Random Ramsdom, 3/6: Holt to Chicago?
Call it a preview of the off-season. With the Rams waiting to make headway with free agent S James Butler and the cramming for the draft next month, it's shaping up to be a fairly quiet weekend, compared to the rapid fire pace of last weekend. Some items of note this morning:
- The Rams had some interest in FB Heath Evans, but the former Patriot signed with the Saints yesterday. Seattle's Leonard Weaver is an intriguing possibility for a FB, but if the team just wants a blocker, might as well pick one up in the 6th or 7th round of the draft, where you can get a guy ready to open lanes and pay him less than $100K.
- Holt to Chicago? It's a possibility to keep an eye on. If that does happen, the Rams would get a chance to play their former mainstay, as we play the Bers in Chicago this season.
- Mizzou defensive players worked out for scouts this week, with S William Moore improving on a relatively uninspiring showing at the Combine last month.
- Nothing moving on the James Butler front yet. It's obvious he's not going back to the Giants, who signed CC Brown to round out their safeties this week.

The Holt-to-Chicago story plays up two interesting angles … one, that there was no mention of any trade, simply that the Bears expect to be able to sign him; and two, that Terrell Owens’ availability is a huge lift to Holt’s job prospects as “the anti-TO.”
Another long-time class act that should be receiving a similar boost is Marvin Harrison, except for those pesky gun charges and the stigma of old age. I’d be curious to see if there would be a place for him on this team, if and when we part ways with Holt. Isaac Bruce got 2 years, $6 mil from the 49ers at age 36, if Harrison would sign here for the same amount we would be doing well.

I still can't believe
we’re not going to get anything for Holt. That sucks.

Pay Holt the bonus
Especially since we heard the devastating news that we could have gotten a first round pick from the Titans last off season. I do like what VanRam suggested about paying Holt the 2 million bonus, then we can wait until somebody offers us a trade, sure we loose 2 mill, but with Holt freeing up (6, 8 mill?) we still gain (4, 6 mill?) and i think that would give us enough money for the draft, and signing Bartell. We have to look ahead, and think of this 2 mill a price to pay to build on our future team.

6 mill
if you pay him the bonus, they’d only free up $6 million by trading or cutting him.
of course, if you pay him the bonus the Rams have to trade him, given his stated unhappiness on the team, taking away some of the very little leverage the Rams have

If you pay him the bonus, you should just keep him.

We are getting something: cap space.
