Official TST nicknames: James Laurinaitis

We wrapped up the first installment of the TST nickname series last night, and for future references, I'll be calling Steven Jackson either Action Jackson or Sjax.  For visual representation, you can check out my initial effort.

So now we move on to one of the more tongue-twisting names on the team, Mr. Laurinaitis.  Again, if you have a better nickname, throw it in the comments.

Poll
What's a good nickname for rookie LB James Laurinaitis?
Animal, Jr. - His dad was a professional wrestler named 'Animal.' C'mon, work with me.
101 votes
The Disease - as in, " I caught a bad case of Laurinaitis and had to take antibioitics for a whole month."
56 votes
JL55 - The initial/jersey number combo. I think I'm required to include this as an option according to TST law.
23 votes
St. James - For he arteth full of talent.
48 votes
Crabgrass - because no matter what you do, he's all over the field.

I gotta say

I’m surprised at the early lack of love for Crabgrass. I thought that was a pretty inventive one.

I think it was kind of a forgone conclusion.

People have been calling him Animal Jr. for quite some time.

Let's not put the cart before the horse....

I love how we give guys nicknames and all, but let’s take our time with this one. He hasn’t even played a game yet and we are all set to dub him “_” (insert your nickname here). For all we know, he could be a bust. You guys can choose your name but for right now, I will call him what he is….“Rookie”

On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.

I don't think a nickname is something that only successful players deserve

It not like you have to work to “earn” a nickname…

Yeah Right....

Maybe you guys are homers and are oblivious to football. Only people who are good and make plays get nicknames. Adrian Peterson gets AP because he was a beast the last 2 years. T.O. wasn’t T.O. until he made plays in Dallas and Philly. Ocho Cinco didn’t get that name as a rookie, but when he made plays. Nicknames mean you are a household name. No rookie deserves a nickname until you earn it. And then you suggest “Rookie” get the very similar nickname that SJ39 has is stupid and disrespectful. What’s next, MB10? Give it a rest.

We have one superstar on the team and he is the only one that deserves a nickname. When you make plays, you get a nickname. James Laurinitus will be nicknamed “Rookie” until he makes plays. And until the team makes plays, the rest of the league will continue to call us by our deserving nickname…“Losers”

On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.

Really? Nicknames are that important?

How many bottom tier guys get nicknames? Hell, we even give a nickname to the last player in every draft – Mr. Irrelevant.
Laurinaitis had nicknames in college, as did Ben Roethlisberger and D’Brickashaw Ferguson. How about Jeff Samardzija who never even played a down of football?
I have to disagree with you, RM83. I don’t think anybody deserves a nickname. It’s not a trophy or a Pro Bowl invitation. It’s just a nickname. Like PacMan….

Think about it...

What is the purpose of a nickname? Let me help you out…to shorten someones name that will be referred to often. The keywords are REFERRED TO OFTEN. You have to make plays in this league to be REFERRED TO OFTEN (in a good way.) These players got nicknames…IN COLLEGE. That’s where they made plays. What is D’Brickashaw Fergusons nickname now? I’m waiting…. Worthlessberger got his nickname ‘Big Ben’ when he made plays on the field. If he’s riding the bench, do you think anybody would call him that? No. PacMan got his name in college, but it only stuck because he was making INT’s in Tennessee.

Name one sorry player that has a nickname and I will say you win this argument. I don’t care what sport it is. Hakeem the Dream Olajuwon got his name cause he made plays on the court. Wilt the Stilt Chamberlin got it because he was good. Even Gary Payton (remember him) was nicknamed ‘The Glove’ because he PLAYED GOOD DEFENSE. Big Papi got his name because he hits home runs and makes plays. A-Rod got his name because he is good.

Nobody that is underachieving or hasn’t played a game yet, gets a nickname. He can have his nickname from college, but it won’t carryover unless the performance carries over. As I said before, James Laurinaitis will be nicknamed “Rookie” until he does something.

On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.

A couple disagreements

“Mean” Joe Greene and Ed “Too Tall” Jones’ nicknames didn’t shorten their names at all, but they were applied in college and still resonate.
If you’re looking for sorry players with nicknames, just look to Chris Berman in the 1990’s. AJ “Touchy” Feeley? Temple" Bethel Johnson? Don’t forget my favorite: Eric “Sleeping with” Bieniemy.
Due to your hatred of nicknames of people who haven’t produced, I am going to give you a nickname: RamsMan83 “The Nickname Czar”

No Way....

You can’t give me the “Nickname Czar” nickname. I HAVEN’T DONE ANYTHING TO EARN IT YET! lol

And to add...

Mr. Irrelevant is a TITLE, not a nickname.

For those of you who don’t own a dictionary….A title is a descriptive or distinctive appellation, esp. one belonging to a person by right of rank, office, attainment, etc.: the title of Lord Mayor.

Ooh

Lord Mayor, that’d be a good nickname for Laurinaitis too.

And please

let’s not get into linguistic semantics. All that does is invite more English teachers to TST, and that would make james535 hide.

I just

voted for the JL55, easier to type than any other ones on the blog. Unless we abbreviate AJ for Animal, Jr.

Jimmy L.?

Old school

like Mean Joe Greene who got his nickname before even leaving college? Or William Perry? Or older like Earl Campbell? It’s a nickname people! We’re not making him MVP!

Interesting...

All the people you named were actually good in the NFL. Name a good college player that sucked it up in the NFL, but still kept their nickname. I’m waiting…..
