With the #22 pick in the TST mock draft, Minnesota selects...

Here's BigMac545 with the pick.

With the #22 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Alphonso Smith - CB - Wake Forest.

Minnesota is interesting because their biggest need is at QB. Obviously there is no QB on the board here worth taking. Josh Freeman is going to be a bust and the Vikings won't touch him with a 10 foot pole. The experts say that the Vikings biggest needs are at WR and OT. There are plenty of WRs left on the board but all of them come with huge question marks. Heyward-Bey would be the best WR left but he is a lot like former Vikings 1st round pick Troy Willimson in that he is fast but there are major questions about his catching ability and his route running. Eben Britton is a good possibility here and will warrant significant consideration, however I think the Vikings would be best servred by taking a play making CB with this pick. We all know about the Vikings rush defense (best in the league both of the last two years) but with pass defense is pathetic (as shown by the Eagles in the playoffs this year). Furthermore, The Vikings only created 12 INTS last year (tied with the Rams). For all of these reasons, I'm picking Alphonso for the Vikings because he has the best ball skills of any of the CBs in this years draft. Smith tied Dre Bly's ACC record for career INTs and lead the nation in INTs as a Junior. A kind of playmaker like this could really bring the Vikings defense up a notch into the ranks of the elite in the NFL. Plus, if the Vikings can create more TOs, especially with their ball control offense, they can be really deadly come the playoffs.

I'll admit, I did a double take when I saw this pick, but BigMac545 lays out the reasoning pretty well. This is a great value too, as Smith might be the best CB in the draft...one relatively devoid of talent at that position.

Hmmmm...

I don’t see the vikings passing on Percy Harvin, even with the failed drug test.

Sounds like...

you don’t want Smith to go in the first round John… almost like you have a bet or something on it…
