The Story of how Marc Bulger Became the NFL's Most Underappreciated QB

As VanRam said in his Random Ramsdom article, it's very quiet out there...this is the lull in the NFL year that died-in-the-wool NFL fans dread.

It doesn't have to be this way though. If one searches every nock and cranny one can find little tid-bits of NFL news and if one is really lucky he can find Rams news. Well, maybe calling it news is a stretch so maybe I'll label it "information".

this morning I ran across this article about Marc Bulger.  I thought it was fairly interesting, besides, at this time of year who can be choosy.

I found the article at bleacherreport.com.

Bulger can play

He just didn’t have an O-line.

Bulger didn't have a credible Center - I'll concede that much.

But he still had Pace, Bell, Incognito, Barron, Setterstrom, etc. upfront, Holt at WR, and Jax in the backfield last year. The only changes we’ve made to the OL so far, besides acquiring Brown for Center, was dumping Pace and his salary for Jason Smith. So I’m not willing to give Bulger a free pass on the last two years’ disasters. He did his share to contribute. And yes, the defense was horrible. But our offense only scored 14.5 points per game last season and could never sustain a drive. So our defense stayed on the field. Recall too that when Bulger took over for Warner in 2003, we still had Pace, Bruce, and Holt in their prime and we also had Kevin Curtis, plus Marshall Faulk could still play. Even so, during his tenure Bulger has only taken the Rams to the playoffs twice with a record of 1-2. Nothing spectacular there. Like I’ve said before, I hope Marc Bulger plays this year like a combo of Kurt Warner and Brett Favre at age 30. However, Bulger has been shell-shocked for two years, had his shoulder and ribs hurt badly, and he’s about to hit 33. My guess is that Kyle Boller will be playing QB by mid-season.

It's an interesting article, but it ignores some obvious points

Bulger excelled while playing in the Martz system. Bulger also took a tremendous amount of hits while playing in the Martz system, which is what happened to Kurt Warner. When Warner was dumped in favor of Bulger (because he was physically too beat up to play effectively), you could have written this same article (“How Warner became the league’s most underappreciated QB”) about Kurt.

"Attaway to stomp 'em. Stomp the piss out of 'em. Stomp 'em when they're down. Kick 'em and stomp 'em. Attaway to go boys. Pound that old Budweiser into you and go get them tomorrow." -- Joe Schultz

added thoughts

The fact that Bulger continued to get sacks at such an astounding rate is partially blamed on his own inability to escape the rush, partially blamed on the deteriorating talent of the line in front of him, but mostly blamed on the incompetence of the Linehan offense.

Well then, consider this...

if you were the most sacked quarterback in the league for two years running wouldn’t you be shell-shocked?

To quote bleacherreport.com’s article on Marc Bulger:

Marc Bulger played in 27 games from 2007 to 2008 and was sacked 75 times. To put that into perspective, Tom Brady was sacked 73 times from 2005 to 2007 in a total of 48 games.

The Rams averaged 411 carries for 1,588 yards during those two seasons. To put that into perspective, the 2008 Cleveland Browns carried the ball 409 times for 1,605 yards.

Out of those 411 carries, the Rams averaged 6.5 rushing touchdowns per-season. To put that into perspective, the 2008 Detroit Lions carred the ball 352 times and scored 10 touchdowns.

In both 2007 and 2008, the Rams defense ranked 31st in the NFL in terms of points per game allowed.

So what we have in terms of support is an offensive line that allows the quarterback to get sacked at the drop of a dime, a running game that gains less yards on more carries than the 2008 Cleveland Browns, and a running game that scores 35-percent fewer touchdowns on more carries than the 2008 Detroit Lions.

Now, how many quarterbacks have played with that kind of support and done well?

Pace was on the IR half of 2006 and all of 2007. In 2008 he performed well but not outstanding like a 7-time Pro Bowler, just look back at the footage of some of the Rams games.

Couple this with the fact that they were playing musical chairs at Center since Andy McCollum left, all the other injuries the Rams O-line endured and the fact that our defense was so bad we always had to play “catch up” football, which usually means pass, pass, pass. After awhile you become so predictable the defense knows what your are going to do.

I think watching Bulger this season should really be interesting and I’m betting next season will be even better if he plays anywhere near as good as he has.

Go Rams!

We should know after the first four weeks

Our opponents in weeks 1-4 are pretty soft on QBs.

Week 1: Seattle
10th in pass rush (35 team sacks), but 29th in opposing passer rating (96.0)

Week 2: Washington
T-28th in pass rush (24 team sacks), but 7th in opposing passer rating (75.6)

Week 3: Green Bay
25th in pass rush (27 team sacks), but 4th in opposing passer rating (71.9)

Week 4: San Francisco
T-16th in pass rush (30 team sacks), and 17th in opposing passer rating (85.0)

None of these teams appears to be a significant physical threat to Bulger’s health, and if he has time (read: if the line gives him time) to make good decisions, he should be able to negotiate the better secondaries among this group. A good start could go a long, long way toward erasing the memories of last season, and giving Bulger a renewed pocket presence.

I disagree, the first 3 weeks will be brutal...

Seattle will be no pushover with the addition of Curry to OLB. I bet Curry has 2 sacks in the first game, IMO. Washington has an upgraded front 7 with Orakpo and the beastly Albert Haynesworth. Green Bay will also be a huge test with our former player Pickett in the middle, but they also picked up BJ Raji in the first round.

All this combined with 2 out of the first 3 on the road will not be easy. I expect the same Bulger to show up and play…

On this team, we are all united in a common goal: to keep my job.

I see those defensive upgrades, but I figure them to be more potent vs the run than the pass

Orakpo is the only new edge-rusher, and will be in only his second week of his pro career. He might be a beast down the road, but it’s rare for a pass-rusher to hit the league and dominate from week 1.

Go back and do the math.. he wasn’t the most sacked QB in the league… I think he was in the top 3 or 5 but not the most…

by Uncfan1 on May 15, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay, Uncfan1, you got me on a technicality, but you get my point...

I guess I should have said ‘one of the most sacked quarterbacks’. He got sacked a lot, a whole lot, over the course of couple of years. Wouldn’t you agree?

Oh, by the way, I’m curious, who were the other three quarterbacks?.

Go Rams!

One has to be David Carr

He’s played most of his career on his back

Your uncle molests collies.

"most of his career on his back"

Now that’s what I call a sticky situation….

Secret elixir, huh? Well, I'm usually more of a bourbon guy but when push comes to shove I don't know what the hell's in that either.

David Carr

Is actually a good QB but, has battled injuries and didn’t fit into Houston’s offense.

Someone else made the same claim a while ago, so I actually looked it all up and did the math myself and posted it but off the top of my head I can’t remember..

As far as Bulger goes he is an ok QB but just that ok… He was good in the Martz system but that was long ago.. He doesn’t have the same players around him and is older.. He won’t be the one to lead us to any promise land anytime soon.. If he couldn’t do it with Holt, Bruce, Jackson, and Faulk he won’t do it with these cast of characters.. I still say the Carolina playoff game told me all I needed to know about Bulger.. Martz always showed balls and in that game he had not confidence in Bulger…. Game lost and so was my confidence in him as well…

That Carolina playoff game was slow torture...

the Rams kept settling for FG’s early on, which always comes back to haunt. Then, in the last minute, and behind by 3 points and with the Carolina Defense completely exhausted and gasping for air, we couldn’t (or wouldn’t even try to) push the ball into the endzone for the winning TD. Later we lost it in two grueling OT’s when Steve Smith faked Jason Seehorn out of his jock strap. I was so mad I was smashing things. That was our last Super Bowl capable squad.

Agree, same old same old

He is who we thought he was, the Carolina playoff game was the snapshot of his career. I will give that he has had some highlights, but basically all his numbers are outside of the red zone, he can’t close the deal. I hope he makes me wrong this year but I don’t see it happening.

I agree with edpjr and TjRocker… they both nailed it….
