Braylon Edwards anyone??

Does anyone else think that the Rams Brass should at least entertain the thought of making a play to acquire Mr. Edwards??  Maybe the asking price is too high, but I don't really know.  I would really hope that we at least made a phone call to Cleveland to ask.

Everything I hear is that the Browns would still like to move him, and I think if the Rams would acquire Braylon Edwards that would immediately make us playoff contenders.  Any thoughts?

Does he play defensive tackle?

Braylon Edwards will not make the Rams a playoff contender. That’s just ridiculous.

He led the league in dropped passes last year. (Drop = having two hands on the ball, but not catching it)

He led the league in passes not caught last year. (Not caught = pass targeted to receiver but not caught.)

Out of 138 passes that were thrown his way, he caught 55. That’s 40%, or less than half as much as the league leaders.

Oh, and he made exactly one reception in a goal-to-go situation.

For a team that had as much trouble converting third downs and red zone opportunities, signing Braylon Edwards would be an unmitigated disaster.

Not exactly HOF stats.

“I think if the Rams would acquire Braylon Edwards that would immediately make us playoff contenders. Any thoughts?”

My first thought is you know his name but not his game.

Lived in LA during the Rams and Raiders days. Now based in NorCal, I am still a die hard Rams fan and Raiders season ticket holder.

Not Rediculous...

I wouldn’t say that the post is rediculous. Edwards was considered two years ago to be one of the ten best recievers in the league. Getting out of Cleveland I think would be great for him, and would probably help bring him back to Pro Bowl form. But, taiko is right. He is not a QB, DT, or DE, so he isnt worth a 1st round pick. If we can package a deal for what he played like this year, I think the Rams should take it. But that would be at best a 2nd rounder, with probably a return of a fourth or fifth rounder back for the Rams. 3rd rounder straight up would be about equivalent.

But Cleveland wants to sell Edwards on two years ago numbers and production, and that is why no one is buying.

Drop the price, and the Rams could give it a thought.

Braylon to the Rams

I had a couple of draft day scenarios involving B.E. and each made good sense for both us and Cleveland. Obviously, neither scenario panned out.

As for his pass-catching issues last year, I think it’s unfair to expose one season to criticism and then conclude he wouldn’t drastically help our passing game. A more accurate and fairer analysis would examine his entire career and focus also on the fantastic season he had in 2007 in which he was top 10 in seven receiving categories, including receiving yards, TD’s, (he was number 2, behind Moss), yards per reception and receiving yards per game.

Also, let’s assume that based on last year’s production, Donnie Avery is our number one receiver. The question we should then be asking is if Braylon is significantly better than any of the other guys currently on the team who are also vying for the number two receiver slot, guys such as Tim Carter, Laurent Robinson, Keenan Burton and Dane Looker. Given the choice, I’m taking Braylon.

We should also ask if B.E. is a better value than (a) the veterans that we could potentially sign to one year deals (Harrison, Toomer) (b) the felons (Jones, Burress) or © one of the old and/or very average guys still on the market (Toomer, Baskett, Lelie, Engram). Again, given the choice, I’m taking Braylon.

For me, if we could make the deal work, it’s a no-brainer. In B.E. we’d get a young (26) tall receiver (6’3’’), who’s big (211lb) and who has played in every game for the past three seasons. He is a better receiver than anyone we currently have and a better value than any receiver currently on the market including those two HUGE busts we just let go, Hall and Bennett.

NO if your getting ’08

Value is relative

Braylon is scheduled to make $4.55 mil in 2009. It’s also the last year of his contract.

Q: What do ego-driven players at marquee positions do in the last year of their contracts?

A: Hold out as long as possible until they get their extension.

Football players crave security, and young football players of his caliber are able to demand it and get it at the negotiating table. However, the Rams are not in a position to guarantee a giant chunk of payroll to a player sight unseen, and Edwards is doubtful to be a good-enough citizen to prove his worth to the Rams before negotiating that extension. And for him, playing for three teams in three years would essentially cement his status as a tier-2 receiver, a Joey Galloway type.

So you’re talking about trading away picks and stretching our cap to the limit to sign a guy who is a boom-or-bust talent, (and there’s no denying he was a rising star in 2007, to which I ask “what happened?”), a player whom other NFL players have lobbied against having in their locker room, a guy who craves long-term security and recognition as a team’s #1 receiver.

I’m not saying that it couldn’t work. I’m saying that there’s about a 0.5% chance that it would work.

More B.E, thoughts...

Again, I’m not saying stretch our cap to the limit or destroy our ability to improve through the draft. I’m saying if we can make a good deal, then make it because he’s better than any WR we have currently on the roster.

Ironically, I think you make all of the points for signing B.E. He’s a young player who craves security who is in a contract year. That type of player has nothing but incentive to play well and behave well.

As for sight unseen, I’m not sure what you mean, the guy has been in the NFL 4 years – on a bad team with sub-par quarterbacks. Over the past several years, even the Rams’ great WRs, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt saw their numbers drop. When you’re on a bad team, personal stats usually suffer. Certainly a change of pace could do B.E. well.

I watched Edwards when he played Cincy last year

He is an adequate player who can play the physical threat that Torry Holt did for the past 10 years. He can catch if the pass is good( Anderson didn’t fill that void last year). I think he could be a better Ram than a Brown.

by cincyboy on May 14, 2009 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

No thanks

Not after last season – in which his stats were mediocre.

07: 80 rec, 1289 yds, 16 TD
08: 55 rec, 873 yds, 3 TD

BIG drop in all three categories between the two years, especially TDs. Edwards had 13 fewer in 08 – and that would not be good to send over here.

Welcome to Baseball Heaven.

But...

Still had more:

Yards and catches than Avery (same number of TD’s)
Yards than Holt (same numbers of TD’s);

So if B.E was mediocre, what does that say about our passing game?

by victorian on May 15, 2009 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

If it only costs us a third round pick, why not do it?

He’s better than what we got right now starting opposite of Avery.

Maybe...

But Avery is faster from what i’ve seen and from what Cincyboy said

The QB situation was pathetic in Cleveland.
