Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Rams second round pick in the SBN bloggers mock draft is...

In the SBN blogger's draft hosted by Mocking the Draft, I made the Rams second round pick this week. And who did this Rams fan pick in the second round?

Ron Brace - DT - Boston College

Why? After taking OT Jason Smith with the second overall pick (Curry went #1) I felt like the Rams needed to get the best defensive player available. That left me with three possibilities: Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson seemed like too big of a question mark (a la Vernon Gholston). I almost picked Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith, who could be a top notch CB. He was tough to pass up. That left DT Ron Brace who can be a building block for the defensive front. You can read my full rationale for the pick over at MTD.

Thoughts?

Agreed

Ron Brace is the best Defensive Line prospect in my book for us. Then , like you said Jason Smith. I like Max Unger or Duke Robinson for our #3. Ramses Barden should slip to #4 or we can’t afford him. Then I’d like Patrick Turner, louis Vasquez, and Rashon Harris. But I’m open to suggestions on #7.

He's a solid pick

I see him as a better fit for a 3-4, but for the Rams, he would definitely give us some chunkity chunk in the middle. He would take some pressure off of Carriker too, which would be nice.

Your all crazy?!

What a wast of a pick that would be!

I agree

That would be a wasted pick, Ron Brace is big, but thats all he is, hes severely overrated just because of his size. He was next to one of the better defenders in the draft BJ Raji and he still didnt shine.

Rams know

that we need talent and play makers on both sides of the ball i no it starts up front but i can’t see us taken brace. Are pics this year are crucial especially in the second were there is still good talented starters, yes i said starters. If brace was around in the 3rd or 4th round i could see that.

Yes

We really need a starter in the second round since it is basically a late first round pick. If the Steelers can get a starter out of the first round, we should be able to get one out of the second round, 3 picks later.

I would say it depends on how things shake out

there’s probably 2-3 people I would definitely want more than Brace who should be there in round 2; if they’re not, I’d be as comfortable with Brace as I would with any of my fall back picks.

Not Brace

The Rams have serious needs at offensive tackle, wide receiver and middle linebacker. Depending upon who they take in the first round, they need to try to add a solid player at one of the two other positions of need in the second round. Sure, we could use a great player at nose guard, but I don’t think Brace is that player.

This would have been a great topic to defend in this week's podcast

It looks like Van & I are the only ones who liked Brace in the 2nd.

A "building block for defensive line"?

That’s nuts….and if not nuts, then it’s just freaking sad. Our last two #1 picks were on the defensive line but it’s going to take a 3rd high pick to start the building blocks? What an incompetent organization if that’s true.

If Matthews is still there, either take him or the best LB available.

It definitely was incompetent

But we had a lot to rebuild. Eventually, we’ll have to fill the D-line. As for best LB, I would be a huge fan of that if the right names are there at MLB.

Need a MLB!

I don’t think you get 2nd rd value drafting Brace with the 3rd pick in the 2nd round. If you take Curry with 1st pick then take a RT with the 2nd pick. If you take either Monroe or Smith in the first then take a MLB with the 2nd. Wait until 3rd or 4th for depth at DT. Unless they plan on trying Greco at RT. If they try this then we really don’t need an OT until the 3rd round. That opens it up for Curry or Raji in the 1st and depending on which way they go in the first, a MLB, CB, DE, or WR in that order. We don’t need a QB until next year when there is somebody worth their salt.

This is more or less my thinking

Except I hold out a bit drafting for position depending on who is there.

Need a WR, MLB and DT

With all the 6 foot+ 300 lb+ O-Linemen we already have on the roster, we DON’T need to spend the 1st round pick on another one. We need some performance out of what we’ve already got. We need a Crabtree, Curry or Raji type (actually all three, but we only got one 1st round pick), i.e. an instant starter and impact player.

Let's get this all straight

round #1- Curry ( Best player in the draft? YES!)
round #2- Will Beatty (I live in Connecticut were Beatty is from, great guy, I think could be
one of THE BEST TACKELS IN THE DRAFT! And great character)
round #3- Best WR available

(Assuming these players are there at that time)
