. As for Jackson, I just don’t think he’s been given that chance. Torry Holt commanded so much respect inside that locker room, the need for an on-field leader fell to Bulger or Jackson, and the coaches pushed Bulger to lead; he failed. Give Steven the reins and let him run wild.

good point about Holt and Bulger.
Bulger never will be a vocal leader. It’s not in him. He’s a quiet leader and there is value in that.
And I agree with the Rams basically being Torry’s team up until this year. I think the players always liked Jackson, and now it’s his team. Time to step it up.

You've also got a serious problem if Linehan is trying to teach you how to lead
Linehan had so little credibility, and while the players latched on to Haslett by the end of the year, you can’t figure that Haslett and Bulger had much of a working relationship before week 5. So who exactly was trying to mold Bulger into this role? Newcomer/lame duck Al Saunders?
Besides, you can’t blame Bulger for turtling too much – who wants to be credited as the “leader” of a team that only wins two games?

Good point.
Personally, I don’t think Linehan was doing much “teaching” or “molding” or “leading”. I believe he pointed to Bulger and said “Quarterback = Leader” and prayed for the best.

I dont agree with you 3K
When the Rams were getting ready for the 1999-2000 season the vocal leader of the offence was Isak B
but that year we got Marshal in a deal with the Colts,we drafted Holt that year too, well guess what all three were vocal leaders of the team specialy Marshal , when you are a leader you lead, you dont wait to see if there is no one else so you can speak up,you ether have it or you dont and Jackson dose not have it

Well, I can't find the Poll on the P-D site anymore.
They probably saw ours here and knew they looked like fools.
When I voted (which was around 1pm Central Time) the poll broke down like this.
Love him ≈ 23%
Hate him ≈ 40%
Not sure ≈ 37%
I had a feeling things would turn out differently here.

I think it is time for Steven
to prove to everyone what type of player that he is. It sounds so cliché, but this year truly is Steven’s year. The pieces are all in place for him too:
He has the contract.
He has a decent line.
He has coaches that want to run the offense with him as the focal point.
The leaders when Steven was a rookie (Torry, Orlando, Ike, etc) are all gone, it is his time to step us as a team leader.
He’s healthy…?
With these in place, the only way I see him not putting up big numbers like he did in ’06 (2300+ yards from scrimmage) is injuries. This is his year to prove it. Prove that we can rely on him for a full year. Prove that he is the best back in the league like he says he is.
Like him or not, our team goes with Steven Jackson. When he is out, our chances of winning look slim. When he is struggling, we are. But, when Steven Is playing well, they have to start putting 8 in the box to stop him, so then Bulger has an easier time throwing the ball and Avery can get past the creeping up safeties. When he is playing well, our defense can stay off the field.
If he backs up his talk this year, you don’t have to like him, but, as Rams fans, we should give him the respect that he deserves.

Let's face it,
Jackson is one heck of a running back when he is healthy and things are going well. He does get hurt more than you would like in a lead RB, and he sometimes makes dumb decisions, but he still is an elite RB.
Having said that, I wish he would stop telling us how wonderful he is. Just close your mouth and show us on the field. Isaac Bruce didn’t tell us how good he was, and he should end up in the Hall of Fame. Take a lesson from Ike.
by andyrose on May 8, 2009 12:22 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That's setting the standard a bit high
Isaac Bruce was my first true Ram idol; I don’t think anyone on this team right now matches his production and professionalism. I hope I’m wrong.

Jackson's about as good as any RB.
He’s big, strong and fast. With some credible blocking and a half way decent backup, he should rack up a lot of yards running and catching this year. His problems started when he got injured. Of course, I’m not giving him a pass on the contract hold-out last year. That didn’t help the team spirit, and his missed training camp might’ve led to his being injury prone. If he had some of Marshall Faulk’s personal qualities, Jax would be virtually unstoppable. My guess is that Spags and co. will motivate him alot more than Linehan – Haslett.
by edpjr on May 8, 2009 5:13 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
U got me to thinking...
even with Haslett and his inane strategy and some of the absolute worst players in the league, when I think about it real hard, the Rams could’ve actually won some more games last year. Beating NE was a distinct possibility. The Dolphins game could’ve gone either way. We had both the 49ers and Hawks on the ropes in the 2nd games, but let ‘em come back in the last minute. And, the 31-27 loss in the finale to the Falcons was a competitive game. Cripes! If EVERYTHING had gone our way in ’08, we might’ve been 7-9 instead of 2-14.

Rams will have a very good year in 2009
This is a good sound team both sides of the ball,my only question is on Special teams not so much puntin or kicking, but the coverage side .In all other areas we are vastly improoved ,every one is so use to losing it will shock us how good the Rams will be this year.
All arguments aside, about the draft ,trades ,players cut, its all good ,this is a better start then i ever expected considering this is our first rebilding year,im very impressed with all the mooves our front office has made, real professinals in every respect, cant go rong when you have the people in charge doing there job at such a high level, thank God that dark glummy era of Zigmund and Linnehan has been washed clean and forgoten,be happy Rams fans the good days are back ,and its just the beggining
